Morning: Take in a traditional Barong and Keris dance performance in the village of Batubulan. This dance describes the eternal struggle between good (represented by the Barong Keket - a half shaggy dog, half lion) and evil (represented by the Rangda or witch) and ends with scene where the kris (a wavy-bladed, traditional dagger) dancers fall into a trance alternatingly trying to kill themselves and the Rangda. Afterwards witness age old wood carving techniques at Mas village.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Kintamani while taking in breathtaking views of the nearby lake, Danau Batur, which is formed from a caldera (a volcanic crater).

Afternoon: Explore the pilgrimage site of Gunung Kawi, which is one of Bali's oldest and largest monuments. It consists of 10 rock-cut candi (shrines) that are cut out of the rock face and measure at an impressive 26 feet tall!

Dinner: Barbeque dinner in Budaya Theater at the hotel.

Morning: Unearth history at the elaborate Taman Ayun Temple, which was built in 1634 and served as the main temple for the Mengwi Kingdom. It has three ascending levels of spacious courtyards containing rows of shrines and is surrounded by a wide, elegant moat. Afterwards, quench your thirst with fresh coconut juice at the picturesque Tanah Lot Temple. This temple is one of the holiest in Bali, built upon a huge rock, waves crash at its feet as it is surrounded by the sea.

Morning: For more than 1,000 years the fantastic temple complex of Borobudur lay hidden under jungle and volcanic ash. This UNESCO World Heritage monument is about two hours away through the lush Javanese landscape, and it is amazing. Encounter its great succession of stone terraces carved with images of the Buddha and see why historian Arnold Toynbee equaled it to the Parthenon. Archaeologists believe the site was completed around 825AD under Central Java's Buddhist Syailendra Dynasty, then abandoned by later Hindu rulers. In 1814, Sir Stamford Raffles sent an engineer to investigate rumors of a mountain of Buddhas. Beneath jungle vines the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world emerged. With UNESCO assisting in the restoration, the site was finally opened in 1983. Borobudur glorifies the Ultimate Reality, the serene realm of the Lord Buddha. Steps lead up to progressively more enlightened states of being, from carnal desires on the lowest levels to pure abstraction on the highest. To create this vast stone complex measuring two million cubic feet, it took an estimated 75 years and a human army of about 50,000. Mystical, rising out of the jungle, transcending time, Borobudur is a travel experience not to be missed.

Morning: Depart with your Road Scholar group for Cai Be, deep in the heart of the Mekong Delta. En route stop at the Cao Dai, a temple of the Cao Dai religion which is a fusion of Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, native Vietnamese Spiritualism, Christianity, and Islam. Continue to Cai Be and embark on a private boat to cruise the colorful Cai Be floating market and try bargaining and exchanging goods with local traders. Later, row through the beautiful channels of Tan Phong island on smaller boats and try your hand at net-fishing.

Afternoon: Continue by boat to visit a handicraft village. Awaken your inner chef during a presentation on traditional methods for making fish sauce, rice-nets for spring rolls, and cooking salt. Learn the method for sewing coconut leaves together for traditional cottages.

Morning: Long considered one of the loveliest cities in Indochina, Cambodia's capital is imbued with the feel of Old Asia. It's a lengthy trip, but well worth it to see Phnom Penh's Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and unrivaled cache of Khmer cultural treasures. A morning drive through the countryside takes you past water buffalo, rice paddies and stilt houses to this port at the confluence of the Mekong River and two tributaries. The hellish days of the Khmer Rouge are gone, leaving a city determined to thrive. Vestiges of French colonial times can still be seen in the tree-lined boulevards. Visit the magnificent National Museum to view the world's finest collection of Khmer artifacts and sculptures from Angkor, including the statue of the Leper King. After lunch, discover the majestic Royal Palace, with its Throne Hall where kings and queens once paraded on elephants or in gilded sedans. Visit the Silver Pagoda floored in over 5,000 silver tiles, each weighing over two pounds. This temple is famous for its life sized Buddha in solid gold encrusted with thousands of diamonds.

