Arrive To: Rome airport, transfer to hotel.

Morning: If flights arrive before rooms are ready for 2PM check-in, leave luggage at hotel and either begin exploring the area or wait in the lobby or ride the elevator to the top floor to see the roof garden view. Group Leader will be there to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: After lunch settle in room. We suggest not taking a long nap it makes adjusting to new time zone harder. Meet at appointed time for Orientation, Welcome Reception, and Neighborhood Walk to familiarize yourself with banks, pharmacies and stores.

History of Rome \ Capitoline Museum \ Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel Lecture

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Learn about Roman history through an illustrated lecture, then reinforce your knowledge by an expert led visit to the Capitoline Museum of Roman antiquities. See the busts of various consuls, emperors and women who figured in Roman history. See the She Wolf, symbol of Rome; the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the foundations of the most important temple--Jupiter Capitolinus; the Dying Gaul, and the Capitoline Venus. From the Tabullarium, ancient Rome's archives, there is a commanding view of the Forum. After exiting the museum, you may wish to walk up the steps behind the last gallery to reach the balcony of the Monument to Victor Emanuel II, king of Unified Italy. The large white memorial you see from your hotel. Great panoramic views of the city.

Day Four: Saturday, July 11 - Vatican Museums \ Sistine Chapel \ S. Peter's Bas...
Vatican Museums \ Sistine Chapel \ S. Peter's Basilica \ Mosaic Laboratory

Note: Expect crowds at the Vatican Museums. Walk a few flights of stairs to visit the various galleries and art filled rooms. Steps along the path to the Sistine Chapel.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Transfer to the Vatican Museums for reserved entrance time. Meet the local expert who will lead you through this museum comprised of a number of collections. You will learn about singular pieces, such as the Laocoon; Apollo Belvedere; gilded Hercules; and the rooms by Raphael including the "School of Athens". The visit continues to the "new" S. Peter's Basilica (only 500 years old) to see Michelangelo's Pieta' and works by Bernini.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Once inside S. Peter's Basilica, you will learn that all "paintings" are actually micro-mosaics and that mosaics decorate much of the interior. Come to appreciate this art form as you participate in creating your own mosaic with instructors at a local art school. Coach to the hotel.

Day Five: Sunday, July 12 - Roman Forum \ Colosseum \ Patrician Palace
Note: Walk through the Forum is on original cobble paving stones, uneven dirt path, a little incline. For an authentic reenactment, climb the 4 flights of stairs to the top of the Colosseum, or ride the elevator. Steps to reach the lowest level of the underground house

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Meet the expert who will lead us through the Forum, ancient Rome's civic and religious center. Walk along the Via Sacra, original road from which "all roads lead to Rome" originate. Use your imagination as the expert raises the walls of the ruins and paints a picture of what took place in the various buildings (basilicas) and see a portion of the temple that was built over the place where Julius Caesar was cremated. Stand there and realize that the Forum dates back 2800 years. Exit Forum and enter into the Flavian Amphitheater, better known as the Colosseum. Capable of seating over 50,000 spectators, imagine gladiatorial games and pageantry.

Lunch: Lunch on your own.

Afternoon: Hypogea is the word used to describe buildings that have since been covered over with dirt or other building materials. Visit an excavated Roman patrician house with an expert to learn what we can about life in ancient Rome among the wealthy.

Day Six: Monday, July 13 - Spanish Steps \Trevi \ Pantheon \ Navona \ Train ...
Note: About a 1.5 mile walk to the center attractions not reachable by coach. Leisurely walk from train station in Florence to hotel

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Have checked luggage ready for van transfer to the hotel in Florence. Leave hand luggage in the hotel deposit area. Meet the local expert who will lead a walk of discovery at the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Return to hotel to pick up hand luggage and transfer to Termini Station to experience travel on a high speed train at speeds reaching 120 mph. Arrive in Florence 95 minutes after departure. Check into hotel, and avail yourself of the roof garden pool to cool off. Meet at the appointed time for a neighborhood walk.

