Program Registration: 3:30-4:30 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table (located either right outside of the Road Scholar meeting room or right inside) and pick up your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule, and other important information we will review during Orientation, and to confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet at the front desk when you check in.
Orientation: 4:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet you with a warm welcome and introduce everyone. We will review the up-to-date daily program schedule and any changes, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have.
During free time, the Group Leader will be available to guide informal excursions, activities, or meals not included in the program. You are welcome to join if you wish, with any associated costs (if any) on your own, or explore independently.

Menus are arranged in advance for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants. This program offers the following choices for meals: standard, gluten-free, low fat, low salt and vegetarian. We are happy to accommodate the varying dietary needs of our group. These special meal requests should be written on your Participant Information Form and must be received at least 3 weeks prior to the start date of your program.

Learn about this dark classic, made famous by film. Hammett's adult life consisted of writing, poverty, alcoholism, womanizing, smoking, and bad health. Despite all of that, he wrote detective stories that changed the nature of detective fiction. Find out how in this talk that will focus on "Red Harvest" (called one of the 100 best novels in English since 1923) and "The Maltese Falcon," the latter set in San Francisco.
"Shirley Jackson, Daughter of Burlingame
Shirley Jackson is best known for her shocking short story, "The Lottery," with a surprise ending for the "winner" of the lottery. Learn about her early life and how she portrayed Burlingame in her novel, "The Road Through the Wall." Learn all about the famous author whose book "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was equally popular as a film. Gain knowledge about the local hospital on which the story was based as well as receive an in-depth analysis of the book. The class will conclude with information about a subsequent novel, also filmed, "Sometimes a Great Notion."
The Early Novels of Frank Norris
Study the father of American Naturalism, Frank Norris, who spent much of his short adult life in San Francisco. This lecture will show his two very different styles, with an emphasis on the definition of Naturalism and its applicability to the book "McTeague: A Story of San Francisco" that was famously filmed by Erich von Stroheim under the title, "Greed."
Late Afternoon: Jazz & the Pop Song

The Legion of Honor displays an impressive collection of 4,000 years of ancient and European art. Built to commemorate Californian soldiers who died in World War I, the Legion of Honor is a beautiful Beaux-arts building overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Bridge, and San Francisco. Its collections include Rodin's Thinker, European decorative arts, and paintings and ancient art.

Sadly, they really don't make them like that anymore, so we'll celebrate the ones they did make. The centerpiece and most popular element of most symphonic concerts is the concerto, which allows the audience to experience the virtuoso talents of one of more soloists. From humble beginnings in the early 17th century, the concerto grew into a solo extravaganza by the end of the 18th century. From George Washington to Barack Obama, the inaugural addresses tell a fascinating story of our presidents
and the times in which they lived. During this class we will revisit their words, consider the moments at which they were spoken, and rank the speaker’s place in the pantheon of presidents.

The Aviation Museum located in the international terminal at SFO. The museum is an architectural adaptation of the airport's 1930s passenger lobby. The collection focuses on air transport with an emphasis on the West Coast and the Pacific region. Free admission. Take the airport shuttle which departs the hotel every 20 minutes.
Explore downtown Burlingame. Take the complimentary shuttle to downtown Burlingame to peruse the interesting shops, restaurants, historic train depot and library. Shuttle schedule available at lobby desk. Explore the Burlingame Museum of Pez Memorabilia/Classic Toy Museum/Banned Toy Museum—214 California Drive; 650-347-2301; guided visits daily take 45 minutes.
