Afternoon: Settle in room, meet at appointed time for Orientation, Welcome Reception, and Neighborhood Walk to familiarize yourself with banks, pharmacies and stores.

Day Three: Thursday, June 26 - Welcome to Rome \ Colosseum and Roman Forum
Note: Steep stairs to reach the upper level of the Colosseum. A modern elevator at one end of the arena will take you to the upper level but you must double back the length of the arena to ride the elevator to the ground level and exit. The terrain of the Forum is uneven with dirt and original cobblestone paths.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Begin to unravel the multiple layers of Roman history through the sharp insight of a professor who will set the stage for your explorations.

Lunch: Lunch at a restaurant in Trastevere.

Afternoon: A local expert leads the visit to the Colosseum, iconic symbol of Imperial Rome built nearly 2,000 years ago. Skip the line with the group reserved entrance. Learn how the amphitheater was used for gladiatorial contests and later stripped of its stone facade for other construction projects.

Dinner: Dinner at a restaurant along the Via dei Fori Imperiali.

Evening: Ride the tram with the group leader or walk back to the hotel at your leisure.

Day Four: Friday, June 27 - Treasures of the Vatican \ Ancient Roman House \ ...
Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Meet in lecture room where an art historian gives an illustrated lecture on the artistic highlights of masterpieces in the Vatican Museum including Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and S. Peter's Basilica. Coach to Piazza Venezia, site of the imposing white marble monument to Victor Emanuel and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Lunch: Lunch at a local cafe is served buffet style.

Afternoon: A guided visit of an ancient Roman house unearthed during the restoration of a modern building. The layers of the archaeological site reveal details of everyday life through the centuries. Guided walk to Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Fountain of Trevi, and the Spanish Steps. Coach back to the hotel.

Day Five: Saturday, June 28 - Vatican Museums \ Mosaic Workshop
Note: An escalator connects two floors of the vast museum, but there are flights of wide marble stairs along the path to the Sistine Chapel. In the crowded museum there are few opportunities to sit and rest until the Sistine Chapel which has benches along the side walls.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Coach to the Vatican Museums (reserved entrance). The vast museum is comprised of a number of collections: Egypt and Mesopotamia; Greek, Etruscan, Rome; a picture gallery. There are unannounced closings of galleries, so our expert will maximize the time and discuss the most significant pieces available. Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, with scenes from the book of Genesis and the Last Judgment behind the main altar are the main attraction. From the Sistine Chapel, the guide will lead the group through the back door down to the Basilica of St. Peter. In a side chapel, behind a protective glass, you can see the famous Pieta', Michelangelo's early work and only piece he signed. There are countless historical references and events associated with this Basilica, once the largest in the world. Stepping out onto the front porch, you will admire the colonnade designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Lunch: Coach to the Mosaic Workshop. Enjoy a selection of food at the cafe.

Afternoon: Participate in creating your own mosaic with instructors at a local art school. Coach back to the hotel.

Dinner: Dinner at a pizzeria in Trastevere.

Evening: A leisurely stroll in Trastevere. Chance to catch a street artist performance, a likely happening on warm summer evenings.

Day Six: Sunday, June 29 - Capitoline Museum \ Train to Florence
Note: Wide marble stairs to reach the various levels of the Capitoline Museum. The walk from the train station in Florence to the hotel is a few long city blocks. The walk from the hotel to the Accademia is on city streets (limited traffic) with narrow sidewalks.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Have checked luggage ready for van transfer to the hotel in Florence. Leave hand luggage in the hotel deposit area. Expert-led visit of the Capitoline Museum where you can examine up close masterpieces of ancient art, including the famous bronze She Wolf, Marcus Aurelius, the foundations of the temple to Jupiter and fragments of Constantine's colossal statue. Passing through the Tabularium you reach the Palazzo Nuovo wing where the Dying Gaul and Capitoline Venus are on display.

Lunch: Buffet lunch at the hotel.

Afternoon: Pick up your hand luggage and transfer by coach to the Termini Station. Travel on a high speed train at speeds reaching 120 mph. Ride is about an hour and a half. Settle into your room and meet in the lobby late afternoon for an expert-led visit of the Accademia (Michelangelo's statue of David).

Dinner: Dinner at a restaurant in the vicinity of the San Lorenzo Market.

Evening: Excursion of the historical section of Florence to orient everyone on the layout of the city, locate landmarks, find ATM's and pharmacies.

Day Seven: Monday, June 30 - Fresco Painting Lesson \ Palazzo Vecchio \ Renais...
Note: Minimal exertion in the fresco workshop. Palazzo Vecchio requires climbing a few flights of stairs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Walk to Piazza della Signoria. In the art room of the Palazzo Vecchio (still the City Hall since the Middle Ages), a teacher illustrates the steps required to paint using the fresco technique; from creating the lines with a sack of coal dust, to spreading the fresh plaster and mixing the pigments. After the 6"x 9" tile dries, you may choose to keep it, otherwise it is recycled. Expert-led visit of the residential quarters of the Palazzo Vecchio to see original pieces of art, including Donatello's Judith and Holofernes and sculptures by Michelangelo. See Machiavelli's study when he was Secretary of State for the Republic.

Lunch: Lunch at a restaurant near the Piazza della Signoria.

