Day Three: Sunday, October 26 - Orientation / Alto Maipo Wine Route
Breakfast: At the hotel, enjoy a buffet breakfast including fresh eggs, Chilean fruits, and a variety of breads.

Morning: Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone with a warm welcome and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date daily schedule and any changes, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have.

Please be aware that indicated times are approximate and that program activities and schedules could change due to local circumstances such as weather, traffic conditions, etc. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

During free time, the Group Leader will often be available for informal excursions, activities, or meals not included in the program. You are welcome to join if you wish, with any associated costs on your own, or may of course explore independently.

Following our Orientation session, we will board a motorcoach and embark on a field trip along the Alto Maipo Wine Route to the famed Santa Rita Winery. This historic winery in the small town of Alto Jahuel was founded in 1880 by one of the pioneering families in the field, who planted Bordeaux varietals that now produce some of Chile’s best wines. Here we will learn about the winery, the family who developed it, the wines, and more recent achievements as well as tasting two different kinds of wine.

Lunch: Today we have lunch at La Casa de Dona Paula Restaurant, a National Monument honoring the owner of the manor more than 200 years ago: Paula Jaraquemada. The menu includes an aperitif, appetizers, and a 3-course meal plus soft drink and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: Aboard our motorcoach, we transfer to the Museum of the Andes (Museum Andino), to admire its stunning private collection of indigenous art and culture of Chile.

Moving on, we arrive at Concha y Toro, Latin America’s major wine exporter. The original vineyard was established in 1883 by Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, who brought back cuttings from vineyards in Bordeaux to establish what has become one of the world’s most important wine brands. Its estates are in a variety of “terroirs” with soils and climates that promote the widest diversity of wine varieties. During our field trip, we will walk through the gardens, the park and the exterior of what was the summer residence of the Concha y Toro family towards the end of the 19th Century. We will also see and learn about where the Grape Variety Garden with 26 varieties and the Old Pirque vineyard. From the vineyard’s terraces, enjoy a panoramic view of the Maipo Valley, then visit the cellars for a wine tasting. The story that the cellar was inhabited by a ghost inspired development of the lengendary Casillero del Diablo brand.

Dinner: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Evening: At leisure.

Day Six: Wednesday, October 29 - Puerto Montt: Puerto Varas, Frutillar and Puerto ...
Note: This is a tender port where a smaller boat ferries passengers from the ship to shore and back. Disembarking and reboarding via steep gangways and steps.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Taking the tender to shore, we board our motorcoach and ride through lush countryside dotted with weathered clapboard barns and churches to Frutillar. This charming German-style village is on Lake Llanquihue, South America's third-largest natural lake.

At the Museo Colonial Alemán (German Colonial Museum), a local expert provides insights into the lives of settlers who colonized the area.

Next, we drive to Puerto Octay. The name comes from an early colonist, Ochs, who owned a grocery store. When people wanted to buy something they said: "Donde Ochs hay" (at Ochs, they have it), which devolved into "Octay.” See richly diverse architecture with a unique wood style, an historical reflection of the colonization process in the mid-19th century.

Lunch: At a restaurant in town, enjoy empanadas, soup, a main dish with vegetables, and dessert plus coffee or tea.

Afternoon: Returning via our motorcoach, we review the next day’s activities en route and expect to be back aboard ship by approximately 4:00 p.m. for scheduled departure from port at 5:00 p.m.

Dinner: Aboard ship.

Evening: At leisure.

Day Ten: Sunday, November 02 - Punta Arenas / Otway Sound / Penguin Reserve
Note: This is a tender port where a smaller boat ferries passengers from the ship to shore and back; disembarking and reboarding via steep gangways and steps. At Otway Sound, hike for about 2 miles (round trip) across grassland with sandy areas to the penguin rookery. Sturdy walking shoes, windbreaker, scarf recommended.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Disembarking the ship and boarding our motorcoach, we journey into the Patagonian countryside to Otway Sound. The characteristic low shrubs offer just enough camouflage for guanacos and rheas (South American ostrich).

Upon arrival at Otway Sound, we hike about a mile across grassland with sandy areas to the penguin rookery where a colony of Magellanic Penguins nest and breed for the mating season here in the place where they were born. With luck, these penguins can live 25 years or more. Mating pairs return every year to lay eggs, either under shubs or buried in sandy burrows, producing one or two chicks the parents take turns watching and feeding. At this time of year, most of the chicks will have hatched. In the area open to visitors, we may see several hundred penguins.

At the conclusion of the field trip, we hike back to the bus and proceed into town.

Lunch: Outside Punta Arenas, we have lunch at an old warehouse, part of a homestead and farm, refurbished to serve visitors with tasty local fare.

Afternoon: As we explore the rest of the warehouse, learn from a local expert about the old machinery you will see, used by the first colonists of this part of the world.

As a special highlight, observe a sheep shearing demonstration that shows how people used to make their livelihoods.

Reboarding the bus, we drive into Punta Arenas to see the Plaza de Armas, the main square, and walk to a cemetery that commemorates some of the local leading figures. We return to and reboard the ship.

Dinner: Aboard ship.

Evening: At leisure.

We regroup at the hotel late afternoon and board the motorcoach to a tango hall for a dance lesson. Born around 1880, the tango was considered the “vulgar” dance and music of the capital’s “arrabales” or lower class neighborhoods, blending gaucho verse with Spanish and Italian music. Permeated with nostalgia over a disappearing way of life, the tango show expresses the apprehensions and anxieties of individuals, ranging from mundane pastimes and popular diversions to more profound feelings.

Dinner: At the tango hall, enjoy a plated meal featuring local cuisine with complimentary wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages. In keeping with local custom, dinner begins at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Evening: Having learned what’s involved in the tango, see a show by talented dancers. The show begins at approximately 10:00 p.m. and we return to the hotel at approximately midnight. For anyone who feels the need to return sooner, the motorcoach will make an earlier transfer.
