We will explore why the Civil War remains one of the pivotal events in American history. America after the war became a profoundly different America - an America free of slavery, an America dominated by the industrial North, an America expanding in the West and an America starting to project its power into the outside world. Our overview of this epochal conflict will consist of five parts: the causes of the war, how and why the war became a long, drawn out conflict, the battles and actions which turned the tide of war against the Confederacy after 1863, why the Confederacy finally surrendered in April, 1865 and finally, why the consequences of the Civil War live on to this day.Lunch: Enjoy a lunch buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary hot and iced tea.Afternoon: Early Afternoon: The Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, Part 2
Late Afternoon: The Music of Beethoven
The shadow of Ludwig van Beethoven was so intimidating to composers of the early 19th century that new genres of music were developed to avoid comparison to his symphonies, sonatas, and string quartets. No other composer in the history of western music has had this effect on the next generation, and the power and mastery of Beethoven’s music continues to enthrall us today. An examination of his music in relation to his life and time will enhance the understanding of Beethoven as a person and as an artist who changed the course of the history of his art form.Dinner: Enjoy a dinner buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary coffee and hot tea.Evening: Music of Bach
Universally considered the finest composer of his time, Johan Sebastian Bach is one of the great music icons of world history. A master of every genre of the late-Baroque era with the exception of opera, Bach created some of the most enduring masterpieces of the classical music repertoire. Discussions will focus on the development of Bach’s music in relation to the chronology of his life.Lodging: Hilton SFO BayfrontMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
