Day Two: Friday, May 22 - Great Jewish Comedians Part 1 / Men, Women & Come...
Great Jewish Comedians Part 1 / Men, Women & Comedy / Stand-up Tonight!

Breakfast: In the hotel restaurant, the tasty breakfast buffet offers scrambled eggs, smoked bacon and grilled sausages, breakfast potatoes, oatmeal and cold cereals including granola, yogurts, fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese, assorted breads and pastries, milk, juices, coffee, assorted teas, water.

Morning: So you think that’s funny? Although Jews make up less than 3% of the general population, Jewish funny men and women have had an extraordinary influence on American comedy and by some estimates comprise nearly two-thirds of working comedians. Is there a distinctively Jewish humor? In Part 1 of Great Jewish Comedians, we’ll take a look at early immigrant humor mostly for Jewish audiences, in-crowd jokes including Yiddish from early 20th century vaudeville to radio, film, and on to the Borscht Belt. Some of the standouts are Smith and Dale, Emil Cohen, Mayer Zaremba, Myron Cohen, Lou Jacoby, Betty Walker, Mickey Katz.

Lunch: In the hotel, our lunch buffet offers salad, an entrée, meats and breads for making sandwiches, fresh vegetables, dessert, and beverage choices including tea (iced or hot) and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: Men, Women & Comedy. Take my wife…please! As Henny Youngman’s famous line shows, it’s a common theory of comedy that we use humor to deflate anxiety, tension, or anger in relationships. (Thank you, Dr. Freud.) With our instructor who is a solo theater artist — also a playwright, humorist, and juggler in addition to being a teacher — we we’ll take a comedic look at the longest running war in history: the battle of the sexes. It was fodder for Aristophanes and others thousands of years ago who were cracking up audiences with gender-based comedy. Learn why comedy has tended to be dominated by men, differences between “women’s” humor and “men’s” humor, what changes when a man or a woman tell the same joke, gay/lesbian/bi/trans influences, and how that long-running battle continues to play out in comedy. With audio and video examples plus lots of jokes, it will lively, occasionally provocative, fun.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: Stand-up Tonight! We’re joined by a hit Bay Area professional for real, live stand-up comedy just for us.

San Francisco Highlights / Great Jewish Comedians Part 2 / Stand-up Tonight!

Note: Note: San Francisco excursion four hours total on the motorcoach.

Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: We’ll be joined by a local expert for a San Francisco city excursion via private motorcoach. Our expert will provide commentary, pointing out highlights and giving the history of the “City by the Bay” with photo stops and rest stops along the way.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: Great Jewish Comedians, Part 2. Then they began assimilating (“fitting in”) with humor and comedy aimed at a mainstream American audience without references to anything specifically Jewish. Some comedians changed their names for radio, film, and stage to wider acceptance in the non-Jewish world. Here are just a few: Mendel Berlinger, Nathan Birnbaum, Leonard Hacker, Murray Janowsky, and Benjamin Kubeksly. Comedians certainly weren’t the only ones. Bernard Schwartz had a pretty decent movie career as Tony Curtis!

Day Five: Monday, May 25 - Great Jewish Comedians Part 3 / Free Afternoon / ...
Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Great Jewish Comedians, Part 3. Jews‘R’Us! After World War II and continuing to the present, undisguised Jewish humor was out there for public consumption across all media. It was still comedy aimed at the general mainstream American audience, but with explicitly Jewish references, sometimes from the comedian’s own experience as a Jew in the non-Jewish world. These comedians not only feel comfortable to be “out” as Jews, but lace their material with very Jewish material that the wider audience now “gets.” Members of this generation include Woody Allen, Roseanne Barr, Lewis Black, Mel Brooks, Lenny Bruce, Billy Crystal, Gilbert Gottfried, Robert Klein, Jackie Mason, Gilda Radner, Joan Rivers, and Gary Shandling.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: Free Afternoon. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: Stand-up Tonight! Another Bay Area professional entertains us with real, live stand-up comedy.