Afternoon: A visit to Jim Thompson's House is a must when in Bangkok. This beautiful, riverside, teak mansion was the former residence of Jim Thompson, the charismatic American silk millionaire who spent years filling it with priceless antiques before his mysterious disappearance in 1967. Situated near the museum is Baan Krua, a cham Muslim village whose artisans used to weave for Jim Thompson. Today, some of the original weaving families still remain and welcome visitors to learn about their history and silk traditions. This community houses a silk shop and gallery, which showcases high quality Thai silk products.

Morning: It is just an hour drive south of Bangkok to Samut Songkhram province. First we stop at an amazing country market along the railway tracks, then we will see Tha Kha, one of the many floating markets in the area. We will take a fascinating paddleboat journey through the klongs and stop to enjoy a glass of coconut sugar syrup with a friendly local family. Afterwards, we will take a boat ride through the maze of canals, stopping along the way to explore Buddhist temples before finally arriving at Rama II Park with its Thai style Pavilion Museum.

Morning: An early start will take you to Wat Pho in time to experience the monks early morning chanting ritual. After this uplifting and often private experience visit the temple grounds and the famous 146 foot reclining Buddha. Continue to the Grand Palace and marvel at the mysterious Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha image in Thailand.

Afternoon: Transfer to the airport for an evening flight to Siem Reap. Transfer to hotel upon arrival.

Morning: Visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom. This city was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman II. This city is surrounded by a 26 foot high wall, with each side of the city being 2.5 miles long, forming a perfect square. Enter the city through the ancient South Gate. Continue to the exact center of the city to find the Bayon Temple. This temple is unique because of the 54 towers with four faces representing the 54 provinces of the then Great Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and The Terrace of the Leper King are also a must, as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs. Afterwards, partake in a very special ceremony in which Buddhist monks will perform a private blessing ceremony for you, wishing you health and safety during your journey.

Afternoon: Field trip to the Angkor National Museum, which showcases artifacts from the Golden Era of the Khmer Empire. Visit the legendary Angkor Wat. Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolizing Mount Meru, the home of the gods. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carving and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the ways Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Angkor Wat is well known for the more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. Construction is thought to have taken around 30 years of intensive labor. Today, Angkor Wat is featured on the Cambodian national flag as it symbolizes the soul of the Khmer people. You will be there during sunset, when Angkor Wat is less crowded and the Apsaras (female spirits) will shine in the most beautiful light.

Morning: Travel to the gem of the Angkor area, the beautiful temple of Banteay Srey, which is best viewed in the warm morning light. The so-called "Citadel of the Women" was built between the 11th and 13th century and remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art and this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs depicting the Hindu god Shiva. Banteay Srey is unique because of the pink sandstone used in its construction and which is not seen anywhere else in Angkor. On the way back to Siem Reap, stop at the Landmine Museum where the museum's founder, Mr. Aki Ra, was a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge regime and is working today as a de-miner. The museum also serves as a rescue center for a number of landmine amputee children that Aki Ra has brought off Phnom Penh's streets or from impoverished rural communities.

Afternoon: Explore the Ta Prohm temple which is unique because it has been largely left as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. Afterwards, visit Artisans d'Angkor, an organization that supports Cambodian arts and crafts, and helps young people find work in their local villages by continuing the practice of traditional arts. Learn about Cambodian wood and stone carving, wood and stone lacquering, gilding, and silk processing.

Morning: Embark on a fascinating boat ride on the Tonlé Sap Lake, where you will learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia's largest freshwater lake and its size varies greatly between seasons, sometimes swelling up to four times its original size during the wet season! Visit the small village of Kampong Phluck where you will see houses built on stilts to protect them from Tonlé Sap Lake's ebb and flow. On the way, you will pass floating houses and impressive flooded forests.
