Note: Leisurely walk to get your Rome legs going.

Arrive To: Rome airport, transfer to hotel.

Morning: If flights arrive before rooms are ready for 2PM check-in, leave luggage at hotel and either begin exploring the area or wait in the lobby or ride the elevator to the top floor to see the roof garden view. Group Leader will be at the hotel to offer suggestions.

Day Three: Friday, July 03 - Capitoline Museum \ Mosaic Workshop \ Trevi Fount...
Note: Stairs to ascend the Capitoline Hill, stairs in the Museum. Extensive walking in the heart of Rome's pedestrian only area between the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Expert-led visit to the Capitoline Museum of Roman antiquities. See the busts of various consuls, emperors and women who figured in Roman history. See the She Wolf, symbol of Rome; the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the foundations of the most important temple--Jupiter Capitolinus; the Dying Gaul, and the Capitoline Venus. From the Tabullarium, ancient Rome's archives, there is a commanding view of the Forum. After exiting the museum, you may wish to walk up the steps behind the last gallery to reach the balcony of the Monument to Victor Emanuel II, king of Unified Italy. The large white memorial you see from your hotel. Great panoramic views of the city.

Lunch: Coach to the Mosaic School. Lunch at the studio art café.

Afternoon: Come to appreciate the art form of mosaics as you participate in creating your own mosaic with instructors at a local art school. Keep your decorated piece as a memento.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Enjoy a stroll to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. The Trevi Fountain is dry and under scaffolding as it is being cleaned and restored, but city has set up a small pool for the traditional coin toss.

Day Four: Saturday, July 04 - Vatican Museums \ Sistine Chapel \ S. Peter's Bas...
Note: Expect crowds at the Vatican Museums. Walk a few flights of stairs to visit the various galleries and art filled rooms. Steps along the path to the Sistine Chapel.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: A presentation on the artistry of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican Museums. Transfer to the Vatican.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Reserved entrance time for the Vatican Museums. Meet the local expert who will lead you through this museum comprised of a number of collections. You will learn about singular pieces, such as the Laocoon; Apollo Belvedere. Visit the rooms by Raphael including the "School of Athens", and of course, the Sistine Chapel. The visit continues to the "new" S. Peter's Basilica (only 500 years old) to see Michelangelo's Pieta' and works by Bernini.Once inside S. Peter's Basilica, you will learn that all "paintings" are actually micro-mosaics and that mosaics decorate much of the interior. Coach to the hotel.

Day Five: Sunday, July 05 - Piazza Navona and the Pantheon \ Patrician Palace
Note: Extensive walking in the heart of Rome's pedestrian only area around Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Steps to reach ground floor of underground house.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Explore Piazza Navona with a local expert who will discuss how an ancient stadium of Domitian (81-96) was transformed into the quintessential Baroque piazza, at the center of which is Bernini's famous Fountain of the Four Rivers. Pass on toward the Pantheon, one of the best preserved Ancient Roman buildings.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: In the lower levels of the Palazzo Valentini, excavations reveal the ruins of ancient Roman houses. A multimedia presentation brings the 2,000 year old ruins to life.

Day Six: Monday, July 06 - Roman Forum \ Colosseum \ Train to Florence
Note: Walk through the Forum is on original cobble paving stones, uneven dirt path, a gentle incline. For an authentic experience at the Colosseum, climb the 4 flights of steep stairs to the top level. There is an elevator at one end of the Colosseum for the truly needy. If you take the elevator down, you will have to retrace your steps to reach the exit at the opposite end. Leisurely walk from train station in Florence to hotel

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Have checked luggage ready for van transfer to the hotel in Florence. Leave hand luggage in the hotel deposit area. Reserved entrance for expert-led visit to the Forum, Rome's ancient religious and civic downtown--walk along the Via Sacra, starting point for "all roads lead to Rome" and where triumphal processions passed. The expert will try to paint a picture of the walls and images of the activities that took place in the remains of the buildings (basilicas). See remains of the temple built over the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated. Continue to the Flavian Amphitheater, commonly known as the Colosseum, capable seating up to 50,000 people and imagine watching gladiatorial games and the pageantry.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Return to hotel to pick up hand luggage and transfer to Termini Station to experience travel on a high speed train at speeds reaching 120 mph. Arrive in Florence 95 minutes after departure. Check into hotel, and avail yourself of the roof garden pool to cool off. Meet at the appointed time for a neighborhood walk.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Excursion of the historical section of Florence to orient everyone on the layout of the city, locate landmarks, find ATM's and pharmacies.

Day Seven: Tuesday, July 07 - Fresco Workshop \ History of Florence
Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Learn from an art teacher the steps required to paint using the fresco technique; from creating the lines with a sack of coal dust, to spreading the fresh plaster and mixing the pigments. After the 6" x 9" tile dries, you may choose to keep it, otherwise it is recycled. Expert-led visit of Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's city hall, to see original pieces of art, including Donatello's Judith and Holofernes and sculptures by Michelangelo. See Machiavelli's study when he was Secretary of State for the Republic.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: A local expert gives some background of the city of Florence and the region of Tuscany. Some free time to explore Florence at your own pace.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day Eight: Wednesday, July 08 - Renaissance Art \ Galileo Museum \ Uffizi Gallery
Note: The Uffizi Gallery visit requires climbing 3 flights of stairs. There is a small elevator for the truly needy.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: An illustrated presentation by an art historian on the masterpieces you will see in the Uffizi Gallery. At the conclusion and a short break, set off to the learn about the scientific revolution in the Museum of Science. See Galileo's telescope which aided in his studies of celestial orbits. The docent will talk about the wooden conceptual models of the planets and their orbits, some 10 feet tall, which were used to argue whether the solar system was geocentric or heliocentric. Surgeons will see early instruments and notice quite a similarity between early and present day versions. Many interactive exhibits.

