Depart From: Depart from the US on an overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal.

Day Two: Friday, September 27 - Arrival to Lisbon / Panoramic Orientation Drive
Morning: You will meet your fellow participants at Lisbon Airport, and your Group Leader or an Road Scholar representative will assist you in transfering to your Hotel in downtown Lisbon.

Lunch: Lunch at the Hotel Restaurant, followed by check-in to your room.

Afternoon: This afternoon a guided orientation drive around the center of Lisbon will introduce some of the most important sights of the City including the Tower of Belem, Monument to the Discoveries, the Monastery of Jeronimos, and the Alfama district ending with a guided walk from "Bairro Alto" through "Chiado and "Baixa".

Dinner: Your Group leader will an orientation and information meeting at the hotel to introduce you to your fellow travelers before dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Morning: This morning enjoy a lecture at the hotel: Portuguese Art & Architecture: "Gothic Manueline" style, the "Baroque" in Portugal, and Masters of Portuguese painting and fine arts. After the lecture, walk to the Gulbenkian Foundation Museum for an expert-led exploration of its collection.

Lunch: Lunch at Gulbenkian Foundation self-service cafeteria.

Afternoon: This afternoon enjoy an expert-led discovery of the centuries old decorative art of ceramic tiles at the Portuguese National Tile Museum housed at the former "Madre de Deus" Convent.

Day Four: Sunday, September 29 - Lecture at the Hotel / Alcobaca Monastery and For...
Lecture at the Hotel / Alcobaca Monastery and Fortress Village of Obidos / Fado Music and Songs

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: This morning enjoy a lecture at the hotel: Eight hundred years of Christian Reconquest of Iberia; Muslim Cultural Influences in Portugal; Re-establishment of the Christian Kingdoms and the recognition of Portugal; Prince Henry the Navigator and his contribution to Portuguese colonial expansion.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant en route to the Alcobaca Monastery.

Afternoon: This afternoon we venture into the countryside and drive to Alcobaca to visit the Monastery founded by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, in 1153, and that maintained a close association with the Kings of Portugal throughout its history. We continue to the walled Fortress village of Obidos. Freed from the Moors in 1148, it was presented by King D. Diniz to his young wife D. Isabel.

Dinner: Hotel dining room.

Evening: This evening enjoy an exclusive private performance of Fado instruments, music and songs and learn about this traditional Portuguese Folk music.

Day Five: Monday, September 30 - National Palace of Sintra & "Cabo da Roca"
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: This morning enjoy a lecture at the hotel: Modern and Contemporary Portugal – Urban development, culture and the political system; Iberia – Relations between Portugal and Spain from the 18th century to date. After the lecture we drive to the former village of Sintra, today a part of "greater Lisbon" that still preserves village atmosphere and flavors. Enjoy an expert-led discovery of the National Palace of Sintra towering at the center of the former Village.

Lunch: Lunch at a local Restaurant in Sintra Village.

Afternoon: Enjoy some free time to explore the Village of Sintra before returning to Lisbon. Enroute we stop at "Cabo da Roca" and its lighthouse marking the most western point of Europe overlooking the Atlantic ocean.

Dinner: This evening enjoy some free time to explore the local restaurants of Lisbon on your own.

Day Six: Tuesday, October 01 - Discover Evora and Merida, the Roman town "Emerit...
Breakfast: Early buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: Leaving Lisbon behind, we transfer to Merida. On the way we will stop in Evora, a well preserved walled medieval city where a local expert will take you on a guided walk introducing this charming former Royal town, very important during the Monarchy.

Lunch: Early lunch at a local restaurant en route to Spain

Afternoon: Continuing to Merida, you are now in Spain. A local expert will take you on an exploration inside the well preserved Roman remains dating from 24 B.C. including the Amphitheater, the Theater, and a former Roman Temple amongst other impressive landmarks. Afterwards enjoy some free time to explore the National Museum of Roman Art and some of the most important items of its collection of over 40.000 Roman pieces and articrafts found in the area. The museum is housed in an impressive building designed by Rafael Moneo Valles, the well known Spanish Architect. We arrive at the Hotel in the late afternoon for check-in and a well deserved rest; perhaps enjoy its comfortable modern day spa.

Afternoon: After lunch your local expert will take you on a walking exploration of the Cathedral, the sacristy of Santo Tome, and the Musem El Greco. We will end with a visit to one of the two former Synagogues of "El Transito" or Santa Maria La Blanca, now museums, before arriving and checking in at the Hotel.

Morning: This morning attend a lecture about Catalonian Identity at the Museum of History of Catalonia.

Lunch: Lunch at the Museum Cafeteria with views over Barcelona.

Afternoon: This afternoon an excursion will take you on an orientation drive around Barcelona before an expert-led discovery of "Barrio Gotico" will introduce you to some of the Medieval buildings and former Palaces of this historical area of Barcelona.

Day Fifteen: Thursday, October 10 - City of Tarragona / Catalan Folk Music and Dances
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room.

Morning: Depart for an expert-led lecture / discovery of Tarragona, an ancient city with many well-preserved Roman remains . Also enjoy a drive along the coast line of Catalonia.

Lunch: Lunch en route before returning to Barcelona.

Afternoon: For the remainder of the afternoon you are free to explore Barcelona and its Museums, galleries and shops on your own.

Dinner: Hotel dining room.

Evening: After dinner we make it a late night out and transfer to a local community centre to join the rehearsal of "Esbart San Marti" for a private presentation of a dress-rehearsal featuring traditional Catalunya folk song and dances, and a chance to meet the participants afterwards for a drink at the "canteen"
