Morning: Course one: Examine the origins and pre-contact of the Cherokee Indians with Lee Knight. Course two: Take a look at Scotland as a nation from beginnings to modern day.

Lunch: Lunch served in Hotel dining room

Afternoon: Who were the Southern Mountaineers and where did they come from? The Scots-Irish brought very little in material wealth as they settled into the highlands of the Southern Appalachians but they brought a cultural treasure of music, dance, story and song that is timeless. You will hear some of these treasures today as you come to understand the life and times of our southern mountain pioneers.

Breakfast: Breakfast served in hotel dining room

Morning: Course one: Settlers of the British Isles; Celts: their language, culture and religion. Course two: As you listen to and join in singing some of the lyric folk songs of the mountains you will come to understand what an integral part of life, experience and emotional expression this music was. Take part in the music by learning to play a few simple songs on the mountain dulcimer.

Lunch: Lunch served in hotel dining room

Afternoon: Field trip to the Cherokee Museum

Dinner: Dinner served in hotel dining room

Evening: Enjoy a movie.

Morning: Course one: Probe the coming of the Europeans, Spanish, French, English, and Scotch-Irish and their impact on Cherokee life. Course two: Explore Religion in Scotland through the Reformation and 1700's.

Afternoon: Free Afternoon to explore the area.

Dinner: Dinner served in hotel dining room

Evening: The most important body of song brought with the early settlers of the mountains and still so beautifully preserved, is the ancient ballads. They are history and literature combined and tell the stories of kings, queens, noblemen, battles, farmers, outlaws, natural disasters and the news in general. Hear a sampling of these today.

Day Five: Thursday, September 17 - Morning and afternoon courses with evening entert...

Morning: Course one: Investigate the events leading up to the Cherokee removal 1700-1838. Course two: Examine politics in Scotland through the 1700's.

Lunch: Lunch served in hotel dining room

Afternoon: Today will be light hearted and fun with courting and humorous songs. Learn more about the dance and play-party tradition of the mountains and enjoy participating in a simple dance or two. We will end our week with an overview of the religious experience and musical expression of the mountains. Congregational singing was a vital part of worship, and gave rise to many powerful and beautiful sacred folk songs as well as the spread of the shaped note tradition and singing schools. The Camp Meeting Revival songs contributed further energy into sacred song and contributed to the development of the Negro Spiritual.
