This conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union never quite became a hot or actual war because both sides feared the consequences of a nuclear exchange, an exchange that no side could really win. So these two superpowers fought for power, influence and prestige around the globe in other ways. They fought hot wars thru surrogate powers in Korea, Cuba and Vietnam. They also competed for influence through propaganda, foreign aid and espionage across the globe. And then, quite suddenly, the conflict came to an end in Eastern Europe with the collapse of communist governments in 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. What was behind the rise of this global rivalry between the communist and non-communist nations? Why did this conflict appear to be endless? What happened in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and the U.S. in the 1980's which rather abruptly ended the Cold War? Is a new Cold War re-emerging between Russia and the West? Between China and the U.S. and its Asian allies? We will try to address each of these questions in our short course on the Cold War.Lunch: Enjoy a lunch buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary hot and iced tea.Afternoon: Early Afternoon: The Cold War: 1946-1989, Part 2
Late Afternoon: Piano Music of the Romantic Era
No other instrument better exemplifies the Romantic era in music than the piano. More than a century after the fact, the music composed for the piano throughout the 19th century remains the staple for performers and audience members alike. No other classical music is more dearly loved. Piano masterpieces by Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, Debussy, and others will engage, enrich and entertain participants.Dinner: Enjoy a dinner buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary coffee and hot tea.Evening: Piano Music of the Romantic Era, Part 2Lodging: Hilton SFO BayfrontMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lunch: Enjoy a plated 3-course lunch in the hotel which includes complimentary hot and iced tea.Afternoon: Great American Free Speech Cases
Speech is the realm of human activity between thought and physical acts, distinct from yet overlapping with both. It is also one of the most highly protected of American constitutional liberties. In this course, we shall examine about two dozen of the Supreme Court’s greatest, most interesting free speech cases. Following an overview of the history of free speech law, stretching to antiquity, we consider leading U.S. cases that have developed major doctrines setting the limits of speech protection under the First Amendment. Beginning with incitement to imminent lawlessness (and its early articulation as the clear and present danger rule), we go on to consider landmark cases on offensive speech, defamation, commercial speech, obscenity, the public forum, and time/place/manner restrictions. Those who take this course will gain a respectable command of the complex, fascinating landscape of the American law of free speech.Dinner: Enjoy a dinner buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary coffee and hot tea.Evening: Great American Free Speech Cases, Part 2Lodging: Hilton SFO BayfrontMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
During the tense years of the Cold War from 1953 to 1979, the United States Army built and operated close to 300 Nike missile firing batteries in the United States. These missile sites were emplaced as the last line of defense against Soviet bombers. This historical resource is the only restored Nike missile site in the country. It's a great chance for you to see the tools of the Cold War up close.
