Day at Purchase Knob, Appalachian Highlands Science Leaarning Center in Great Mountains National Park

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room served buffet style.

Morning: Leave for Purchase Knob, one of the scientific research stations in the National Park System. Orientation with Education Coordinator at Center, including an introduction to the Park and to the on-going research that records the effects of pollution on various plants and animals. Short hike over uneven terrain to collect samples. Return to the lab to analyze data.

Lunch: Picnic lunch at Purchase Knob enjoying the panoramic view of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at an elevation of above 5,000 feet.

Afternoon: Continue with research walking down to move through trees and over rocks near a stream recording the salamander population. Hike up-hill back to the research station's lab to continue recording data on the animals that show the effects of pollution.

Dinner: Dinner in hotel dining room buffet style.

Evening: Class: Learn about the history of the Park.

Day Three: Tuesday, May 21 - Afternoon and evening at Cataloochee, the area i...
Afternoon and evening at Cataloochee, the area in the Great Smoky Mountains Park where elk have been reintroduced.

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room served buffet style.

Morning: 8:30am class about the introduction of the elk in the GSMNP. 10:00-12:00pm A Folk History of the Cherokee and early settlers. Enjoy Lee Knight as he shares the music and stories of the Cherokee and early European Settlers. He will play musical instruments of the Cherokee - drum, flutes and rattle native dulcimer and banjo.

Lunch: Lunch in hotel dining room served buffet style.

Afternoon: Meet the Park Ranger in Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to learn about research in the lower elevations of the Park. Hike up-hill to collect, record and return snail specimens. Explore some of the remaining buildings from the early part of the 20th century before the area became part of the Park. View the elk, which have been reintroduced to the Park at Cataloochee.

Evening: View and photograph the elk as they come to the valley to graze at dusk.
