Gold Rush history, field trip to Empire Mine, Victorian Christmas celebration

Note: Field trip requires walking and standing during docent presentation, Victorian Christmas requires walking through the town

Breakfast: Full buffet breakfast in hotel dining room.

Morning: A local historian lectures on the Gold Rush history of Nevada City. It was first settled in 1849, during the California Gold Rush, under the name Nevada (meaning "snow-covered", a reference to the snow-topped mountains in the area). In 1850-51, it was the most important mining town in the state, Nevada County being the leading gold-mining county in the state. On a guided visit to the famous Empire Mine we learn more about the California gold strike. The Empire Mine is the site of the oldest, largest, and richest gold mine in California. From 1850 to its closing in 1956, it produced 5.8 million ounces of gold. This 5.8 million ounces of gold would fill a box 7 feet on each side. It is estimated that this represented only 20% of the available gold...80% remains.

Lunch: We are served a special "Miner's Lunch" at the Empire Mine. After lunch we continue our field trip with a guided visit to the Grass Valley Museum which depicts the rich history of the Gold Rush days to 1930 with displays of furniture, art, objects d’art, clothing, musical instruments and artifacts of the Victorian era. The Museum also features a Victorian bedroom, a lace making exhibit, Lola Montez’s bathtub, and a hall of photographs from the turn of the century.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Free time to enjoy the Victorian Christmas celebration. The enticing aromas of roasted chestnuts and hearty holiday foods fill the air, along with cries of street vendors hawking their wares and lamp-lit streets filled to overflowing with authentic Christmas treasures.
