Day Two: Thursday, July 16 - Check-in \ Orientation \ Welcome Reception \ Neig...
Note: Leisurely walk to get your Rome legs going.

Arrive To: Rome airport (Leonardo da Vinci). A Road Scholar representative will be in the first public area of the terminal and lead you to the coach for the transfer to hotel. The ride is about an hour, allowing for city traffic congestion.

Morning: The group leader will be at the hotel to welcome arriving travelers and indicate where to store bags until check-in time. A light walk will be organized for those with early morning arrivals while waiting for lunch and hotel check-in

Lunch: Is served buffet style at a restaurant a block from the hotel. A choice of sparkling and natural water is included at this and every group meal during the program. Soft drinks or, for the adults, beer and wine at your own expense.

Afternoon: Settle into your room, meet at appointed time for Orientation and Welcome Reception. The group leader will distribute the welcome packet with maps and the most updated schedule. Brief neighborhood walk points out banks, pharmacies and stores.

Dinner: At 7:30 at a restaurant near the hotel. Plated table service with a fixed menu. In keeping with local customs for meal times, for the duration of the program, most dinners will be at 7:30. Restaurants open for dinner from 7:30 - 9:30 pm. Snack bars and cafés in general have continuous opening hours.

Day Three: Friday, July 17 - Capitoline Museum \ Mosaic Workshop
Note: The incline of 20 steps to the Campidoglio and the entrance to the Capitoline Museum, is facilitated by very long tread steps with very low rise. Coach ride to the Mosaic Workshop is about 20 minutes in urban traffic.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Each day the buffet in this and other program site hotels will have an egg dish, sliced meat and cheese platters, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, muesli, pastries, cakes, breads, jams, juice, coffee, milk (whole only), mineral water, and a selection of teas.

Morning: Set out on foot for the Campidoglio passing the Monument to Victor Emanuel II, king of unified Italy. At the top of the Campidoglio is the Capitoline Museum. In the museum there are numerous busts of various consuls, emperors and women who figured in Roman history; the She- Wolf, symbol of Rome; the imposing equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius; the foundations of the most important temple--Jupiter Capitolinus; the Dying Gaul; and the Capitoline Venus. From the Tabullarium, ancient Rome's archives, there is a commanding view of the Roman Forum.

Lunch: Walk back down the hill to board a coach to a studio art mosaic workshop. Lunch at the café served buffet style.

Afternoon: Come to appreciate the art form of mosaics as you participate in creating your own mosaic with instructors at a local art school. Keep your decorated piece as a memento. Coach back to the hotel.

Dinner: At a restaurant near the hotel. Fixed menu, plated table service.

Day Four: Saturday, July 18 - Vatican Museums \ Sistine Chapel \ S. Peter's Bas...
Note: Expect crowds at the Vatican Museums. Walk a few flights of stairs to visit the various galleries and art filled rooms. Steps along the path to the Sistine Chapel.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: In the hotel meeting room an art historian gives an illustrated lecture on the artistic highlights of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel masterpieces in the Vatican Museum. After a short break, board the coach to the Vatican.

Lunch: At a restaurant within the walls of Vatican City, lunch with plated table service consists of a multiple courses, dessert and water.

Afternoon: Short walk to the entrance of the Vatican Museums. Reserved entrance. Meet the local expert who will lead you through the museum, which is actually comprised of various important collections of art. You will learn about singular pieces, such as the Laocoon; Apollo Belvedere. Visit the rooms by Raphael including the "School of Athens", and of course, the Sistine Chapel. The visit continues to the "new" S. Peter's Basilica (only 500 years old) where you can admire Michelangelo's Pieta' and works by Bernini. Walk through the Piazza San Pietro and board the coach back to the hotel.

Dinner: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy the menu and budget of your choice. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Day Five: Sunday, July 19 - Patrician Palace \ Trevi Fountain \ Roman Forum a...
Note: A staircase leads to the underground house site. See firsthand how the modern city was built on the foundations of sites from previous centuries. The walk in the Forum is on original cobblestones, uneven dirt path, a gentle incline. Climb 4 flights of steep stairs to the top level of the Colosseum. There is an elevator at one end of the site for the truly needy. If you take the elevator down, you will have to retrace your steps to reach the exit at the opposite end of the oval arena.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Set out on foot for Palazzo Valentini, a few blocks from the hotel. Modern excavations reveal the ruins of ancient Roman houses. A multimedia presentation brings the 2,000 year old ruins to life. Enjoy a stroll to the Piazza di Trevi. Currently the fountain is drained and under scaffolding as it is being cleaned and restored, but the city has set up a catwalk for visitors to see up close some of the magnificent statues and a small pool for the traditional coin toss.

Lunch: At a restaurant near Piazza di Trevi. The meal is served buffet style.

Afternoon: Set out on foot for the Roman Forum (walk is about 1/3 mile), Rome's ancient religious and civic downtown. Walk along the Via Sacra, starting point for "all roads lead to Rome" and where triumphal processions passed. The expert will describe the activities that took place in the buildings, of which you see only the remains, including the temple built over the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated. The guided walk continues to the Flavian Amphitheater, or Colosseum.Centuries ago it could easily seat 50,000 spectators. At the conclusion of the visit walk down the Via dei Fori Imperiali past Trajan's Market to a characteristic restaurant for dinner.

