Road Scholar
Program #5831RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Elevation Note
Flagstaff's elevation is 7,000 feet. Participants with heart/lung conditions, check with physician.

Day Two: Monday, July 14 - Challenge Course/Outdoor Survival/The Bug Show or...
Note: Walking on mostly paved pathways at Bearizona. Some walking off road over uneven terrain -- no more than 1/4 mile -- for survival activity.

Breakfast: Continental breakfast in the hotel including waffles, hot and cold cereals, coffee, juice and fruit.

Morning: Shuttle to Northern Arizona University's Challenge Course on south campus for a morning of team building events. Our goal is to build a trusting and cohesive group of grandparents and grandchildren who just met each other the night before. We will start out with on the ground games, move to low and then to high element activities. This will include some of the elements of the static course with activities at heights 25-30 feet off the ground. This progression of activities will challenge the group with increasingly difficult tasks while encouraging cooperation, inspiring confidence and having fun, all within a supportive and safe environment. Grandparents as well as grandchildren are encouraged to participate, but all activities are 'challenge by choice'. (Requires only average strength and coordination). Then travel to Williams, AZ to Bearizona.

Lunch: Sack lunch at Bearizona.

Afternoon: At Bearizona, watch hawks, owls, falcons and other raptors in “free flight” demonstrations while learning about their natural history, conservation and important role in ecosystem health. Visit Fort Bearizona to see black bear cubs and other North American animals in a walk-through setting. Then travel through the Drive Thru Wildlife Park to see large North American mammals including bison, wolves, big horn sheep and black bears. Depart Bearizona for the surrounding ponderosa forest where we’ll learn some basic survival techniques and build an emergency shelter out of natural materials. Return to the hotel in late afternoon.

Dinner: Dinner at a local Greek restaurant with a variety of entree choices for all ages and palates.

Evening: Evening presentation on a topic geared to be of interest to both grandparents and grandchildren. The presentation will be a hands-on insect demonstration with hissing cockroaches, tarantulas, millipedes and more! Come and see how wonderful insects are and how different they are from what Hollywood portrays. Alternately, the kids-geared presentation might be about the efforts to reestablish the once nearly-extinct California Condor, America's largest bird, in northern Arizona.

Day Three: Tuesday, July 15 - Navajo Reservation/Lee's Ferry & Navajo Bridge/Ra...
Navajo Reservation/Lee's Ferry & Navajo Bridge/Rafting on the Colorado River

Note: Participants need to be able to climb in and out of a motorized raft, with assistance, for smooth water float trip. Daytime temperatures can be very warm (90F) and the sun quite strong so it is important to stay hydrated and protect ones-self from the sun with a hat, sunscreen and/or long-sleeved shirt and long pants (quick drying). Optional: short 1/4 mile walk to view ancient rock art during smooth water raft trip.

Breakfast: Continental breakfast in the hotel including waffles, hot and cold cereals, coffee, juice and fruit.

Morning: Depart for Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Nation, and then to the spectacular Lee’s Ferry area, site of a historic ferry crossing and Mormon settlement called Lonely Dell. Stop at the Navajo Bridge where you can look down to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon below. This is a place where condors can sometimes be seen soaring above the Canyon or roosting on the bridge supports or Canyon walls. Look for the wing tags and their massive 9.5 foot wingspans. The California condor is North America's largest flying bird! Stop at the wild looking mushroom rocks – just part of the fascinating geology near Lee’s Ferry. Travel to the launch ramp to board the rafts and begin your smooth-water float upstream past the original ferry site and into the red sandstone cliffs of Glen Canyon in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Lunch: Enjoy your lunch after boarding the boat for the raft trip.

Afternoon: Enjoy your lunch as you gaze up at the high cliffs searching for golden eagles, California condors, hawks and turkey vultures. Stop to see the amazing petroglyphs, perhaps 1000 years old, just a short distance from shore. Then dare your friends to jump into the 48 degree water of the Colorado River before reboarding the rafts for the spectacular trip around the Horseshoe Bend -- 1000' above -- and back to Lee's Ferry. Remember, Lee’s Ferry is where the Grand Canyon officially begins. You may see river guides readying their rafts for their exciting trips through the Grand Canyon. Please note: raft trip participation requires signature on a liability waiver.

Dinner: Dinner at the historic Cameron Trading Post. One of your entree choices is an authentic Navajo Taco with all the trimmings.

Evening: Return to Flagstaff after dinner.

Everyone will participate in a hands-on presentation on the mighty earth forces over millions and billions of years that created the San Francisco Peaks and the Grand Canyon. Which layer will YOU be?!

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant with many choices from an extensive salad and taco bar.

Afternoon: After lunch, enjoy a free afternoon to explore historic Flagstaff and regional attractions on your own or with new friends or enjoy a dip in the hotel's pool. Because of the numerous opportunities for individual exploration you may wish to combine the afternoon and evening free times and go to Sedona, Meteor Crater, Montezuma Castle, Petrified Forest or other point of interest.
