Morning: Two courses: Folklore in Modern Society (stories and songs). Discussion about the Appalachian heritage of "Wild crafting", the collecting of native plants, barks, roots, and more for cash money in a "bartering economy". Hands on look at some of the important products from a wild harvest. Short film about foraging and preparation of plant material for food and medicine.

Lunch: Lunch served in Hotel dining room, buffet style

Afternoon: Cradle of Courage (Hart 1920). This silent film with William S. Hart, well-known as a hero of westerns, demonstrates that war can have a positive effect on a man’s future.

Morning: Course One: Uses of Folklore in a Modern Society. Course Two: Continued discussion about the diversity of plants/trees in Appalachia. Explanation of the unique habit for such plants. (lecture and short film)

Afternoon: One course offering -- The Last Flight (Dieterle 1931) is a “disillusionment narrative” about World War I soldiers who cannot figure out their future. We will discuss how this kind of narrative is important to World War II films as well. Free time in the afternoon.

Evening: Movie which will be discussed in class tomorrow.

Evening: Class: The Blue Dahlia (Marshall 1946). A film noir that reminded postwar audiences of the transition problems of returning veterans.

Afternoon: One course offering -- Best Years of Our Lives (Wyler 1946). The classic homecoming film follows three servicemen as they adapt to civilian life. The role of women in helping men recover from the effects of war is particularly important to the story. Free time from 3:30-5:30.
