It was invented in San Francisco and there are still three lines operating. Walk around North Beach, the traditional Italian neighborhood, which was to the Beat Generation what Haight-Ashbury was to the Hippie Generation. The term beatnik was coined by the famous San Francisco columnist, Herb Caen. Have a coffee at Café Trieste the imagine bongo playing and poetry readings. Visit City Lights Book Store, made famous by the Beat Generation writers like, Ken Kesey, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. Have a drink at Vesuvios or Specs, two timeless bars that were writers’ haunts. Go up to Coit Tower on the top of Telegraph Hill for fabulous views and to see the murals inside the tower. Have a drink at the “Top of the Mark” for panoramic views. It’s the top floor of the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill. Visit the new Jewish Museum, the Modern Art Museum or the Asian Art Museum. Explore the beautifully renovated Ferry Building, an extraordinary culinary market place in a city that really cares about food. Explore Fisherman’s Wharf where you can look past the tourist shops and see a working fishing fleet and get a crab cocktail to go. Have an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista Café, where the drink was invented. See the Sea Lions that occupied the marina adjacent to Pier 39. Visit the Maritime Museum on the Hyde Street Pier in Fisherman’s Wharf. Union Square is the heart of downtown shopping with the major department stores.