Dinner: At a restaurant on the Via dei Fori Imperiali (fixed menu, plated table service). Short walk back to the hotel.

Day Six: Monday, July 20 - Piazza Walk \ Train to Florence
Note: Extensive walking and standing in the heart of Rome's pedestrian only area around Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Leisurely walk from train station in Florence to hotel

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Have checked luggage ready for van transfer to the hotel in Florence. Leave hand luggage in the hotel deposit area. Walk (about 1/2 mile) to the Pantheon, the celestial observatory dating back to the 2nd century. The walk continues a few blocks over to Piazza Navona. Learn how an ancient stadium of Domitian (81-96) was transformed into the quintessential Baroque Piazza Navona, at the center of which is Bernini's famous Fountain of the Four Rivers.

Lunch: Is served buffet style at a restaurant near the hotel.

Afternoon: Short walk back to the hotel to pick up hand luggage. Coach transfer to Termini Station. On a Eurostar train travel on a high speed train at speeds reaching 120 mph. Arrive in Florence around 4 pm. Check into the hotel, and avail yourself of the roof garden pool to cool off. Meet at the appointed time to walk together to the restaurant for dinner.

Dinner: At a restaurant in the neighborhood of the hotel. Fixed menu, plated table service. Enjoy some traditional Tuscan dishes.

Evening: A stroll in the neighborhood of the hotel serves to orient you on the layout of the city, locate landmarks, find ATM's and pharmacies.

Day Seven: Tuesday, July 21 - Fresco Workshop \ History of Florence
Note: Extended walking in Florence, the streets of which are mostly closed to traffic.The walk from the hotel to the Piazza della Signoria is about a mile.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Walk to Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florence. At the Palazzo Vecchio workshop learn from an art teacher the steps required to paint using the fresco technique; from creating the lines with a sack of coal dust, to spreading the fresh plaster and mixing the pigments. After the 6" x 9" tile dries, you may choose to keep it, otherwise it is recycled. Expert-led visit of Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's city hall, to see original pieces of art, including Donatello's Judith and Holofernes and sculptures by Michelangelo. See Machiavelli's study when he was Secretary of State for the Republic.

Lunch: At a restaurant near the Piazza della Signoria. Fixed menu, plated table service.

Afternoon: Free time after lunch to explore the center of Florence on your own or take a refreshing swim at the hotel. In the late afternoon at the meeting room of the hotel, a local expert gives some background of the city of Florence and the region of Tuscany. Learn about the history of Florence and the families and conditions which favored it becoming the "Cradle of the Renaissance". Why did artists like: Giotto, Masaccio, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo flourish in Florence?

Day Eight: Wednesday, July 22 - Renaissance Art \ Galileo Museum \ Uffizi Gallery
Note: The Uffizi Gallery has multiple floors with long staircases; each floor of the centuries old building has very high ceilings. The painting collections are situated on the 3rd floor. A small elevator (max capacity 4 persons) for disabled visitors may be available. A separate staircase at the end of the picture gallery's long corridor leads back down to the ground floor. The restrooms are located between floors 3 and 2 and in the level below ground floor as you exit the museum.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: In the hotel meeting room, an art historian presents an illustrated lecture on Renaissance Art in preparation for the self-guided visit of the Uffizi Gallery. After a short break, set out on foot to the Galileo Museum of Science. Learn about the scientific revolution and see Galileo's telescope which aided in his studies of celestial orbits. The docent will talk about the wooden conceptual models of the planets and their orbits, some 10 feet tall, which were used to argue whether the solar system was geocentric or heliocentric. Many interactive exhibits in the relatively new museum. If you have a medical background you may find interesting the surgical instruments used centuries ago.

Lunch: On your own. There are a variety of cafés, trattorias, gelaterie, and restaurants in the heart of Florence.

Afternoon: Meet at the designated time and place in Piazza della Signoria. For the self guided visit we will enter the Uffizi as a group, but you are free to spend as much time as you wish. This museum holds a most extensive collection of art, tracing the development from Gothic to medieval to Renaissance to Mannerist paintings. You will find many recognizable masterpieces, including DaVinci's Annunciation, Botticelli's Birth of Venus and the Primavera, some Titians, Michelangelo's Holy Family, and a few Caravaggios as well as Artemisia Gentileschi. There is a coffee bar at the end of the second corridor, on top of the Loggia, with a wonderful view of the watch tower and Duomo where you can get a refreshment and rest. Walk back to the hotel.

Day Nine: Thursday, July 23 - Renaissance Frescoes \ San Lorenzo \ Michelangelo...
Note: Narrow sidewalks along the way to the Accademia delle Belle Arti.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Set out on foot to Piazza Santa Maria Novella. With your new found knowledge of fresco painting, your will have a new appreciation of the frescoes by Masaccio and Ghirlandaio in the church of Santa Maria Novella. The visit continues to San Lorenzo, parish church of the Medici family. The plain brick facade belies the harmonious beauty of its interior. Free time to explore the Market of San Lorenzo, where vendors with carts sell Florentine leather goods, souvenirs, textiles and T shirts. In the steel building are fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh and cured meats and cheeses as well as a food court (open until late in the evening).

