*FIELD TRIP TO HOVENWEEP NATIONAL MONUMENT (Spectacular Ancient Tower Ruins): A guided field trip with an Archaeologist!

Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.

Morning: FIELD TRIP: Hovenweep National Monument. Human habitation at Hovenweep dates to more than 10,000 years ago when nomadic Paleoindians gathered food and hunted game. By about A.D. 900, people started to settle at Hovenweep year-round, planting and harvesting crops in what was then rich soil of the mesa top. The towers of Hovenweep were built by ancestral Puebloans who occupied the Four Corners area from about A.D. 500 to A.D. 1300. Similarities in architecture, masonry and pottery styles indicate that the inhabitants of Hovenweep were closely associated with groups living at Mesa Verde and other nearby sites. The towers may have been celestial observatories, defensive structures, storage facilities, civil buildings, homes or any combination of the above. While archeologists have found that most towers were associated with kivas (underground or partially underground chambers), their actual function remains a mystery.

Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch at Hovenweep, served by your instructor and program facilitator.

Afternoon: After your guided tour, your painting instructor will be with you, to help with any questions as you draw/paint/sketch or Plein Air paint with your watercolors. A very full day of fun! Be sure to bring your camera for future painting references.

Dinner: A traditional Kelly Place cook-out may be enjoyed on the courtyard tables (weather permitting), as you relax with your new friends and enjoy the beautiful Southwestern scenery. Beer and wine are offered at no cost.

Evening: GALLERY SHOWING – Let’s share our favorite works from the past days, with an evening gathering of our group - like-artistic-creative souls!