Dinner: Dinner at a restaurant in the vicinity of the San Lorenzo Market.

Evening: Excursion of the historical section of Florence to orient everyone on the layout of the city, locate landmarks, find ATM's and pharmacies.

Day Seven: Tuesday, July 14 - History of Florence Lesson \ Duomo Museum \ Miche...
Note: Minimal exertion, Duomo Museum requires climbing a few flights of stairs or take the elevator. Leisure walk to the Accademia delle Belle Arti

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Learn about the history of Florence and the families and conditions which favored it becoming the "Cradle of the Renaissance". Why did artist like: Giotto, Masaccio, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo flourish in Florence? With an expert go to see many pieces in person at the newly enlarged Duomo Museum, where the original "Gates of Paradise" are on display as well as the Florence Pieta', which Michelangelo sculpted for his own tomb.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch a professor of art history gives an on-site lecture on Michelangelo's most famous work of art, the David. Learn about its significance and history. Free time follows where the musically inclined can visit the collection of Renaissance and Baroque instruments or you can explore other areas of Florence.

Dinner: Dinner on your own.

Evening: At leisure, perhaps a walk of discovery after dinner, such as cross Ponte Vecchio to explore the "Oltrarno" district.

Day Eight: Wednesday, July 15 - Uffizi Art Lecture \ Uffizi Gallery \ Fresco Pain...
Note: The Uffizi Gallery visit requires climbing 3 flights of stairs a couple of flights are required for Palazzo Vecchio also.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Meet in the lecture room for a presentation by an art historian on the masterpieces you will see in the Uffizi Gallery. At the conclusion and a short break, set off to the Uffizi Gallery for a self-directed visit. We have a reserved entrance time. Stay as long as you like. At the end of the second corridor, there is a snack and coffee bar where you can purchase some refreshments (table service at an up-charge). There is also a great view from the terrace. Meet at the appointed place and time.

Lunch: Select your eatery. Group leader will have suggestions for places to eat.

Afternoon: At the appointed time, meet at the Palazzo Vecchio for an expert-led visit of the meeting rooms of the Florence government and some of the residential quarters of the rulers to see original pieces of art, including Donatello's Judith and Holofernes and sculptures by Michelangelo. See Machiavelli's study when he was Secretary of State for the Republic. In the art room of the Palazzo Vecchio (still the City Hall since the Middle Ages), a teacher illustrates the steps required to paint using the fresco technique; from creating the lines with a sack of coal dust, to spreading the fresh plaster and mixing the pigments. Bring your painting skills and decorate a memento on a 6"x 9" tile. If you like it you may choose to keep it, otherwise it is recycled.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Enjoy walking in the squares closed to vehicular traffic. Be entertained by street performers as you savor a refreshing gelato.

Day Nine: Thursday, July 16 - Frescoes in S. M. Novella \ Market Walk \ Galileo...
Note: Leisurely walk to the S.M. Novella, S. Lorenzo Market and Galileo Science Museum behind the Uffizi.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Expert led visit to Church of S. Maria Novella, begun in 1246. With your newly acquired appreciation fresco paintings study the work of Masaccio and Ghirlandaio and the master of the Spanish Chapel. Continue to the Market of San Lorenzo, where vendors with carts sell Florentine leather goods, souvenirs, textiles and T shirts. In the steel building are fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh and cured meats and cheeses as well as a food court where many find inexpensive dishes at reasonable prices.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Learn about the scientific revolution in the Galileo Museum of science. See his telescope which aided in his studies of celestial orbits. The docent will talk about the wooden conceptual models of the planets and their orbits, some 10 feet tall, which were used to argue whether the solar system was geocentric or heliocentric. Surgeons will see early instruments and notice quite a similarity between early and present day versions. Many interactive exhibits.

