You may leave your luggage with the bellman or front desk and explore the Base of Park City Mountain Resort or take the free city bus over to historic main street and visit the many art galleries and shops while you wait for your room to be cleaned by 4:00 PM. Meet in our Lake Placid Conference room at 5:45 to receive your name badge and program itinerary, participant list and fill out any missing or required forms if necessary.

For adults age 15 and older, enjoy your morning or afternoon 3-hour ski or snowboard lesson. For all children, enjoy a full-day lesson. In a fascinating evening presentation, learn what the snow grooming crews do all night while we are sleeping.

Note: Explore the mountain and learn better ski or snowboard techniques from your PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) certified instructor. Children age 14 and under will enjoy their ski or snowboard lesson grouped by ability from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and have lunch with their instructor. Adults age 15 and up will enjoy a 3-hour morning or a 3-hour afternoon ski or snowboard lesson. Morning lessons are for beginner to intermediate skiers. Afternoon lessons are for all levels through advanced.

Morning: For all children ages 6-14, enjoy your all-day ski or snowboard lesson grouped by ability from a Certified Professional Ski Instructor. This lesson on the first day is covered in your Road Scholar tuition and will be reserved for you. Lessons take place from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM and includes lunch with your instructor. During other days of the week, additional children lessons are available for approximately $265 and can be paid to the Park City Mountain Resort Ski School. Ski or snowboard lessons provide individual attention, faster learning and a safe environment. The Signature 5 Program guarantees small class sizes (5 students or less) to ensure the child enjoys a well-balanced mountain education. If you choose to sign up and pay for additional ski or snowboard lessons during the remaining days of the program, they can fill to capacity during the holiday period so advanced reservations are recommended by logging onto www.parkcitymountain.com or call 1-800-227-2754 to book your child or grandchild lesson. Helmets are required for all children age 17 and younger or they are not allowed to take a lesson. For all adults ages 15 and older and who are beginning to intermediate level skiers or snowboarders, you will choose either a morning or afternoon lesson (grouped by ability). Morning lessons are 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM. Afternoon lessons are 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. For intermediate to advanced ski or snowboarders your only lesson option is the afternoon lesson from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Additional ski or snowboard lessons for all adults age 15 and older are available every day beyond the first day lesson covered in your Road Scholar tuition. Cost for a 3-hour ski or snowboard lesson is approximately $125 and can be paid to the Park City Mountain Resort Ski School. Advanced reservations not necessary. Helmets required for all children age 17 and younger or they are not allowed to take a lesson.

Lunch: 12:00 - 1:00 Children ages 6-14 will have lunch with their Certified PSIA ski or snowboard instructor on the mountain Lunch for children is covered in the lesson charge included in the Road Scholar tuition. For all adults ages 15 and older, vouchers will be given so participants can choose to eat lunch at one of various restaurants.

