Evening: ORIENTATION: After dinner we will have our Orientation. This will provide you with information about the inn, program itinerary, instructors, venues and on site staff. We will discuss how with cultural institutions including Tanglewood, Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Francine & Sterling Clark Art Institute and other regional theatres, the Berkshires have earned the privilege of calling themselves America's Premiere Cultural Resort. We will then ask participants introduce themselves to the group. This is also a good opportunity to ask questions.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Since opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the world's premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. With annual attendance of 120,000, it ranks among the most visited institutions in the United States dedicated to new art. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams, making MASS MoCA perhaps the most fertile site in the country for new art. The museum thrives on making and presenting work that is fresh, surprising, and challenging.

Afternoon: PRESENTATION: This afternoon's lecture is given by a Berkshire historian. Learn why the Berkshires are such a lovely and popular spot for visitors from all over.

Evening: PERFORMANCE: This evening, enjoy a recital by opera singer, Keith Kibler. Keith has made his national debut with the Opera Theater of St. Louis and the Boston symphony, Seiji Ozawa conducting. He has sung over thirty lead operatic roles internationally and is also an accomplished lieder singer. Trained in Vienna, London and Boston, Mr. Kibler received his doctorate and performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of music. He teaches a course on Music drama at Skidmore College and has taught courses on opera a Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He will be your instructor for the Tanglewood piece of the program.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: This morning we travel to the Clark Art Institute, the Berkshire's premier museum. In 1950 Sterling and Francine Clark chartered the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute as a home for their extensive art collection. Opened to public in 1955, the Institute has built upon this extraordinary group of works to become one of the most beloved and respected art museums in the world, known for its intimate galleries and stunning natural environment. One of the few institutions in the United States that combines a public art museum with a complement of research and academic programs, including a major art history library, the Clark is now a leading international center for research and discussion on the nature of art and art history. Building upon the founders' legacy, the Institute has recently unveiled its master plan for the twenty-first century, which fosters the Clark's commitment to providing space for its expanding research and museum programs while maintaining the unique character of its beautiful rural setting.

Evening: PERFORMANCE: This evening at Tanglewood we enjoy the BOSTON POPS The Boston Pops Orchestra - Michael Feinstein and Friends Tanglewood was named for American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne, on the advice of his publisher William Ticknor, rented a small cottage in the area in March 1850 from William Aspinwall Tappan. While at the cottage Hawthorne wrote Tanglewood Tales (1853), a re-writing of a number of Greek myths for boys and girls. In memory of the book, the owner renamed the cottage "Tanglewood", and the name was soon copied by a nearby summer estate owned by the Tappan family. Tanglewood concerts can be traced back to 1936, when the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) gave its first concerts in the Berkshires.
