Day Two: Monday, April 28 - Bulloch Hall Plantation/Archibald Smith Plantatio...
Bulloch Hall Plantation/Archibald Smith Plantation/Swan Coach House/Swan Mansion and Gardens/Presentation on Gone With The Wind

Breakfast:

Morning: You will visit two plantations: Bulloch Hall, completed in 1839 for Major James Stephens Bulloch, one of Roswell's founders. Bulloch Hall is a Greek Revival structure and one of the South's finest examples of true temple-form architecture. In 1853, Major Bulloch's daughter, Mittie, married Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. in the dining room of the house. Their son, Theodore Roosevelt became our 26th President. The second plantation is Archibald Smith Plantation. Hidden among the trees in Historic Roswell, Georgia lies the elegant home constructed by one of the town’s founding fathers, Archibald Smith. In 1838, the Smith family and nearly 30 of their slaves left their two plantations in St. Marys, along the southern coast of Georgia, to make a new start with some 300 acres of cotton farmland north of the Roswell Town Square. What this well-to-do 19th Century farming family did not realize when they constructed their home was that it would be preserved by their descendants as an untouched treasure of southern history.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the renown Swan Coach House. Prior to relocating to its current location, the Foundation members had to remodel and enlarge the building that once served as the carriage house of the handsome Philip Schutze designed Swan House to create the charming Restaurant and Gift Shop. In 1985, Mr. and Mrs. O. Ray Moore built the Art Gallery, an integral part of the Swan Coach House. The Swan Coach House continues to be a labor of love for the Forward Arts Foundation members. They continue to strive to create a Southern, hospitable atmosphere where we will enjoy our lunch.

Afternoon: Discover life on a typical yeomen farm in Antebellum Georgia when you visit the Tullie Smith Farm House. Enjoy heritage vegetables and field crops in period gardens and see the wide variety of plants beloved by today's Atlantans. You will also visit the Swan House, a 1928 Georgian mansion. The 33 acres of gardens, woodlands and nature trails allow visitors to learn more about plants native to the state. A curator will be your expert guide through the gardens.

Dinner: Dinner at hotel.

Evening: Gone With The Wind will always be associated with Atlanta and with plantations of the south. Hear the real story about Tara, the plantation, and facts about the author of Gone With the Wind.

Note: Atlanta to Charleston will be approximately 5 hours on a motor coach with a stop along the way. Movie on board.

Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel.

Morning: Before going to the Botanical Gardens, enjoy a motor coach sightseeing trip of Atlanta. Then spend the rest of the morning at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. But here the setting is strictly tropical and the focus is on orchids. This is just one of many areas for viewing. The Garden features dozens of permanent pieces of art, including sculptures and water features. Depending on what time of year you are visiting, there will be many exhibits by special artist. This is a favorite! We will have a guided tour of the gardens and anyone may branch off and go on their own to spend more or less time as they choose.

Travel Charleston to Beaufort/Carriage Ride/Travel Beaufort to Savannah

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel

Morning: Depart Charleston, SC - Guided field trip to Beaufort, SC by carriage. Beaufort entered its golden era about 1800, when Sea Island cotton debuted, and many of Beaufort’s loveliest mansions were built by the wealthy owners of cotton, indigo, and rice plantations. By the 1800s, Port Royal -- the Town incorporated in 1874 -- also had found peace and prosperity. It even boasted a Navy yard, but an 1893 hurricane and economic calamities later brought hard times. Today, reminders of the area’s colorful history abound in architecture preserved with loving care and folkways honored across generations. The entire downtown Beaufort area is designated a historic district. Architecture from many grand cultures and eras includes French, Colonial, Spanish-American, and Revolutionary origins. At least 90 significant homes, forts, churches, cemeteries, inns, and other buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Lunch: Lunch in Beaufort is on your own and at your own pace and time. We will have a list of restaurants to choose from.

Trolley Around Savannah/Lunch at The Olde Pink House/Dinner on Riverstreet/Free Evening On Riverstreet

Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel

Morning: Field trip of Savannah homes and gardens includes a trolley and walking tour of homes and gardens overlooking some of the oldest squares in the Landmark District. The history of Savannah is intertwined with its gardening. Every spring Savannah becomes a pilgrimage for tourist, enhanced by the blooming azaleas and flowers in the 22 major squares and parks. The very reason for the founding of the city was to grow items that could be sold to profit the colony. With General Oglethorpe's plan for the numerous squares, Savannah's legacy as a garden city became cemented through time. An introduction to the squares of Savannah is only the beginning of the tour. Savannah also host some of the finest private urban gardens in the country. As interesting as the gardens of Savannah are also the gates. Savannah has a significant history as a center of elegant ironwork produced at many of the now defunct ironworks.
