Museum of the Republic - Palace of Catete
The palace was the seat of the republican government between 1897 and 1960, when the capital was transferred to Brasilia. The neoclassical granite and marble palace was home to 18 presidents and witnessed many important decisions that changed the history of Brazil, such as joining the World War II Allied Forces and the suicide of President Vargas, who, along with Peron, were the most popular dictators of the 1940s in South America. Today, the palace houses a museum and cultural center, book shop, bar and open-air restaurant, set in beautiful gardens.
