Join us on a pictorial tour of iconic world’s fairs and expositions, from the groundbreaking 1851 Crystal Exhibition in Victorian London to the futuristic New York World’s Fair of 1939-1940. Landmarks in industrialization, empire building, nation branding, and the global exchange of culture, commerce, and social Darwinism, worlds fairs commemorated historical events and birthed new forms of art and architecture, technology and emigration at Philadelphia (1876), Paris (1889), Chicago (1892-93), St. Louis (1904) as well as San Francisco (1893, 1915 and 1939). These "temporary" exhibitions produced such engineering feats as the Eiffel Tower, original Ferris Wheel, and San Francisco’s Treasure Island, and popularized such American standards as the carnival “Midway,” hot dogs, cotton candy and ragtime music.Dinner: Enjoy a dinner buffet in the hotel which includes complimentary coffee and hot tea.Evening: All the World’s Affair: International Expositions, 1851-1940, Part 2Lodging: Hilton SFO BayfrontMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Weimar Germany has long held our fascination as a laboratory of cultural innovation: its music, literature, films, graphic arts and architecture continue to resonate even today. Yet the brief “Weimar Republic” (1918-1933) was also a time of economic chaos, social suffering, and chronic political instability marked above all by the rise and ultimate triumph of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi movement. This course offers a comprehensive re-examination of a moment critical not only for the history of Germany, but for the modern world.
