Arrive To: CHECK-IN: Available from 3:00pm. You will be greeted by the program facilitator and escorted to your room. You will also receive your welcome packet containing your name tag, updated schedule, and other important information we will review during the orientation session.

Afternoon: ORIENTATION: 5:15pm. The on-site Road Scholar program coordinator, facilitator and staff will greet you. We will discuss information about the location, your accommodations, meals, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures and emergency contacts, and answer any questions you may have. If you arrive late, pick up your packet in the lodge and ask staff to escort you to the meeting room.

Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times could change due to weather and other local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the lodge dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.

Evening: INTRODUCTIONS: Your program facilitator will go over the schedule for the week and you will learn more about your facilitator and your instructor. Participants will introduce themselves. The remainder of the evening is free for you to settle in and prepare for the week. The lodge includes a lounge area with a diverse library, games, dvds and videos, and a computer for Internet access; Wifi available. The French doors surround an enclosed Spanish style flagstone courtyard with a spectacular view of Sleeping Ute Mountain.

Morning: Introduction to the Ancestral Puebloan cultures: Lecture and discussion about the cultures whose remnants you will be handling all week, including how the local prehistoric inhabitants evolved their lifestyles through the centuries from Archaic, through Basketmaker, Pueblo, to modern times. Artifacts serve as examples demonstrating the details that can reveal clues to prehistoric lifestyles. Concurrently, you will learn about the process of archaeology and how it is used to understand what has occurred in the past. This will serve as a valuable background for the artifacts you will encounter the rest of the week.

Lunch: A buffet style homemade lunch is provided in the lodge dining room, featuring seasonally appropriate foods, beverages and dessert.

Afternoon: This afternoon focuses on curation at McElmo Canyon Research Institute. You will be inspecting artifacts and learning how curation is done as a prelude to working at the Anasazi Heritage Center on the Dolores Archaeological Project.

Evening: Flintknapping video: See how beautifully-crafted projectile points are extracted from stone by the same methods used by prehistoric peoples. Learn what can be understood about primitive cultures by analysis of their projectile points and flakes.

Orientation to Anasazi Heritage Center, headquarters of Canyons of the Ancients. Begin curation work.

Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.

Morning: Training and tour of the collections at the Anasazi Heritage Center, headquarters of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

Lunch: Your program facilitator will serve a hearty packed lunch at the Anasazi Heritage Center.

Afternoon: Work at Anasazi Heritage Center to upgrade the Dolores Archaeological Program Collections. The Dolores Archaeological Project spanned 25 years and was one of the largest cultural resource mitigation projects in American history. Reboxing, rebagging, labeling, and inventory of the estimated 1.5 million artifacts are needed. Curators at the Anasazi Heritage Center will supervise Road Scholar participants in accomplishing some of this work.

Evening: Native American Cultures of Today; Song and Dance: A Ute man and a Navajo woman share the stories of their cultures and their personal struggles of bridging the modern day Native American and Euro-American cultures. They discuss and demonstrate their traditional dance, dress and music. An unforgettable experience!

Morning: Tour Mesa Verde National Park- all day, with your archaeologist guide.

Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch at Mesa Verde, provided by your program facilitator.

Afternoon: Continue tour of Mesa Verde National Park.

Dinner: Enjoy the traditional Kelly Place cookout! Savor a relaxed meal cooked and served outdoors for you on the Kelly Place courtyard (weather permitting). Unburden your mind as you watch the southwestern sunset play against your final evening view of beautiful Sleeping Ute Mountain. Complimentary beer and wine.

Evening: Evaluations and wrap-up.
