Day Two: Friday, May 01 - Mozart’s Viennese Operas / 20th Century Music in ...
Breakfast: In the hotel restaurant, the tasty breakfast buffet offers scrambled eggs, smoked bacon and grilled sausages, breakfast potatoes, oatmeal and cold cereals including granola, yogurts, fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese, assorted breads and pastries, milk, juices, coffee, assorted teas, water.

Morning: Mozart's Viennese Operas. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spent the last decade of his life in the music capital of 18th century Europe, Vienna. During this period he created some of the world’s greatest and most beloved works for the opera stage. Mozart’s operas during his Viennese period reveal keys to his life as well as a golden era in world culture. In our first class, we’ll have an introduction to styles of opera in the 18th century, major opera centers, important opera composers and focus in particular on “The Abduction from the Seraglio” (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) and “The Marriage of Figaro” (Le nozze di Figaro).

Lunch: In the hotel, our lunch buffet offers salad, an entrée, meats and breads for making sandwiches, fresh vegetables, dessert, and beverage choices including tea (iced or hot) and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: Our next class on Mozart’s Viennese operas takes a close look at “Così fan tutte” (The School for Lovers), “Don Giovanni,” and “Die Zauberflöte” (The Magic Flute).

After a break, we’ll regroup for a class on 20th Century Music in America, Part 1. Music in the 20th century, like the rest of life, changed so rapidly and so radically from what went before that it is impossible to define as we do with the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras. Through audio, video, and live performance, we will examine some of the many different genres and styles that developed in the U.S. during the 20th century until around World War II, from the influence of Debussy and Ravel in particular on Gershwin and other American composers; “nationalism” in the works of Ives and Copland, who incorporated folk music into their compositions.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: 20th Century American Music, Part 2. Continuing our investigation, we will take a chronological approach paralleling classical and popular music and artists who changed their art form. In this class, we’ll consider the second half of the century and take a look and listen at Bessie Smith, Ellington, Armstrong, Bernstein, Partch, Miles Davis, Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Grandmaster Flash & Kool DJ. 2

Day Three: Saturday, May 02 - Music of Bach and Beethoven, Swing, Big Band & Ja...
Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Music of Bach. Universally considered the finest composer of his time, Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the great music icons of world history. A master of every genre of the late-Baroque era with the exception of opera, Bach created some of the most enduring masterpieces of the classical music repertoire. Discussions will focus on the development of Bach’s music in relation to the chronology of his life.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: Music of Beethoven. The shadow of Ludwig van Beethoven was so intimidating to composers of the early 19th century that new genres of music were developed to avoid comparison to his symphonies, sonatas, and string quartets. No other composer in the history of western music has had this effect on the next generation, and the power and mastery of Beethoven’s music continues to enthrall us today. An examination of his music in relation to his life and time will enhance the understanding of Beethoven as a person and as an artist who changed the course of the history of his art form.

Swing, Big Band & Jazz, Part 1. The music that got us on our feet was called jazz, big band, swing. Hear the artists who made jazz memorable: Louis Armstrong, Al Jolson, Sophie Tucker, Benny Goodman, and more.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: Swing, Big Band & Jazz, Part 2: Big Bands ruled the 1930s and 1940s. We’ll learn about and hear music of Artie Shaw, Glen Miller, The Dorseys, and some of the singers that fronted their bands, including Billie Holiday, Dinah Shore, and Frank Sinatra.

Day Four: Sunday, May 03 - Musical Entertainment / The Magic Flute
Note: Note: Bus ride to/from San Jose is approximately one hour. The opera performance is three hours including two intermissions.

Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Enjoy the musical talents of Mark Levy, who will put everyone in a festive mood. Mark, who sings and plays guitar, is a Road Scholar favorite.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: Performance: Mozart, “The Magic Flute” by Opera San Jose, sung in German with English supertitles. The opera’s seemingly nonsensical libretto was written by Emanuel Schikaneder, a friend of Mozart and a member of the same Masonic lodge. The fairy tale story about a quest for enlightenment, honor, and the power of love overlays deeper meanings and symbolism. Regardless of its inspiration and interpretations, Mozart’s brilliant score — one of his finest creations — transforms the fantastical into the immortal. The first performance took place in Vienna just two months before his death.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: At leisure. You might like to go out on your own, enjoy the hotel’s amenities, socialize with new Road Scholar friends, or just relax.
