Class: Hawaii's Humpback Whales/Boat-based Whale Watch/Beach & Tide Pool Exploration

Note: Must be able to board bus and boat. Must be able to walk approximately 1/2 mile on uneven ground during coastal exploration field trip.

Morning: Orientation to Program. Depart of bus for Maalaea. Class: Hawai`i's Humpback Whales

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant in Maalaea

Afternoon: Field trip – Expert-led Whale-Watch. From Maalaea, the group will board a boat in search of humpback whales (each year northern Pacific humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to give birth and breed in Hawaii's warm ocean waters - they are present in the greatest numbers December-April). After our return from the whale watch, continue on to another site for Field Trip - Tide pools, Beaches, and Hawaii's Coastal Environment - explore Hawaii's coastal environment as you learn from local experts.

Class: Origins of Hawaii's Natural Environment & Marine Life/Visit Whalers Village Museum/Historic Lahaina Exploration on foot/Boat-based Whale Watch

Note: Must be able to board bus and boat and to walk on fairly flat ground in sunny weather averaging 80 degrees Farenheit (distance will vary as walking is primarily during free time).

Morning: Class: Origins of Hawaii's Natural Environment and Marine Life Field Trip: Visit quaint Whalers Village Museum to explore the life of an ordinary "whaleman" during Lahaina's bustling whaling town days (1825 to 1860). Continue on to Lahaina, former capitol of Hawaii, to explore and take a self-guided walking tour of Lahaina's historic buildings, art galleries and shops featuring marine-themed art, and other features.

Lunch: Lunch on your own - an opportunity to explore Lahaina's restaurants during your free time.

Afternoon: Board a 50 foot sailing catamaran to go whale watching in the Auau channel (between Maui and Lanai). The late afternoon is free to continue exploring Maui.

Afternoon: Field Trip –Maui Ocean Center- A guided tour of this aquarium which is devoted to Hawai`i's unique marine environment. Field Trip continues with class on Coral Reefs and Fishes at the Ocean Sciences Discovery Center. Next, visit the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and create your own fish-rubbing (an art form which is known as "Gyotaku" in Japan).

Note: Must be able to board bus and boat. Must be able to climb short ladder to get in and out of the water for snorkeling and be comfortable snorkeling in the ocean (flotation devices provided).

Breakfast: Continental Breakfast aboard snorkel/whale watching vessel

Morning: Field Trip: Expert-led Snorkel/Wild Dolphin/Whale watch (whales typically December – April only) - Discover why the island of Lanai has been rated as one of the top 10 snorkel and dive spots in the world as you snorkel a dazzling coral reef, home to abundant fish and sea turtles. Wild dolphins also are found off Lanai, including spinner, spotted and bottlenose dolphins, and occasional toothed whales. Sightings of humpback whales are common in winter months, especially December - April.

Morning: Class: Hawaiian Lei-making - learn about the Hawaiian lei-making tradition and string a lovely fresh flower lei for yourself or to give to someone else with a traditional Hawaiian "Aloha".

Afternoon: Free Afternoon to explore

Dinner: "Aloha" (Farewell) Sunset Luau - Wear the fresh flower lei you made this morning as Polynesian drums and dancers guide you to an open air oceanfront luau. A traditionally prepared pig, slowly roasted/steamed in an imu (traditional Hawaiian underground oven), is the centerpiece of an elaborate, multi-course feast. Dance, music and song conjure the myths and stories from throughout Polynesia into an evening of unforgettable performances culminating in a spectacular Fire Dance Finale under the stars.
