Description: The modest yet comfortable Days Inn & Suites at 1601 State Street in Santa Barbara is conveniently located within walking distance of many main attractions of downtown Santa Barbara. Although it does not have a restaurant on the premises or some of the features of a full-service hotel, the Days Inn & Suites has been utilized by Road Scholar for several years because it affords our participants close proximity to the major cultural sites of Santa Barbara. You are only blocks away from the scenic beauty of Santa Barbara's beach and harbor area and moments away from seeing internationally renowned exhibits at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Broadway-caliber stage productions at the historic Granada, Arlington and Lobero Theatres. You can also walk to many of the fine dining establishments for which Santa Barbara is renowned.

Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Check into the Days Inn & Suites after 3:00pm.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session.

ORIENTATION: We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, any other administrative issues, and answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

CROSSING POINTS: Participants introduce themselves to the rest of the group.

Dinner: Julia Child inspired dinner menu served at local restaurant.

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants.

Follow the evolution of this remarkable woman who changed the way America cooks and thinks about dining, and who revolutionized the quality and availability of food from farms to restaurants and supermarkets, and onto tables across the USA.

FIELD TRIP: Board bus to Santa Barbara City College Culinary School for lunch.

Lunch: Julia Child-inspired lunch served at John Dunn Gourmet Dining Room at Santa Barbara City College School of Culinary Arts.

Afternoon: HANDS ON EXPERIENCE: Santa Barbara by the Glass

A friend of Julia Child's introduces several flavors of Santa Barbara Wine Country. We'll taste and compare, finding the wine you like best.

Afternoon: CLASS: History of French Cuisine

"Why French Cuisine?" Learn the answer as we discuss the history of French cooking from the kitchens of Luis XIV to Julia Child's interpretations for an American audience.

FIELD TRIP: Guided walk of Santa Barbara Farmers Market with professional chef from the morning food preparation demonstration

Day Four: Wednesday, October 10 - Independent Departure/Santa Barbara Courthouse
Breakfast: Julia Child inspired breakfast menu served at local restaurant, conveniently located near the Santa Barbara Courthouse.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Santa Barbara Courthouse

Explore the Santa Barbara Courthouse, the jewel in Santa Barbara's architectural crown, on a private one-hour guided walk. A bonus is the must-see view of Julia Child's Santa Barbara from the top of the 85 foot clock tower. Group walks back to the hotel, returning at about 11:30am.