Afternoon: Children ages 6-14 continue their ski or snowboard lesson with their PSIA Certified Instructor until 3:00 PM at which time one adult family member must meet at the Ski School lesson area to pick up their child or grandchild. The adult picking up the child will be one who took the morning ski or snowboard lesson since other adults will be in the afternoon ski or snowboard lesson from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Adults ages 15 and older will take their ski or snowboard lesson in the afternoon and will include all intermediate to advanced skiers or snowboarders since morning lessons are not an option for them. Beginning to intermediate skiers or snowboarders can choose to take either the morning or afternoon lesson. Make sure one adult in each family unit takes the morning lesson so they can be the assigned adult to pick up their children or grandchildren at the conclusion of the children's all-day lesson ending at 3:00 PM. Your professional certified PSIA ski or snowboard instructor will work with you individually and as a group to acquire new skiing or boarding techniques which will make permanent changes in your skiing or boarding ability. Make sure you let your instructor know what ski or boarding techniques you would like to work on and improve. The instructors are rated as the best in the country so this is your chance to make significant changes in your ability. Evening: Enjoy a fascinating presentation from Park City Mountain Resorts Grooming Supervisor. Learn what the swing and graveyard shifts do all night while you are sleeping. See how the grooming machines work, how fast the tillers turn and how the beautiful "corduroy" ski surface is produced. Understand how the grooming crew is able to groom hundreds of acres per night and 50 runs. Find out how the groomer hooks their winch cable up to trees or other anchors and pull themselves up the steep black diamond runs. Hear stories of what it is like being all by yourself way in the back country during the middle of the night and what kind of wildlife they encounter. Find out why each grooming machine costs over $350,000.000, how many mechanics the mountain hires to keep this fleet of grooming machines in full operation, how many thousands of gallons of diesel fuel are used a year, how many millions of gallons of water are used for snow making and where the water comes from. Learn the secret of which runs will be groomed during the night and how to read the grooming report. Morning: 9:30 AM to 12:00 Noon. Discover historic buildings on the mountain and follow history guides as they tell fascinating stories of the mines. Learn there are over 1,600 miles of mining tunnels under the mountain and if stretched end to end, would go from Park City to Chicago! Learn how much silver came from the mountain and that Park City silver mines produced more millionaires than all the silver mines in the western United States combined! Learn how King Consolidated Mining Company was buying out all the smaller mine owners as they attracted more investors. Hear the story of "the little guys," owners of California and Com Stock mines doing all they could to reach what they felt was the silver "mother-load" before King Consolidated Mining Company could buy them out and put them out of business. Unfortunately, their time and money ran out and little did they know they were only a few feet away from the richest silver vein ever discovered! King Consolidated Mine Company went down their mine shaft the day after they bought out California/Com Stock Mine (which will be 1,600 feet below where we stand learning about this story) and within hours found the richest silver vein making folks such as the Hurst's, the Vanderbilt's and Unsinkable Molly Brown become millionaires overnight. Go inside the historic Silver King Boarding House built in the 1800's (now a renovated restaurant) and learn why single miners were required by the Silver King Mine Owners sleep in the Boarding House over night and why miners who were married had permission to ride the ore buckets back down the mountain after their 12 hour work shift and sleep at home. Learn how this building was moved to its present location in the 1980's. Discover how Park City survived from booms to busts and why it was listed as a ghost town through the 1950's. Learn that "Lady Bird Johnson" dedicated Park City Mountain Resort as a future world-class ski destination in 1962 and what happened during her speech.

Evening: Enjoy a fascinating presentation from Park City Mountain Resorts Snow Safety Supervisor. Learn all the daily duties the 50 full-time and 400 volunteer Ski Patrol employees do. Learn how they bring down avalanches using bombs and even get to see a typical bomb they use! Discover what the Ski Patrol does with reckless skiers and snowboarders or those who duck under an "out-of-bounds" rope. Learn how the Ski Patrol can rescue over 350 skiers from a lift in just over two hours if the lift breaks down. See intriguing videos of actual avalanches at the mountain and hear stories from survivors of avalanches. Learn what equipment is needed for back-country skiers to help their rescue in the event they are caught in an avalanche. Get to know one of the mountain avalanche rescue dogs in our conference room and how they are trained. During the presentation, we will establish a time and location the following day to see a real rescue take place as the avalanche dog is turned loose to find either a buried sweater, article of clothing or perhaps a volunteer ski patrolmen who is buried in a snow cave.

Spend the morning watching the Mountain's Avalanche Rescue Dog rescue articles of clothing and perhaps a volunteer "victim" get rescued from deep in the snow. Enjoy skiing or snowboarding as a family on the beautifully groomed slopes of Park City.

Note: We will take the lifts to the top of the mountain together as a group for the Avalanche Dog Rescue simulation. Green (beginner slopes) are available from the top of the mountain 3.5 miles all the way down to the bottom! Enjoy the afternoon skiing and snowboarding together as a family.

Morning: 9:30 - 11:30 AM We will take the ski lifts to the top of the mountain as a group, then enjoy watching the avalanche rescue dog find buried clothing or even a volunteer who will be buried in a snow cave. The dog handler and the rescue dog will have no idea where the items or people are buried. Be amazed how quick the dog can find human scent from even a small glove buried deep in the snow. Then watch the rescue dog dig like a snow blower and find to the article or victim. Watch the tug-of-war reward the dog owner gets to do with his rescue dog as soon as our articles and victims are located.

Evening: 6:45 - 8:00 PM Enjoy designing and building a photo frame using paints and other materials provided. When the paint dries, pick out your favorite family ski portraits of action photos the group leaders have taken during the week and install it in your frame. This will be a treasured souvenir you will take home with you to always bring back fond memories skiing with your grandchildren and adult children. From the child's perspective, cherish the memories skiing with grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, brothers and sisters.

Enjoy your final day skiing together. Explore Park City History Museum on historic Main Street and learn about the enduring legacy of the mining days through the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Celebrate New Year's Eve in Robert Redford's Zoom Restaurant.

