Introduction to Chicago Architecture/ Loop Walking Tour/Architectural Boat Ride

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: This morning we will begin with an expert-led presentation that will provide an introduction to architectural topics specific to Chicago. We will learn how to evaluate architecture within its historical conext, why architectural styles change and what we have to gain from experiencing architecture in Chicago throughout the next few days. Our first exploration of the city will be on foot as we explore the interior architecture of some of the Loop's most interesting architectural spaces. Themes we will explore this morning include the histry and culture of Chicago, modernist architecture, infrastructure and design psychology.

Lunch: Lunch today will be in The Walnut Room at Macys. Opened in 1907, at Marshall Fields, this was the first restaurant in a department store. This beloved dining room boasts a 17 ft. marble fountain, Austrian chandeliers and Circassian walnut paneling. Lunch choices will include selections from the original menu.

Afternoon: This afternoon, we will experience the architecture of Chicago from the perspective of the Chicago River. Chicago is famous for its spectacular skyline and is the birthplace of the skyscraper. The Chicago Fire in 1871 destroyed much of the city's commercial property, providing an opportunity for those who had the vision to merge structural steel and plate glass into vertical architectural wonders. We will gain a deeper understanding of the works of famous 19th and 20th century architects including Burnham, Jenny, Root and Sullivan and Kahn, Van der Rohe and Goldberg.
