Day Two: Monday, May 19 - History of Wine in Santa Barbara County/Vineyard ...
History of Wine in Santa Barbara County/Vineyard Impact/Larner Vineyard/Melville Vineyard & Winery

Note: Solvang is a pedestrian-friendly village. Be prepared to walk up to one mile each day on flat paved sidewalks from hotel to Solvang tasting rooms and restaurants and on uneven terrain at wineries and vineyards.

Breakfast: Breakfast at Hadsten House

Morning: CLASS: Brief History of Wine in Santa Barbara County and an Explanation of “terroir” and the American Viticulture Area (AVA) System.

FIELD TRIP: Larner Vineyard

The Larner Vineyard is a small, family-owned vineyard located at Ballard Canyon and managed by the second generation, Michael and Christina Larner.

Michael, who has an MS degree from the Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis, will meet us and walk us through part of the vineyard, explaining terroir, trellising, and different philosophies like organic, sustainable and biodynamic. After the tour, we’ll sit at tables at the edge of the vineyard to taste wine from his vineyard.

Lunch: Lunch at Larner with wines from Larner Vineyards

Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Melville Vineyards & Winery.

The Melvilles believe that a fine wine begins in the terroir (the-RWAHR) or microclimate of a vineyard. Terroir is the French term for soil. In the vineyard, it encompasses soil type and geographic factors which may influence the quality of wine.

Ron Melville and his sons, Brent and Chad, decided to develop their estate vineyards and winery—which means that the grapes are farmed by, and sourced from, Melville Vineyards—in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Since then, they have also developed an interest in Rhone varietals, particularly Northern Rhone Syrah and Viognier. The Melville estate achieves quality through the integrity of its farming practice and its respect for the microclimate. After a tour of the vineyard, we will enjoy tasting wines from their estate.

Dinner: Dinner with a glass of wine at Cecco Ristorante; serving daily specials using fresh ingredients in a local setting.

Breakfast: Breakfast at Hadsten House

Morning: CLASS: Blending and Bottling Wines

FIELD TRIP: The Brander Vineyard

We’ll begin at The Brander Vineyard - one of the original vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley and the producer of world-class Sauvignon Blanc wines in a variety of styles, as well as small quantities of hand-crafted Bordeaux-style red wines.

Winemaker, Fabian Bravo, will first explain what characteristics he gets from each of the wine components we’ll use and what he attempts to accomplish by blending. In teams, we will then blend what each team feels is the best combination of the varietals.

Lunch: At Brander Vineyard, in a very French-like courtyard, we’ll have lunch with a glass of Brander wine—including the wine you just blended!

Afternoon: After lunch, we’ll stop briefly in Los Olivos (pop. 1000), where stagecoaches embarked for the (eight hour) trip over the Santa Ynez Mountains to Santa Barbara. We’ll then return to our hotel in Solvang where you’ll have time to walk through the Danish inspired community on your own. A map of the town's winery tasting rooms will be handed out, along with a description of which wines each winery is famous for, so you can taste on your own, if you’d like.

Dinner: Food and Wine Pairing Dinner

During dinner, a local winemaker will join us, giving descriptions of his wine when they’re served and why the food and wine pairings were chosen for our final dinner.