Note: Following our exploration of Park City History Museum and the group New Year's Eve program finale dinner in the historic Union Pacific Railway Station (now owned by the actor Robert Redford and called "Zoom" Restaurant), we will continue to celebrate the new year by returning to our lodge for the count-down in our Lake Placid Conference Room. With party hats and blowers, we will count down and watch the ball drop in Time Square (10 PM Mountain Time) on our big screen TV and say Happy New Year!

Afternoon: 1:00 - 2:30 Continue to enjoy your last day skiing or snowboarding as a family at Park City Mountain Resort. 3:30 Load a free city bus as a group and ride over to Historic Main Street and the Park City History Museum, which used to be the city office upstairs, the police station on the main floor, and the jail cells in the basement. 4:00 - 6:00 PM Enjoy an expert-led discovery, from Park City's Historian, all three floors of the museum starting in the basement where the silver mining history is located. Try your skill using the "Widow Maker" the air-powered drill miners used to drill holes for dynamite. (The dust created in the early mining days before they mixed water with the drilling, caused silicosis for any miner using this drill, which resulted in early death of these miners while still in their 30's and 40's. Their untimely deaths would leave behind their wife and children. Hence the nick name for the drill became "The Widow Maker" Push down on the TNT handle to make a mock explosive rumble the walls of the basement. Explore through the original jail cells which were used until the 1960's. Venture to the main floor and learn what Park City was like as a ghost town and how local residents got along with the "hippies" moving into town in the 1960's and 1970's. Then learn the fascinating transformation of Park City when it received government funds to build a ski resort and following the resorts dedication from Lady Bird Johnson in 1962 grew from a meager population to the top ski destination in the country and host of the 2002 Olympic Games. Gain an appreciation of how anyone could have purchased a home in Park City between 1960 and 1975 for only $300 - $800 dollars (just had to pay back taxes owed) and today that same home will sell for over two million dollars!

Dinner: 6:00 - 8:30 PM Enjoy dinner in the historic Union Pacific Railway Station at the base of main street. Now a gourmet restaurant owned by Hollywood Actor, Robert Redford, he calls it Zoom Restaurant (Zoom Lens on a camera) in tribute to the Sundance Film Festival he started. As ore started rolling out of mines in Park City in 1869, the Union Pacific railroad was completing its section of he transcontinental railroad in northern Utah. The Union Pacific seized the opportunity to build a spur line to Park City in 1880, which was used to remove ore and supply coal to fuel the Park City mining operations. The depot contained freight, ticket offices, passenger baggage, wait rooms, and quarters for the station masters which were located on the second floor. The main dining room still houses one of the scales used for weighing freight. When work was completed in October of 1886 the. Park Record Newspaper applauded the results by asserting, "The building is one of the finest in Park City, the design is modern tasteful and brilliant yellow paint adorns it on all sides." The Depot ceased functioning as a railroad station in 1976-77. The last train ran on the Echo/Park City spur line in 1986. The rail bed remains today as the Union Pacific rail trail. Enjoy this gourmet restaurant as we raise our glasses and give toast for a Happy New Year Road Scholar style!

Evening: 8:30 - 9:30 Explore Historic Main Street with a guide and hear stories of the Egyptian Theater, the ghost of Lizzy and more! Before the Egyptian Theater, The Opera House, was built in the 1880's. Touring theatrical companies came through town performing many a production and bringing culture and the arts to this rambunctious silver mining town. Unfortunately, The Opera House was gutted by the great 1898 fire which consumed most of Park City's buildings. Undaunted, the people rebuilt and called it the Dewey Theatre. In March of 1916, as a huge snow storm was dumping over 10 feet of snow on Park City, a silent film was playing in the theater. The manager heard roof timbers cracking. Feared the roof might cave in on his audience and he didn't want to issue any refunds by stopping the silent movie. He told the projectionist to run the film as fast as he could and the piano player to do his best to just keep up with the film. As soon as the audience was quickly escorted out of the theater when the movie ended, the roof collapsed injuring no one. In 1922, the people of Park City once again rebuilt their theatre, but this time, showcasing an Egyptian theme inside and out because of the recent discovery of King Tut's tomb in Egypt in the early '20's. 9:30 Load City Bus back to Lodge. 9:45 - 10:00 PM PROGRAM FINALE! Dig through our bin of party supplies and pick your celebration hats, blowers, banners, necklaces, costumes and other party supplies, then count down to the new year as a group in our Lake Placid Room! On our 8 foot television screen, watch the ball drop and celebrate Happy New Year with New York at Time Square (10:00 PM Utah Time, 12:00 Midnight Eastern time). Enjoy our last night together in Utah and share your family memories of your Rocky Mountain ski get-away with the group and share your New Year's Resolutions.
