 Description: Just 15 minutes from I-95, our Palm Key community nestles on a marsh island near the headwaters of the Broad River. Knowles Island (formerly Deloss) is a Lowcountry masterpiece. At 350 acres, Knowles is the largest island of the area's chain of salt marsh islands, or Keys. Historically part of Roseland Plantation, Knowles Island today is serene and natural: salt breezes waft through Spanish moss hanging from massive live oaks. Today, 750 acres of protected salt marsh flora and aquatic inhabitants surround us. We are, in fact, spoiled: over the course of the year, a visitor might encounter 250 species of birds in the area. Palm Key’s nature trails give visitors the opportunity to encounter all sorts of wildlife in the nearby woods.

Room amenities: Road Scholars share beautifully decorated 2, 3, 4, or 5-bedroom cottages, all with private baths. Wide porches invite scholars to relax with a book in the swing or chat with others over drinks. Inside, the open floor plans encourage conversation and visiting. Each air-conditioned cottage has a friendly, open living room and full-sized kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and coffee maker (bring your favorite coffee). Cottages have washers and dryers, so Scholars can pack light if they bring laundry soap! Large bedrooms have two comfortable queen-sized beds and private bath with plush towels. And if you blow dry your hair, you’ll want to bring a hair dryer. All cottages have ceiling fans, comfortable furniture, local art, and large windows.  Description: Palm Key, a quiet retreat in nature's paradise. The Getaway is located on the Broad River; cottages nestle under live oaks beside pond or marsh. Walk beneath magnificent ancient live oaks draped with Spanish moss, sit on the porch swing and feel the breezes playing over the swaying marsh grasses; see lovely sunrises and sunsets over the Broad River. Our site is a Nature Getaway: cottages and lodges have no TV’s or telephones to lure you away to the world you left behind. We hope instead that you'll enjoy the lovely peace of Palm Key’s quiet atmosphere by the pond and the marshes.

Room amenities: Bedrooms have two queen beds, private bath (no hair dryers), closets, chest or dresser, towels and washcloths. Cottages have shared living room, full kitchen, and dining area. Each cottage has a washer and dryer; guests are expected to bring their own soap. Cottages do NOT have hairdryers, internet access, or televisions. Cell service is spotty in our area; Verizon users generally have the best cell reception.

Facility amenities: You will likely be sharing a cottage or lodge with other Road Scholars; our participants enjoy having private bedrooms but a common living room and kitchen--these are nice spots to chat, play games, and get to know your fellow cottagers. Bring a musical instrument if you play one; you may find the opportunity to jam on the porch with others who do the same. Day Two: Monday, March 11 - Lowcountry BBQ History BBQ Chicken 
Note: Learn the amazing history of lowcountry BBQ.

Breakfast: Start the day out right with our Lowcountry Breakfast - Breakfast begins at 8AM

Morning: A Master BBQ Chef and certified BBQ Judge will do Classroom study of History and philosophy of Lowcountry BBQ. You will begin to prepare the Chickens for the pit!!

Lunch: Delicious Buffet Lunch at noon

Afternoon: Enjoy the expert instruction while slow smoking BBQ Chicken. which includes a really unique preparation method where BBQ chicken is the star!.

Dinner: Enjoy a leisurely dinner of YOUR BBQ chicken, served buffet style in Smax at 6 PM

Evening: Join us for a fun filled evening learning about the surrounding waterways by using chart maps with our own famous Jody!!! You will learn some interesting history about our local culture in the process.

Day Three: Tuesday, March 12 - A morning filled with the history, technique and application of Texas... 
A morning filled with the history, technique and application of Texas Beef Brisket done Low Country Style!! Later enjoy your "Fall off the Bone Ribs"

Note: Learn the cut of the brisket and prepare this huge chunk of beef for the pit. Later sample mouth watering beef brisket and "burnt ends" before an amazing BBQ Rib Dinner

Breakfast: Start the day out right with our Lowcountry Breakfast. Breakfast begins at 8AM

Morning: Learn the history, technique, and application of the Texas Beef Brisket done Low Country Style!! Learn the cut and prepare this huge chunk of beef for the pit.

Lunch: Break for lunch and a bit of free time. Lunch is served buffet style at noon

Afternoon: Hands on: preparing the ribs for the pit. You will learn about different types of rubs, how they are made and used.

Dinner: Your great ribs, our acclaimed sides and desserts beginning at 6PM

Evening: A local sweet grass basket maker will demonstrate the art of basket making. He will also share with you the history behind the art. He will bring an assortment of baskets for you to admire. Very unique in sizes and shapes.

Dinner: 6PM enjoy your hard work from the day! Pulled Pork and the BBQ Pit Beans, with other yummy sides!

Breakfast: Our famous Low Country breakfast buffet is served at 8AM

Morning: 9am. BBQ Gadgets "101". Learn the science of BBQ with the latest BBQ Gadgets. Pit Master Graduation and class photos.

Lunch: Our usual delicious low country buffett served at noon.

Afternoon: BBQ Gadgets "101". Learn the science of BBQ with the latest BBQ Gadgets .Free afternoon for sightseeing at nearby Savannah, Hilton Head or Beaufort.

Dinner: Final but very special Low Country Dinner!!

Evening: Our final evening with a special Farewell Party! Including a fire pit with singing, smores and sharing interesting stories about your week together! You are welcome to bring any musical talent and or instruments to join in the fun!!

Hunting Island State ParkHunting Island, one of South Carolina's most visited state parks, is a lovely place to spend some time walking on the beaches or cycling along the paved paths around the island. Many photographic opportunities. Check out the lighthouse, constantly in danger from erosion, erosion which is all-too-visible on the beaches, where the stark remains of fallen trees remind us of the ocean's power.

Penn CenterThe Penn Center, on St. Helena Island, was one of the first schools for freed slaves after the Civil War. Today it stands to "promote and preserve the history and the culture of the Sea Islands" and is an important center for African American cultural and historic preservation.
