Day Two: Monday, November 04 - Swem Library
Breakfast: Start the day with a generous buffet breakfast in our private dining area.

Morning: Class: "Civil, Church, Bible, and Cemetery Records", Though Virginia did not require vital records until the mid-nineteenth century, church records can be substituted if they survive. Search the state's best collection of church records, learn why Virginia does not have New England-style cemeteries, and identify where the best Bible collection in the state can be found. Class: "Census and Tax Records", Some colonial Virginia tax lists are as valuable as census data, even noting the names of individual slaves in selected years. Discover other census records that have been commercially created using tax and property records.

Lunch: A lighter mid-day fare will be served in our private dining area.

Afternoon: Field Trip to Swem Library for orientation, tour of genealogy collection, and research time.

Dinner: Dinner will again be at the hotel in our private dining area.

Evening: Class: "Probate and Court Records", Virginia's court system had its roots in English common law so colonial era courts had many similarities to the British legal system that preceded it, including cases related to probate matters. Delve into issues of primogeniture and dower rights, and find out why the eldest son and wife weren't always included in the will.