Lunch: On your own. A variety of options at the farm to table food court of the Mercato Centrale di San Lorenzo.

Day Ten: Friday, July 24 - Train to Venice \ Glass Bead Session \ Murano
Note: Walk to S. M. Novella train station for high speed train to Venice. Board Vaporetto, Venice's public transportation system of vessels, pass provided for duration. The boats are often crowded, use your elbows if you need to get on.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Luggage transported to Venice hotel by van. On the train you will carry only your hand bag, tote, or day pack. Arrive in Venice, board vaporetto, Venice's public transportation boat to the stop nearest the hotel. Deposit hand luggage, as the rooms are not yet ready.

Lunch: At a restaurant near the hotel. Fixed menu, plated table service.

Afternoon: Boat to the island of Murano. Learn about glass making and create your own glass tile decoration under the supervision of an instructor at a working glass school. The tile dish you create will be fused the in the kiln and cured overnight. It will be delivered to the hotel before departure day. Vaporetto to the Accademia, the stop closest to the hotel.

Dinner: At a restaurant near the hotel. Taste regional dishes. Fixed menu; plated table service.

Evening: At leisure. Use your vaporetto pass to take a ride along the Grand Canal.

Day Eleven: Saturday, July 25 - Venetian History \ S. Mark's Basilica
Note: The lecture is held in a conference center a few blocks from the hotel. St. Mark's museum requires ascending one flight of steep stairs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Short walk to a conference center. A local historian presents an introduction to the Serenissima with a lecture entitled The Building of Venice.

Lunch: At a local pizzeria along the Zattere canal. A variety of pizzas and salads will be served family style.

Afternoon: Ride the vaporetto to St. Mark's Square. A local expert leads the visit of the Basilica. Marvel at the mosaics decorating the walls and ceilings--over 60,000 square feet. On the second floor is the original "quadriga" a team of four gilded bronze horses that was looted from Constantinople. Replicas now stand in the elements above the entrance to the Basilica. See illuminated manuscripts and other documents related to the church. Vaporetto back to the Accademia, the stop closest to the hotel. Easy walk from San Marco to the hotel crosses the tall wooden Accademia bridge with excellent views of the Grand Canal.

Day Twelve: Sunday, July 26 - Dragon Boat Lesson \ Doge's Palace
Note: Row, row, row your dragon boat hard if you want to win; otherwise sit at the stern and enjoy the ride.Two flights of stairs to reach the upper floors of the Doge's Palace. Narrow passages through the rooms of the Prisons and over the Bridge of Sighs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Vaporetto to the Venetian Crew Club. Form a few teams for a dragon boat lesson and race along the canal. Vaporetto back to the Accademia, the stop closest to the hotel.

Lunch: At a restaurant in the vicinity of the hotel. Fixed menu, plated table service.

Afternoon: Vaporetto to St. Mark's Square to meet the expert who will lead us through the Doge's Palace, Venice's government headquarters, decorated by Titian, Canaletto and Giorgione, just to mention a few. From the richly decorated halls of the Palazzo, walk over the Bridge of Sighs for a unique view of the canal. It is said that those who were condemned "sigh" at their last view of the sky through the narrow passages to their prison cells. Very few prisoners were freed from the prison.

Day Thirteen: Monday, July 27 - Rialto Bridge \ Artisan Workshop \ Modern Art at ...
Rialto Bridge \ Artisan Workshop \ Modern Art at the Guggenheim Collection

Note: Leisurely walk around the Rialto Bridge area, and to an artisan's workshop.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Vaporetto to the Rialto. A local expert leads the walk around the oldest part of Venice, the Rialto district, and its famous bridge. Stop at an artisan's workshop to learn about the carving techniques of making gondola oars and oar locks.

Lunch: Choose your lunch from the many offerings around the market area of the Rialto. Group leader will have suggestions.

Afternoon: Ride the vaporetto or walk to the Accademia. Having been surrounded by ancient and Renaissance masterpieces and structures, enjoy the modern art collection at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Relax in the courtyard of the palazzo on the Grand Canal while the docents introduce the life and times of the wealthy American collector. The group splits in two for the visit of the collection housed in the small rooms of the gallery. The docent leading the students elicits their reactions to the form and expression they see in the works of modern art.

Dinner: Recap your adventures and share your favorite memories with your fellow participants at our farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant. Fixed menu, plated table service.

Day Fourteen: Tuesday, July 28 - Arrivederci Venezia
Note: You and your luggage transfer to the airport by water taxi. From where the water taxi docks it is 500 yard walk under a canopy to reach the terminal. With a 1 euro coin you can release a luggage cart at the dock; the coin is refunded at the carriage stand inside the terminal.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Sack breakfast for those with early departure times.

Morning: Transfer to Venice's Marco Polo Airport.
