Day Two: Saturday, July 19 - Visit the unique Cello Music Collection at Univer...
Visit the unique Cello Music Collection at University of NC-Greensboro. Take a Journey with Jazz, with a live jazz quartet and receive behind-the-scenes insight into the music. In the evening attend the Faculty Orchestra concert.

Note: Field trips include several short walks and a minimum of stairs. As it may be warm in July in North Carolina, wear cool clothing with layers for indoor air-conditioning.

Breakfast: Enjoy a "home-cooked North Carolina” breakfast at the hotel with homemade biscuits, sausage and gravy, eggs, and stone ground local grits--or opt for the lighter fare of homemade breads, pastries, assorted fruits, cereal and yogurt.

Morning: Visit the impressive Cello Music Collections at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Collections constitute the largest single holding of cello music-related materials in the world, including music libraries of eight prodigious cellists, original compositions, transcriptions, performance scores with hand-written notations by the performer, and personal papers. The program will consist of a discussion about the procurement of the Luigi Silva Collection initiated by Elizabeth Cowling; a documentary short film, BERNARD GREENHOUSE: SONG OF THE BIRDS, by Joanna Hay Productions for the University Libraries Cello Music Collection at UNC-Greensboro, 2010; and an overview of the preservation of materials in the Cello Music Collections. In addition, receive another interactive lecture focusing on the repertoire to be performed at this evening's concert.

Lunch: Return to the O Henry for a delicious lunch of regional favorites.

Afternoon: Begin the afternoon with a session of Tai chi, led by EMF faculty. Tai chi uses breath, slow movement, and concentration to energize and relax the mind and body. Many musicians and non-musicians practice Tai chi to increase their concentration and coordination. Meet with faculty and students from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to hear a live jazz quartet. The music will be followed by a lecture that offers an exciting new perspective of this rich and cool American musical genre.

Dinner: A delicious meal will be provided by the O.Henry Hotel.

Evening: The Eastern Festival Orchestra (EMF's faculty orchestra comprised of professional musicians from around the country), an acclaimed soloist, and a renowned conductor will perform some of history's greatest works. Before the performance, attend an informative and energetic pre-concert lecture by a professor from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