Afternoon: An illustrated lecture on Florence and the Renaissance. Some free time late afternoon to explore Florence at your own pace.

Dinner: Dinner on your own.

Day Eight: Tuesday, July 01 - Renaissance Art \ Galileo's Instruments \ Uffizi ...
Note: The Uffizi Gallery visit requires climbing 3 flights of stairs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Illustrated presentation on medieval and Renaissance art in preparation for the visit to the Uffizi Gallery. In the Piazza del Duomo admire the Gates of Paradise on the Baptistery doors. The walk continues towards the Ponte Vecchio to the Museum of Science. Expert-led visit of the collection of scientific instruments, including the telescope Galileo used to discover the moons of Jupiter. Modern renovations have enhanced the museum with interactive displays.

Lunch: Select your eatery. Group leader will have suggestions for places to eat.

Afternoon: Skip the line with the group's reserved entrance to the Uffizi Gallery. Self-directed visit; stay as long as you want. At the end of the second corridor is a refreshment bar for snacks. The balcony has a wonderful view of Brunelleschi's Dome and the watch tower of Palazzo Vecchio.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Note: Short walk to Piazza S. Maria Novella and the Mercato.

Morning: Walk to S. Maria Novella. With your new found knowledge of fresco painting, an expert expounds on the frescoes by Masaccio and Ghirlandaio found in the church. Following the visit, free time to walk through the S. Lorenzo Mercato, the indoor food and produce market and food court. In the area of the market pushcart merchants offer a variety of leather goods, clothing, and souvenirs.

Lunch: Lunch on your own. There are many choices around the market area.

Afternoon: Free afternoon to relax or explore Florence at your own pace.

Day Ten: Thursday, July 03 - Train to Venice \ Glass Workshop
Note: Walk to S. M. Novella train station to board high speed train to Venice. The hotel is 250 yards from the station in Venice. Easy walk on the small island of Murano; some steps and rises over bridges that span minor canals.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Luggage transported to Venice hotel by van. On the train you will carry only your hand bag, tote, or day pack.

Lunch: Lunch at the hotel restaurant and check-in to the rooms.

Afternoon: Ride the vaporetto (public boat) to the island of Murano. Learn about glass making and create your own glass tile decoration under the supervision of an instructor at a glass working school. The tile you create will be fused in the kiln and delivered to your hotel. Vaporetto to a dock near the hotel.

Dinner: At a local restaurant to savor Venetian cuisine.

Note: Expect crowding on the vaporetto. Walks in Venice involve crossing multiple bridges that span the minor canals.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: An illustrated lecture on how Venice was built. Ride the vaporetto to the Rialto Bridge and Market. A local expert leads the walk of the lively market.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Travel to Piazza S. Marco on the vaporetto along Venice's famed Grand Canal. Expert-led visit of S. Mark's Cathedral decorated with more than 45,000 sq. ft. of mosaics, giving the impression of streets of gold.

Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant. Ride the vaporetto or take a leisurely walk back to the hotel through the calle (streets) of Venice.

Day Twelve: Saturday, July 05 - Dragon Boat \ Artisan Workshop
Note: Row, row, row your boat hard if you want to beat the other teams; otherwise sit at the stern and enjoy the ride. At the end of the morning you may be less dry than how you began the day. Moving about in Venice always involves walking as well as stairs and ramps over bridges.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Vaporetto to the Venice Canoe Club Boathouse. An instructor goes over the basics of rowing before you choose teams and enjoy a friendly race in a dragon boat.

Lunch: Lunch at a restaurant near the hotel.

Afternoon: Visit an artisan's workshop to learn about the carving techniques of making gondola oars and oar locks.

Dinner: Dinner on your own.

Day Thirteen: Sunday, July 06 - Doge's Palace \ Bridge of Sighs \ Peggy Guggenhei...
Note: Walks in Venice involve crossing multiple bridges that span the minor canals. The visit through the many rooms of the Doge's Palace requires climbing a few flights of stairs. Narrow passages through the rooms of the Prisons and over the Bridge of Sighs.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Vaporetto to St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace, Venice's government headquarters, decorated by Titian, Canaletto and Giorgione, just to mention a few. From the richly decorated halls of the Palazzo, walk through the narrow Prison passages and over the Bridge of Sighs for a unique view of the canal.

Lunch: Lunch on your own.

Afternoon: Having been surrounded by ancient and Renaissance masterpieces and structures, enjoy the modern art collection at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Relax in the courtyard of the palazzo on the Grand Canal while the docents introduce the life and times of the wealthy American collector. The group splits in two for the visit of the collection housed in the small rooms of the gallery. The docent leading the students elicits their reactions to the form and expression they see in the works of modern art.

Dinner: Farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant. Your glass mementos will be available for you to gingerly pack.

Day Fourteen: Monday, July 07 - Arrivederci Venezia
Note: You and your luggage transfer to the airport by water taxi. From dock, less than a 10 min. walk under a canopy to reach the terminal. Luggage carts (1 euro coin deposit ) are available at the dock; the coin is refunded at the terminal.

Depart From: Transfer from the hotel to the Venice Marco Polo airport for departure.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Sack breakfast for those with early departure times.
