At the end of the 16th century, Tsaritsa Maria Nagaya, the seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in exile here in the local kremlin before being sent to the monastery near Goritzy. It was here that Tsarevich Dmitry, son of the deceased Ivan the Terrible, met his "mysterious" death in 1591 and where the Church of St. Dmitry on the (Spilled) Blood stands today. Located inside the kremlin walls is the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry.