Day Ten: Friday, July 17 - Train to Venice \ School of Glass Activity \ Mura...
Note: Walk to S. M. Novella train station for high speed train to Venice. Board Vaporetto, Venice's public transportation system of vessels, pass provided for duration. The boats are often crowded, use your elbows if you need to get on.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Luggage transported to Venice hotel by van. On the train you will carry only your hand bag, tote, or day pack. Arrive in Venice, board Vaporetto, Venice's public transportation boat to the stop nearest hotel. Deposit hand luggage, as the rooms are not yet ready.

Lunch: Quick lunch at the a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Ride the Vaporetto to the island of Murano. Learn about glass making and create your own glass tile decoration under the supervision of an instructor at a working glass school. The tile dish you create will be fused the in the kiln and once cured overnight. It will be delivered to you prior to departure. Return to the hotel.

Dinner: At a local restaurant to savor Venetian cuisine.

Day Eleven: Saturday, July 18 - Venetian History \ Dragon Boat Race \ S. Mark's B...
Note: Row, row, row your boat hard if you want to win; otherwise sit at the stern and enjoy the ride. St. Mark's museum requires ascending one flight of steep stairs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Lecture on Venetian history, its founding, construction and domination of the trade along the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. Venice's republic / empire lasted longer than Rome's. Her wealth from trade is manifest in the opulent buildings and churches. After the lecture, challenge other rowers on a dragon boat race with the Venice Canoe Club.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Ride the Vaporetto (public boat) to St. Mark's Square. A local expert leads the visit of the Basilica. Marvel at the mosaics decorating the walls and ceilings--over 60,000 square feet. On the second floor is the original "quadriga" a team of four gilded bronze horses that was looted from Constantinople. Replicas now stand in the elements above the entrance to the Basilica. See illuminated manuscripts and other documents related to the church.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day Twelve: Sunday, July 19 - Doge's Palace \ Peggy Guggenheim Museum
Note: A couple of flights of stairs and few opportunities to sit in the Doge's Palace.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Board Vaporetto or walk to meet the expert who will lead us through the Doge's Palace, Venice's government headquarters, decorated by Titian, Canaletto and Giorgione, just to mention a few. From the richly decorated halls of the Palazzo, walk over the Bridge of Sighs for a unique view of the canal. It is said that those who are condemned "sigh" at their last view of the sky as through the narrow passages to their prison cells. Very few ever escaped.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Having been surrounded by ancient and Renaissance masterpieces and structures, enjoy the modern art collection at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Relax in the courtyard of the palazzo on the Grand Canal while the docents introduce the life and times of the wealthy American collector. The group splits in two for the visit of the collection housed in the small rooms of the gallery. The docent leading the students elicits their reactions to the form and expression they see in the works of modern art.

Day Thirteen: Monday, July 20 - Rialto Bridge \ Artisan Workshop
Note: Leisurely walk around the Rialto Bridge area, and to an artisan's workshop.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: A local expert leads the walk around the oldest part of Venice, the Rialto Bridge. Stop at an artisan's workshop to learn about the carving techniques of making gondola oars and oar locks.

Lunch: Choose your lunch from the many offerings around the market area of the Rialto. Group leader will have suggestions.

Afternoon: Free time to explore a corner of Venice. By now you will be accustomed to the vaporetto if you want to visit the Lido or one of the other islands in the lagoon.

Dinner: Farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant. Your glass mementos will be available for you to gingerly pack.

Evening: Ride the Vaporetto to take some artistic evening photographs.

Day Fourteen: Tuesday, July 21 - Arrivederci Venezia
Note: You and your luggage transfer to the airport by water taxi. From where the taxi docks it is less than a 10 min. walk under a canopy to reach the terminal. Often luggage carts (E. 1 deposit coin) are available at the dock; the coin is refunded at the terminal.

Depart From: Transfer from the hotel to the Venice Marco Polo airport for departure.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Sack breakfast for those with early departure times.
