Day Two: Monday, October 20 - Arizona and Phoenix History 101/Explore Phoenix C...
Arizona and Phoenix History 101/Explore Phoenix City Tour/Presentation on Native Arizona: Prehistory to Today

Note: Walking short distances in downtown Phoenix and in the Arizona Capitol Museum.

Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast in the Great American Grille Restaurant. Large buffet breakfast, as well as omelettes cooked to order. Be sure to allow enough time to enjoy your breakfast and coffee in this beautiful setting in Old Town Scottsdale.

Morning: Learn about Arizona's early days and its capital city, Phoenix. A local historian will provide not only the historical framework for our exploration this week, but will also provide you with some tantalizing stories and tales you probably haven’t heard before.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the hotel.

Afternoon: Now that you've heard about Arizona and Phoenix’ beginnings, we'll get out and see it with a comprehensive city tour. See the architecture and vibrancy of downtown Phoenix, the neighborhoods near Camelback Mountain, and the beautiful Biltmore Hotel and Resort before returning to our hotel in Old Town Scottsdale. The Arizona Biltmore is the only existing luxury hotel with design elements from Frank Lloyd Wright. Built in 1929, the Biltmore was immediately crowned the “Jewel of the Desert” and has been a preferred resort for celebrities, heads of state, and business scions. While in the downtown area we’ll make a stop (time permitting) at the Arizona Capitol Museum, the former building which served as the territorial capitol, and was built to show that Arizona was ready to become a state, which it did in 1912. The museum houses the unique silver and copper punchbowl service from the USS Arizona, miraculously removed before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Learn about those who came before -- the Hohokam and their legacy of canals in the Phoenix desert. Our Native American speaker will also talk about the contemporary Native American tribes and issues in the greater Phoenix region.