Lunch: Select your eatery. Group leader will have suggestions for places to eat.

Afternoon: For the self guided visit we will enter the Uffizi as a group, but you are free to spend as much time as you wish. This museum holds a most extensive collection of art, tracing the development from Gothic to medieval to Renaissance to Mannerist paintings. You will find many recognizable masterpieces, including DaVinci's Annunciation, Botticelli's Birth of Venus and the Primavera, some Titians, Michelangelo's Holy Family, and a few Caravaggios as well as Artemisia Gentileschi. There is a coffee bar at the end of the second corridor, on top of the Loggia, with a wonderful view of the watch tower and Duomo where you can get some refreshment and rest.

Day Nine: Thursday, July 09 - Renaissance Frescoes \ San Lorenzo \ Michelangelo...
Note: Narrow sidewalks along the way to the Accademia delle Belle Arti.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: With your new found knowledge of fresco painting, an expert expounds on the frescoes by Masaccio and Ghirlandaio found in the church of Santa Maria Novella. Visit continues to San Lorenzo, parish church of the Medici family. The plain brick facade belies the harmonious beauty of its interior. Explore the Market of San Lorenzo, where vendors with carts sell Florentine leather goods, souvenirs, textiles and T shirts. In the steel building are fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh and cured meats and cheeses as well as a food court (open until late in the evening) with farm to table offerings.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Reserved entrance to the Accademia Museum to admire Michelangelo's David and other marble sculptures. Some free time.

Day Ten: Friday, July 10 - Train to Venice \ Glass Bead Session \ Murano
Note: Walk to S. M. Novella train station for high speed train to Venice. Board Vaporetto, Venice's public transportation system of vessels, pass provided for duration. The boats are often crowded, use your elbows if you need to get on.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Luggage transported to Venice hotel by van. On the train you will carry only your hand bag, tote, or day pack. Arrive in Venice, board vaporetto, Venice's public transportation boat to the stop nearest the hotel. Deposit hand luggage, as the rooms are not yet ready.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Ride the vaporetto to the island of Murano. Learn about glass making and create your own glass tile decoration under the supervision of an instructor at a working glass school. The tile dish you create will be fused the in the kiln and once cured overnight. It will be delivered to you prior to departure. vaporetto to the Accademia, the stop closest to the hotel.

Dinner: At a local restaurant to savor Venetian cuisine.

Day Eleven: Saturday, July 11 - Venetian History \ S. Mark's Basilica
Note: St. Mark's museum requires ascending one flight of steep stairs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Lecture on Venetian history, its founding, construction and domination of the trade along the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. Venice's republic / empire lasted longer than Rome's. Her wealth from trade is manifest in the opulent buildings and churches.

Lunch: Lunch on your own.

Afternoon: Ride the vaporetto to St. Mark's Square. A local expert leads the visit of the Basilica. Marvel at the mosaics decorating the walls and ceilings--over 60,000 square feet. On the second floor is the original "quadriga" a team of four gilded bronze horses that was looted from Constantinople. Replicas now stand in the elements above the entrance to the Basilica. See illuminated manuscripts and other documents related to the church.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day Twelve: Sunday, July 12 - Dragon Boat Lesson \ Doge's Palace
Note: Row, row, row your dragon boat hard if you want to win; otherwise sit at the stern and enjoy the ride.Two flights of stairs to reach the upper floors of the Doge's Palace. Narrow passages through the rooms of the Prisons and over the Bridge of Sighs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Team up with the Venetian Crew Club for a dragon boat lesson and race along the canal.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Return to St. Mark's Square to meet the expert who will lead us through the Doge's Palace, Venice's government headquarters, decorated by Titian, Canaletto and Giorgione, just to mention a few. From the richly decorated halls of the Palazzo, walk over the Bridge of Sighs for a unique view of the canal. It is said that those who are condemned "sigh" at their last view of the sky as through the narrow passages to their prison cells. Very few ever escaped.

Day Thirteen: Monday, July 13 - Rialto Bridge \ Artisan Workshop \ Modern Art at ...
Rialto Bridge \ Artisan Workshop \ Modern Art at the Guggenheim Collection

Note: Leisurely walk around the Rialto Bridge area, and to an artisan's workshop.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: A local expert leads the walk around the oldest part of Venice, the Rialto district, and its famous bridge. Stop at an artisan's workshop to learn about the carving techniques of making gondola oars and oar locks.

Lunch: Choose your lunch from the many offerings around the market area of the Rialto. Group leader will have suggestions.

Afternoon: Having been surrounded by ancient and Renaissance masterpieces and structures, enjoy the modern art collection at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Relax in the courtyard of the palazzo on the Grand Canal while the docents introduce the life and times of the wealthy American collector. The group splits in two for the visit of the collection housed in the small rooms of the gallery. The docent leading the students elicits their reactions to the form and expression they see in the works of modern art.

Dinner: Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day Fourteen: Tuesday, July 14 - Arrivederci Venezia
Note: You and your luggage transfer to the airport by water taxi. From where the taxi docks it is less than a 10 min. walk under a canopy to reach the terminal. Often luggage carts (E. 1 deposit coin) are available at the dock; the coin is refunded at the terminal.

Depart From: Transfer from the hotel to the Venice Marco Polo airport for departure.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Sack breakfast for those with early departure times.
