Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.
Orientation: Begins before dinner. We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, any other administrative issues, and answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. Menus are arranged in advance for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants. This program offers the following choices for meals: standard, gluten-free, low fat, low salt, and vegetarian. We are happy to accommodate the varying dietary needs of our group. Afternoon: Enjoy a private, docent-led walk of the permanent exhibits of the Ahmanson Building, the original building of the museum complex. Afterwards, explore the museum and grounds on your own or join a public tour.Dinner: Buffet-style dinner at the hotel including coffee, hot and iced tea, and ice water.Evening: Presentation: DVD: 'Concert of Wills: Making the Getty Center' traces the building of the Getty Center, one of the most ambitious cultural undertakings of the 20th century. The history of Los Angeles, one of the oldest cities in the United States, begins with its founding by the Spanish government as a town in 1781, eight years before George Washington became the first president of the United States and 22 years before the Louisiana Purchase.
A successful farming community under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States, Los Angeles grew to become the second largest city in the United States. While the session discusses the basic facts of the city's founding and growth, the emphasis is on the reasons and motivations that created the present city.Lodging: The L.A. Enjoy a private docent-led walk of the Norton Simon Museum. You will have time to explore the collections and the sculpture garden on your own.
