Itinerary for Aug 11 — Aug 15, 2013

Type: Hotel

Description: The Natural Bridge Hotel was built in 1965 and is the fourth hotel to occupy the site since 1834. Its immediate predecessor was luxurious in the "Old South" style, and the present hotel offers food and lodging that retains much of that regional flavor, even though today it leans more toward the economical than to the elegant. Natural Bridge is more than just the hotel and famous Bridge: it is a tourist resort with a number of attractions and a mid-20th century vacation-by-auto feeling. Participants will have a pass for the length of the Road Scholar program to visit Natural Bridge, the Natural Bridge Gorge, the Native American village, Natural Bridge Caverns, the Toy Museum, "Butterflies at the Bridge," and the Wax Museum.

Afternoon: Welcome to Natural Bridge! Register for your room after 3:30 PM at the desk in the hotel lobby. Register for Road Scholar and get your program folder between 3-5:00 PM. Enjoy a Social Hour from 5-6 pm with fellow Participants. Cash bar and soft drinks available. Please be aware that there may be more than one group of participants in this program. The format for the program can accommodate up to 3 groups of participants. Each group will have its own group leader and its own schedule of classes. However, all of the groups will eat meals together, have the same afternoon free time, and enjoy evening entertainment together.

Dinner: Dinner in the hotel

Evening: Orientation in the classroom. Before radio, TV and the Internet, the Chautauqua movement was an educational, cultural and entertainment phenomenon. Chautauqua assemblies brought speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers and other notables to whole communities in a summer camp format across the U.S. during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Shakespeare was a favorite topic, music was as important as the lectures, and folks had a chance to mingle and socialize with each other. President Theodore Roosevelt once said that Chautauquas were "the most American thing in America."

Day Three: Tuesday, August 13 - Morning classes/Free afternoon/Evening music with...
Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel

Morning: Two classes with break - the first class from 9:00-10:15am and the second from 10:35-11:50am.

Lunch: Lunch in the hotel

Afternoon: Free afternoon. Please note: There will be one free afternoon in this program, either Tuesday or Wednesday -- which afternoon is determined by instructor availability/unavailability, and we won't know that day until a few weeks before the program begins. The two wonders of the New World that Europeans visited most in earlier eras were Natural Bridge and Niagara Falls. The Bridge has been designated a National Historic Landmark and a Virginia Historic Landmark, and it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was sacred to the Monacan Indians, surveyed by George Washington, and purchased by Thomas Jefferson, who wrote, "It is impossible for the emotions arising from the sublime to be felt beyond what they are here....The rapture of the spectator is really indescribable." You'll have a ticket to the many things to explore at Natural Bridge, including the Bridge itself, the Wax Museum and the Caverns. One of the favorites is the walk to the Bridge and beyond to the end of Cedar Creek Trail at Lace Falls. Examine flora, fauna and geology along the Trail, which is paved and meanders alongside the Lost River (which crosses over, under and sometimes disappears from, the Trail); investigate the Saltpeter Cave used during the Civil War; and visit an active re-creation of a Monacan Indian Village. You may also want to visit Lexington, about 15 miles from Natural Bridge. This historic town of approximately 7,000 is home to bookstores, shops, restaurants, 2 universities (Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute) and 4 museums: the George C. Marshall Museum, the Stonewall Jackson House, the VMI Civil War Museum, and the Lee Museum and crypt where Robert E Lee is buried. Stonewall Jackson is buried in the cemetery at Lexington.
