Day Two: Friday, April 24 - Music of Bach, Music of Beethoven, American Civil...
Breakfast: In the hotel restaurant, the tasty breakfast buffet offers scrambled eggs, smoked bacon and grilled sausages, breakfast potatoes, oatmeal and cold cereals including granola, yogurts, fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese, assorted breads and pastries, milk, juices, coffee, assorted teas, water.

Morning: Music of Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the great music icons of world history. A master of every genre of the late-Baroque era with the exception of opera, Bach created some of the most enduring masterpieces of the classical music repertoire. Our expert-led discussions will focus on the development of Bach’s music in relation to the chronology of his life.

Lunch: In the hotel, our lunch buffet offers salad, an entrée, meats and breads for making sandwiches, fresh vegetables, dessert, and beverage choices including tea (iced or hot) and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: After lunch, Music of Beethoven. The shadow of Ludwig van Beethoven was so intimidating to composers of the early 19th century that new genres of music were developed to avoid comparison to his symphonies, sonatas, and string quartets. No other composer in the history of western music has had this effect on the next generation, and the power and mastery of Beethoven’s music continues to enthrall us today. An examination of his music in relation to his life and time will enhance the understanding of Beethoven as a person and as an artist who changed the course of the history of his art form.

After an extended break, The Civil War, Part 1. Most historians consider the Civil War to be the central, defining experience of the American people. Events which precipitated the conflict, and four bloody years of strife that took more than 620,000 lives, shaped and directed the American psyche in ways we are still attempting to assimilate. We will attempt to describe and clarify major cultural and political currents that split the nation in 1861, and summarize key decisions that structured the course of the war.

In Part 1, we will trace economic, political, and social conditions that drove our countrymen into bitterly divided camps during the period of 1820-1860. We will see how North and South developed radically different economic patterns that in turn drove them to adopt diametrically opposed constitutional and legal standpoints. We will focus in particular on the rise “King Cotton” and its reliance on slavery, which became the single most divisive force in the decades preceding the war. We will also delineate the relative weight of slavery versus states’ rights as the primary cause of the Civil War.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: The Civil War, Part 2. Concentrating on the war itself, we will examine the grand strategies the antagonists developed during the first months of the war, and how the early optimistic predictions of an easy victory — which both the Union and the Confederacy fantasized — gave way to the grim reality of total war. We will focus on what was then Lincoln’s highly controversial decision to emancipate the slaves and arm them against their previous masters. We will also analyze the characters and policies of key military leaders of both North and South, and evaluate their performances. Delving into the minds of common soldiers, we will try to understand why they were willing to make such extraordinary sacrifices for their respective causes. Lastly, we will consider some thoughts about the aftermath of the war. The Reconstruction Era is one of our great national tragedies: a missed opportunity for which we are still paying.

“Rosie the Riveter” World War II Home Front National Historical Park, America’s First Ladies

Note: Note: Field trip via bus to/from Richmond, across the bay from San Francisco, is 4 hours.

Breakfast: In the hotel.

Morning: Rosie the Riveter. World War II touched virtually every aspect of life on the home front, from industrial mobilization and major changes in production techniques to the role of women in labor, and so much more. The war changed America and Americans in ways large and small forever. Led by a local expert, we’ll take a field trip via bus to the aptly named Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California. Why was Richmond chosen? More than 50 different war industries were based here and numerous surviving sites and structures help to illustrate the contributions and sacrifices, triumphs and tragedies of the civilian population. En route to the park, a local expert will set the stage for our exploration and we’ll learn how Rosie the Riveter became the symbol of American women working in factories. We’ll then see what was once the Ford Assembly Plant , once the largest on the West Coast; the SS “Red Oak” Victory Ship; the Rosie the Riveter Visitor Education Center, where a park ranger will greet and lead us and introduce a documentary film, “The War at Home.” We’ll also have a ranger-led introduction to the Center’s exhibits, followed by some free time for independent exploration.

Lunch: In the hotel.

Afternoon: America's First Ladies, Part 1. From Martha to Michelle, a political science expert will enlighten us on the 44 women behind the 44 men (so far!) who have served as President of the United States. Among the notables in Part 1 are Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Mary Lincoln, Ida McKinley, Edith Roosevelt, Ellen Wilson, Florence Harding, Lou Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower.

Dinner: In the hotel.

Evening: America's First Ladies, Part 2. Our lively discussion of America's First Ladies continues as we learn about Jackie Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama.
