Day One: Sunday, August 16 - Orientation to your Road Scholar program and part...
Afternoon: Independent arrivals to Quality Inn Garden of the Gulf in Summerside after 3:00 pm. After checking into your room, enjoy a walk, a swim in the indoor or outdoor pool or some exercise in the on-site exercise room.

Dinner: Due to the fact that many flights into Prince Edward Island arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, we do not schedule a formal "welcome dinner". However, we will have some snacks and dessert available during orientation. Please plan to have dinner on own prior to 7:00 pm orientation or plan to eat afterward (The Brothers Two Restaurant is located next door to the hotel).

Evening: Program orientation will be held at 7:00 pm in one of the meeting rooms at the Quality Inn Garden of the Gulf. At orientation, you will receive your name tag, detailed program itinerary, a list of participants, area maps, etc. You will meet your Road Scholar program staff along with all the other program participants. You will also receive specific program information regarding hotels, restaurants, transportation, site description, policies, etc.

Day Two: Monday, August 17 - Intro to the Canadian Maritimes/Summerside's wate...
Intro to the Canadian Maritimes/Summerside's waterfront/French River/Community Ceilidh

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel

Morning: Enjoy an introductory lecture on the history and culture of the Canadian Maritime provinces. Hear some engaging stories about shipwrecks, rum running, and colorful stories of characters from Prince Edward Island history. Experience a guided tour of historic Summerside and learn about fox farming, fires and Samuel Holland, the great map-maker.

Lunch: Lunch prepared by a Culinary Institute chef incorporating Island seafood and farm products at his lovely country inn. Always a hit!

Afternoon: After lunch you will head to French River, one of the most picturesque and photographed spots on PEI. You will have a presentation and a chance to walk on the beach and visit a seaside graveyard to learn about ecology, climate change and the famous Yankee Gale. You will also get some inside information about the lobster and mussel industries on PEI and learn how lobsters are caught and mussels are grown. Then you'll do some sightseeing and exploring along the north shore of the Island and into the community of Malpeque. Some free time is set aside for you back at your hotel before departure for dinner.

Dinner: Dinner will be at a local inn known for its wonderful food and outstanding service.

Evening: Attend a community ceilidh (traditional music, dance, humour)

Day Three: Tuesday, August 18 - Green Gables National Historic Site/Charlottetown...
Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel

Morning: Have an engaging presentation about Prince Edward Islanders as shared through stories and songs. Learn the facts and the fiction behind the novel Anne of Green Gables while on a guided visit to Green Gables National Historic Site in Cavendish.

Lunch: Lunch in Cavendish restaurant

Afternoon: Discover the rich history of settlement, conflict and change during the struggle for control of North America between the French and English and have a guided walk in historic downtown Charlottetown. Enjoy some famous Cow's ice cream, enjoy an exploration of the waterfront area and some free time downtown. The group will then travel to the seaside community of Rustico to enjoy scenery and ambiance of a PEI fishing village.

Dinner: Experience a traditional Prince Edward Island Lobster Supper! (other options available)

Evening: Free evening after dinner.

Day Four: Wednesday, August 19 - Farm Visit/Crossing Northumberland Strait to New ...
Farm Visit/Crossing Northumberland Strait to New Brunswick/Fort Beausejour/Sackville

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel

Morning: Visit a PEI organic farm and experience the vision, passion and commitment these young farmers have for the land and their province. Stop at Gateway Village to view and learn about the Confederation Bridge and then travel over the 9.5 mile-long Bridge to New Brunswick. From there you will head to the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border area where your exploration of this historically significant area begins.

Lunch: Lunch in the quaint and historic town of Amherst in a great little restaurant. Enjoy the local art that adorns the walls of this little gem.

Afternoon: Your guide for the afternoon will share the human and natural history of this very important part of North America. Learn about the significance of this region to the history of the United States and experience the landscapes and unique natural history for which this area is known. Visits include Fort Beausejour, Acadian dykelands, and historic areas in Sackville, and a guided exploration of the Tantramar region. Check into the Coastal Inn, Sackville

Dinner: Dinner will be enjoyed at the Historic Bell Inn, renowned for its ambiance, food (Culinary Institute chefs!) and local wines and beer.

Day Five: Thursday, August 20 - Nova Scotia/Grand Pre'/Winery Tour and Tasting/An...
Breakfast: Breakfast on-site at the Coastal Inn, Sackville

Morning: Travel from Sackville, NB into the province of Nova Scotia. Experience the place and the story that influenced Longfellow to write the epic poem, Evangeline. Learn about the first Acadians to settle this region in the 1600's and about their tragic deportation by the British.View dykelands, gardens and historic buildings at Grand Pre' National Historic Site.

Lunch: Lunch will enjoyed at a fine restaurant located in the middle of 60 acres of high-bush blueberries! The buffet meal is always a hit and the meal is followed by a presentation on blueberries.

Afternoon: Learn about Fair Trade and the impact "Just Us" has made on this movement. (Wolfville is Canada's first Fair Trade town due to the initial efforts of "Just Us".) Wolfville has a wonderful climate for growing fruits, vegetables and grapes for wine. We will visit one of the wineries and farm markets for which Wolfville is reknowned.

Dinner: Enjoy a wonderful meal at your hotel for the evening, The Old Orchard Inn, where the meal always receives rave reviews.

Day Six: Friday, August 21 - Halifax/ Pier 21/ Maritime Museum/Free time on Ha...
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the Old Orchard Inn prior to departing for Halifax

Morning: Travel to Halifax where you will enjoy an on-board guided visit of this historic city. Learn all about the Halifax Explosion, the role the city played after the sinking of the Titanic, and enjoy a walk in the beautiful historic public gardens. Your guide will fill you with all kinds of facts presented with humor and intrigue....always a special experience for Road Scholar participants.

Lunch: You will be enjoying lunch on your own along the beautiful Halifax waterfront followed by some free time to explore museums, craft studios and shops.

Afternoon: Visit Pier 21-Canada's National Immigration Museum (similar to Ellis Island in the United States). Here you will learn all about the significance of this facility for immigrants to Canada, Home Children, War Brides and as a staging site for the military during two World Wars. Fascinating exhibits, a wonderful film and a dedicated guide make this site come alive. You'll also have a chance to explore the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic which houses boats and ships of all types and sizes along with artifacts from the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion.

Dinner: Dinner in Halifax is always a special treat as you dine overlooking the Halifax harbour.

Evening: Check into hotel. Free evening after check in

Day Seven: Saturday, August 22 - Pictou/Ferry to Prince Edward Island/Tour of East...
Pictou/Ferry to Prince Edward Island/Tour of Eastern PEI/Prince Edward Island National Park

Breakfast: Breakfast on-site at your hotel

Morning: Travel from Halifax to Pictou where we will visit the museum and quay that highlights the Ship Hector. The Hector brought the first settlers from Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1733 which began the wave of Scottish migration that has had such an impact on the development of the province. Learn about the importance of their voyage and the influence of the Hector families on Pictou, and the rest of North America.

Lunch: Boxed lunch to enjoy while traveling on the ferry from Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island.

Afternoon: A ferry across the Northumberland Strait takes us from Nova Scotia back to Prince Edward Island Enjoy a guided tour of the eastern end of the Island followed by an excursion into Prince Edward Island National Park for some scenic coastal views, a harbour and lighthouse visit and time on the beach. Then travel back to Summerside to check into the Quality Inn Garden of the Gulf.
