The Mountain Lake Conservancy is located at 3800 feet in the Appalachian Mountains.

Equipment Requirements
Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for walks around the property. The weather can be unpredictable, so a raincoat is also recommended. Nights can be cooler than the surrounding valleys.

Upon your arrival and check-in to Mountain Lake, join for a wine and cheese mixer to meet fellow Road Scholars. Enjoy dinner in Harvest Restaurant, and a brief orientation to prepare you for the week's adventure!

Afternoon: 4:00 pm - Check-in at Lodge Lobby. 5:00-6:00 pm - Wine & cheese social to meet and greet fellow participants.

Dinner: 6:00 pm - Dinner in Harvest Restaurant.

Evening: 7:45 pm - Program orientation.

Start the week's program off with Appalachian Poetry with Jeff Mann of Virginia Tech University. Enjoy folktales of Appalachia with Charles Lytton in the evening.

Morning: 9:00 -11:30 am - Introduction to Appalachian Poetry with Virginia Tech professor, Jeff Mann.

Lunch: 12:00 pm - Lunch in Harvest Restaurant.

Afternoon: 1:30 - 4:00 pm - Session is continued, Appalachian Poetry with Jeff Mann followed with music played on the dulcimer.

Dinner: 6:00 pm - Dinner in Harvest Restaurant.

Day Three: Tuesday, September 23 - Join in a naturalist hike along the Lower Jungle ...
Join in a naturalist hike along the Lower Jungle Trail to explore flora and fauna of the mountains. Free afternoon for activities and exploration at Mountain Lake Lodge. Relax for the evening movie: "Song Catcher".

Note: The naturalist hike is along a wide, gravel path along relatively flat terrain. Approximately 2 miles in distance.

Breakfast: 7:30 - 9:00 am - Hearty buffet breakfast available in Harvest Restaurant.

Morning: 9:00 am - Learn about Appalachian ecology on a nature hike along the Lower Jungle Trail. Approximately 2 miles. round-trip in length on flat dirt road through hardwood forest.

Lunch: 12:00 pm - Lunch in Harvest Restaurant.

Afternoon: A free afternoon in the program allows participants to participate in activities around the grounds such as tennis, bocce, geocaching, archery, hiking, biking or relaxation!

Dinner: 6:00 pm - Dinner in Harvest Restaurant.

Evening: 7:30 pm - Showing of the movie "Songcatcher".

Ballads of the Appalachians and Storytelling with Alice Kinder in the morning. Bus tour of the covered bridges and trip to the Pearisburg Historical Society Museum Complex. Porch jam session with local musicians featuring traditional Appalachian music.

Breakfast: 7:30-9:00 am - Buffet breakfast available in Harvest Restaurant.

Morning: 9:00 am - 11:30 am - Storytelling and Appalachian Ballads with Alice Kinder.

Lunch: 12:00 pm - Lunch in Harvest Restaurant.

Day Five: Thursday, September 25 - Morning excursion to the Giles County Historical ...
Morning excursion to the Giles County Historical Museum in Pearisburg. Afternoon session on local history and ecology with the Martins, a long-time family of the mountain and county. Enjoy an evening ecology program, "Songs of the Night".

Breakfast: 7:30 - 9:00 am - Buffet breakfast available in Harvest Restaurant.

Morning: 9:00 am - Depart for a trip down the mountain to Pearisburg to tour the Giles County Historical Society museum and Andrew Johnston house.

Lunch: 12:00 pm - Return to Mountain Lake for lunch in Harvest Restaurant.

Afternoon: 1:30 - 4:00 pm - Local history and music with the Martin family.

Dinner: 6:00 pm - Dinner in Harvest Restaurant.

Evening: 7:30 pm - Evening program with Jerry Via, "Songs of the Night", exploring Appalachian ecology.

Morning presentation by local historian Jim Walker on the History of Mountain Lake & Springs of Virginia. Followed by the program wrap-up and check out. Enjoy lunch with the group in Harvest Restaurant before your departure.

Breakfast: 7:30 - 9:00 am - Buffet breakfast in Harvest Restaurant.

Morning: 11:00 am - Check out of Mountain Lake Lodge.

Morning: 9:00 am - Slideshow presentation: "The History of Mountain Lake and the Springs of Virginia". Followed by program wrap-up.
