Morning: Learn about the history of Aix-en-Provence in a lecture at the hotel. Field Trip: An introduction to the historical center and the history of Aix en Provence : the Saint Sauveur Cathedral, the Museum of Old Aix, the Archbishops' palace, Town Hall, Albertas Square and the Palace of Justice. Discover medieval streets and the city's architectural heritage ranging from the 5th to the 14th century

Afternoon: Field Trip:Discover the charming historic town of Aix in a guided walking visit. Lourmarin, Roussillon, Gordes & Abbey of Senanque - the Perched Villages of the Luberon

Morning: Field Trip: This morning we start at the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, a 12th century Romanesque cistercian monastery, still active today and famous for its breath-taking lavendar fields and production of honey, We carry on with a visit to the village of Gordes where you will follow narrow cobble-stoned streets threading their way past elegant town-houses built against the rock, clinging onto its hill flanks. Coach departs Gordes for Roussillon. We stop at Roussillon or the "Red Village" named after the rich pigments found in the nearby quarries. You will be charmed by this lazy little village evoked by Samuel Beckett in his play "Waiting for Godot."

Lunch: Lunch is on your own to explore local cuisine.

Afternoon: This afternoon you will explore Lourmarin, truly one of the most beautiful villages in France with its Renaissance castle, animated cafés and small boutiques. Lourmarin is now home to British writer Peter Mayle, famous for his book "A Year in Provence."

Afternoon: This afternoon gather with your fellow participants for a lecture on "The French: Loves and Contradictions." Understand the foundations of the French attachment to the art of living, what societal structures sustain their love of pleasure and yet make them one of the most openly rebellious people in the world. Visit of Granet museum, whose permanent collections make it one of the richest provencial museums of France. The museum houses 10 works of Aix-born painter Paul Cezanne including the Portrait of Zola and the "Baigneuse."

Dinner: For dinner enjoy a buffet of assorted gourmet French cheese and learn about them in a lecture on "The Prized Cheese of France." Enjoy an introduction to a few of the 350 to 400 distinct types of French cheese.

Day Six: Wednesday, September 25 - Marseille

Morning: Field trip: Discover the rich diversity of Marseille, designated Cultural Capital of Europe, the picture-postcard fishing village of Vallon des Auffes, the majestic seaside drive Corniche Kennedy and the city's Old Port founded in 600 BC by the Greeks. Visit the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde (walking up numerous stairs). This major landmark that dominates the city was built 800 years ago in a Romanesque-Byzantine style and features a monumental sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which has become the emblematic, protective figure of Marseille. Don't miss the hand-crafted wooden boats hanging in the chancel, offered as ex votos by fishermen for their safe return to shore, and take time to enjoy the exceptional panoramic view of Marseille.

Afternoon: Little walk: Take the short ferry boat to cross the old port and access the oldest district of Marseille, Le Panier. Continue exploring Marseille and venture through the winding, narrow streets of the city's oldest district "Le Panier." See Town Hall overlooking the Old Port, and climb the steps of the Montée des Accoules. Discover the austere splendor of the galleries, inner courtyard and chapel of La Vieille Charité and the antique vestiges in the Roman Docks museum.

Day Seven: Thursday, September 26 - Following Cezanne's footsteps
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Coach departs from American Center to Château Noir, le Tholonet, Beaurecueil and to the Château de Vauvenargues. Field Trip: Admire the landscapes that served as inspiration to Paul Cézanne, prodigal son of Aix and post impressionist painter considered the father of the modern art, Stand in awe of the Sainte Victoire mountain, subject of many of Cézanne's chefs d'oeuvres, get a glimpse of the Château Noir, and discover the rugged countryside and sharp light of Provence made famous by Cézanne's work.

Lunch: Lunch is on your own to explore local cuisine.

Afternoon: Continued Field Trip to the motifs of Cezanne : See The Terrain des Peintres and be inspired by a different take on Cézanne's cherished Sainte Victoire mountain. On our way, visit Cézanne's studio and stop at the Château de Vauvenargues, the short-time home and burial place of Picasso. Visit Cézanne's Studio that was built in 190.

Morning: Coach departs to Museum of Ancient Arles. Lecture/ Guided visit of the Arles Archeological Museum. Learn about Arles' past in a guided visit of the Museum. The museum displays evoke Arles at the peak of its importance, encompassing models of ancient monuments, objects from daily life in Roman times, and a variety of religious art ranging from the prehistoric period to the 6th century AD.

Afternoon: Travel to Les Baux-de-Provence, a medieval village set atop a rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south. Its names refers to its site — in Provençal, a baou is a rocky spur. The village gives its name to the aluminium ore Bauxite which was first discovered there in 1821. Learn about this picturesque town's history in a guided visit. Coach departs to Arles.

Day Eleven: Monday, September 30 - The Camargue / Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Coach departs to Camargue (heading towards Salins de Giraud). Field trip and Lecture : Discover the Camargue, the largest river delta in Europe made up of large lakes, natural salt flats, marshlands and lagoons. This natural reserve and regional park is home to Flamengos, Egrets, wild white horses and black bulls. Coach departs to Mas des Bernacles, Arles. Enjoy a personal welcome by one of the area's oldest ranching families at the Mas des Bernacles. Traditional practices come alive as you participate in the Festival of Flowers with Provencial cowboys on horseback. Discover the natural reserves, fighting bulls and agile white horses of this romantic wild marsh land.

Lunch: Lunch at the manade

Afternoon: Drive to Les Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer, the capital of the Camargue, for a guided visit. The town is named after three saints, Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe, whose boat landed nearby. The Roma (gypsies) gather yearly in the town for a religious festival in honor of Saint Sara. Dark-skinned Saint Sara is said to have been the servant of the three Marys. See the statue of Saint Sara in the crypt of the fortified medieval church.

Dinner: Dinner is on your own to explore local cuisine.

Day Twelve: Tuesday, October 01 - Avignon / Palace of the Popes
Arrive To: Hotel breakfast room

Morning: Travel to Avignon and enjoy the view on the Rhone river and the celebrated brige "pont d'Avignon." The bridge was formerly one of the entrances to this fortified city whose ramparts represent some of the finest examples of medieval fortifications in existence. Walk to Palace of the Popes, the official Papal residence of the 14th century - one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic structures in Europe,

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant

Afternoon: This afternoon you have free time to discover Avignon at your own pace. In the late afternoon board the coach to travel back to Arles. Packing & Luggage pick up for coach transfer

Dinner: Dinner is on your own to explore local cuisine.
