Early History of Tucson Area/Mission San Xavier del Bac/Evening Entertainment

Note: Walking up to one mile over paved and packed dirt terrain, standing up to 1 hour at a time

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: This morning we'll learn about the prehistory and history of the area, from its archeology to the development of modern-day Tucson.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll board our coach and depart for a driving exploration of Tucson. We'll then travel to Mission San Xavier del Bac.

The celebrated Jesuit missionary and explorer, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, first visited 'Bac" in 1692. Eight years later in 1700, Father Kino laid the foundations of the first church, some two miles north of the present Mission site. He named it San Xavier in honor of his chosen patron, St. Francis Xavier, the illustrious Jesuit "Apostle of the Indies."

In 1768, Fray Francisco Hermengildo Garces, a man of outstanding personality and prodigious accomplishments among missionaries to the area, established his headquarters at San Xavier. From here, this Franciscan Friar set forth on his many missionary explorations.

We'll return to the hotel by 5:00 PM.

Evening: This evening, we'll be treated to a performance by a well-known country and Western guitarist/vocalist.

Day Three: Wednesday, January 28 - Tucson Bus Exploration/Arizona State Museum/Stewa...
Note: Walking up to a mile over course of day over even, paved terrain. Standing up to an hour at Mirror Lab

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: After breakfast, we'll learn more about the "Wild West" and Tucson's history.

We'll then depart for a field trip to the Arizona State Museum, an anthropology museum focusing on the indigenous cultures of Arizona and northern Mexico.

Lunch: Lunch at a selected restaurant

Afternoon: This afternoon we'll visit the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab, where a team of scientists and engineers is making giant, lightweight mirrors of unprecedented power for a new generation of optical and infrared telescopes.

The Mirror Lab had its beginning in 1980; by 1985, with financial support from US Air Force, the National Science Foundation and the University of Arizona, the Lab moved to its current facility. The Lab has continued to grow and change. Powerful telescopes on Mt. Graham, Mt. Hopkins, Apache Point, Kitt Peak and other sites have mirrors with diameters ranging from 1.2 to 8.4 meters.

The Lab continues its impressive history of successful ground-breaking mirror castings. We'll explore the Lab, learn about the mirrors and how they're produced and ground, and actually observe the process.

We'll drive around the campus of the University of Arizona after we see the Mirror Lab. The campus is large, with a number of historical buildings, as well as many new and architecturally interesting sites.

The bus will return to the hotel about 5:00 PM.

Evening: This evening we'll hear about some of the many movies that have been filmed in and around Tucson.

Day Four: Thursday, January 29 - Sabino Canyon Tram Excursion/Ted DeGrazia Gallery...
Note: Walking up to a mile over the course of the day over paved, even terrain and standing for up to 1/2 hour during gallery visit

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: This morning we'll visit the gallery of the late artist, Ted DeGrazia. What started as a small construction project in the 1950s developed into a 10-acre National Historic District designed and built by DeGrazia. Visitors are treated not only to the art displayed in the gallery, but to the colorful grounds and sculptures surrounding the property.

Lunch: Lunch today will be at El Charro Café near Sabino Canyon.

Established in 1922, El Charro Café of Tucson is the nation’s oldest Mexican restaurant in continuous operation by the same family, featuring traditional Sonoran-style and innovative Tucson-style Mexican food. They have several locations thoughout Tucson.

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll visit Sabino Canyon. This extremely popular recreation area is located along Sabino Creek at the edge of Tucson, Arizona. For many who come to the Southwest, this area provides their first close encounter with the Sonoran Desert and the fascinating variety of plants and animals that make it their home. There is a self-guided Desert Nature Trail at the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center that provides an excellent way to get to know the plants that have adapted to living in this demanding environment.

On arrival, we'll take the tram excursion through the property, then have some time for independent explorations on our own.

We'll return to the hotel by 5:30 PM.

Day Five: Friday, January 30 - Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum/Old Tucson Studios
Note: Walking up to one mile over the course of the day over even paved and unpaved terrain. Standing for up to an hour at a time at museum and studios

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: We'll start out the morning with a class about the fascinating flora and fauna of the Sonora Desert, then depart for a field trip to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

The Museum is a world-renowned zoo, natural history museum, and botanical garden, all in one location. Exhibits depict the natural landscape of the Sonora Desert region so realistically that we find ourselves looking into the eyes of mountain lions, prairie dogs, Gila monsters and more! There are almost 2 miles of paths traversing 21 acres of beautiful desert with more than 300 animal species and 1,200 kinds of plants.

Lunch: Lunch at Ironwood Terraces Restaurant at the Desert Museum

Afternoon: After lunch, our coach will take us to Old Tucson Studios, a movie studio and theme park. Built in 1939 as a film set for the movie "Arizona," it has since been used for filming movies and television westerns, including "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" and "Little House on the Prairie." The main street at Old Tucson appears prominently in 1990s westerns such as "Tombstone." The Heritage Square Project, a 5,000 square-foot spread with three new streets lined with 12 new buildings was completed in 2011.

We will have an exploration of the site, learn about its history and the movies filmed there, and enjoy live-cast entertainment featuring stunt shows and shootouts.

Evening: Following dinner, we'll have our program closing and question-and-answer session.
