Day One: Sunday, September 22 - Arrival/Check-in/Registration Welcome Reception, ...

Afternoon: CHECK-IN & REGISTRATION beginning 3:00-3:30 pm in the Mayflower Lodge Office on the Pilgrim Pines Campus. When you get your room assignment, you will also receive you welcome packet containing your name tag, up-to-date schedule, and other important information for the week. WELCOME RECEPTION: Join us for coffee and snacks from 3:30-5:00 pm with an opportunity to meet fellow Road Scholars.

Dinner: Our welcome dinner begins at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. Served buffet style the meal will include a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and choice of drinks. Gluten free and special dietary menus are provided by our professional chefs on request

Evening: Orientation 7:30 pm, will begin with introductions of our instructor Greg Athnos and program for the week. Time will be given to review the schedule, cover responsibilities safety guidelines, emergency procedures and answer questions. PROGRAM OVERVIEW... We are honored to have Greg Athnos, retired professor of music from North Park University in Chicago return to be our instructor. Greg received Elderhostel's outstanding Instructor award and this is his 36th year to teach Elderhostel programs. His lectures for the week will feature composers and artists of the last 2000 years of Western Culture.

Day Two: Monday, September 23 - Lectures on symbolism, Michelangelo and Handel's ...
Lectures on symbolism, Michelangelo and Handel's Messiah with an opportunity to enjoy an afternoon pontoon boat rides, canoeing, hiking, etc.

Note: Opportunities for waterfront activities on campus and a planned hike

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served 8:00-8:45 am, buffet style in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring choices of cold and hot cereals, bread to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: Greg Athnos who received Elderhostel's outstanding Instructor award and has taught for 36 years in Elderhostel programs will begin morning with a lecture on "Visions: The Cathedral and Symbolism" Coffee Break will feature homemade danish rolls, fruit, coffee, tea and water. His second lecture of the morning will focus on "Michelangelo: Genius of the Renaissance"

Lunch: Lunch will be served buffet style in the Mayflower Dining Room inviting you to the choices of a full salad bar, soup of the day and taco salad and or sandwich, brownies or cookies and drinks of your choosing. Gluten free or special vegetarian meals are available upon request.

Afternoon: Enjoy the recreational opportunities on campus including boat rides, a planned hike, canoeing and the incredible beauty of the autumn season.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing for the day, a full buffet dinner awaits your palate featuring a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and drinks of your choice. Alternative entrées and special dietary menus are available upon request.

Evening: Greg will conclude our day with a lecture on "Handel's 'Messiah' The Work You Think You Know - But Don't"

The evening will conclude with a light snack in the Dining Room along with opportunities to converse, build a puzzle, watch TV read or join in a table game.

Day Three: Tuesday, September 24 - Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, all in one day, plus ...
Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, all in one day, plus a covered bridge tour and classical piano concert

Note: By maxi-van a tour of the covered bridges of Cheshire County concluding the day with a classical piano concert

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room, buffet style featuring choices of cold and hot cereals, breads to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea and juice.

Morning: Mr Athnos will continue his lecture series focused first today on "Bach: The Man Who Made All the Wrong Decisions" The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and coffee cake to help renew your energy. Greg's second lecture of the day will focus on "Mozart, Salieri, and the "Requiem"

Lunch: Lunch is served buffet style 12:30- 1:15 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room with delicious choices from the salad bar, homemade soup, chicken sandwiches, dessert and choice of drinks. Our professional chefs are always available to prepare alternative food requests..

Afternoon: The afternoon will feature an opportunity to tour the six covered bridges of Cheshire County by Maxi- van. In the late afternoon, Mr Athnos will present his third lecture of the day on Beethoven's 9th Symphony: Portrait of the French Revolution"

Dinner: Dinner will be served buffet style beginning at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert, and drinks of your choice. Gluten free and special dietary menus are always available upon request.

Evening: Entertainment tonight will feature a concert by a classical pianist. - TBA. After the concert you are invited to the Dining Room for a light snack, conversation, puzzle-making, TV or whatever.

Day Four: Wednesday, September 25 - Field trip to Norman Rockwell site in Arlington, ...
Field trip to Norman Rockwell site in Arlington, VT and lunch at Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln's home.

Note: Field trip will be by bus and will include a box lunch at Hildene, a tour of Hildene and a visit to a Norman Rockwell site.

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served buffet style from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring pancakes, sausage or bacon, hot and cold cereals, bread to toast, fruit, yogurt bar along with coffee, tea, and juice.

Morning: Our field trip will be by bus to a Norman Rockwell site. The field trip will continue with a box lunch at Hildene followed by a tour of Robert Todd Lincoln's home and grounds.

Lunch: A delicious Box Lunch will be served onsite at Hildene.

Afternoon: Our Field trip will continue in the afternoon returning late afternoon to the Pilgrim Pines Campus.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing for the day, feast on make your own salad from the salad bar, hot buffet of meat and vegetable, dessert and choice of drinks. Gluten free and special dietary menus are always available upon request.

Evening: We will close our day with the music and dance of New Hampshire - Entertainers TBA After our music and play you are invited to the Dining Room for a light snack, conversation, and your favorite way to conclude the day.

Day Five: Thursday, September 26 - Lectures today will feature Dvorak, Tschaikowsky,...
Lectures today will feature Dvorak, Tschaikowsky, and the Impressionist era.

Note: Opportunity will be given to enjoy the beauty of nature and express oneself through Homespun

Breakfast: A delicious breakfast will be served from 8:00-8:45 am in the Mayflower Dining Room. Enjoy the many choices that await your palate.

Morning: Mr Athnos will begin the day focused on "Dvorak and Smetana: Bohemian Nationalists" The morning break will bring coffee, tea, water, fruit and homemade donuts to renew your energy. His second lecture of the morning will be on "Tschaikowsky: Russian With a 'Western View'".

Lunch: Once again a full buffet lunch awaits you in the Mayflower Dining Room. Served from 12:30-1:15 pm the salad bar, soup of the day, tuna or turkey wraps,dessert and drinks of your choice await your consumption. Gluten free alternatives are always available upon request.

Afternoon: Determined by the weather, choices will be given to enjoy the beauty of the area, i.e., trip to Keene, hiking, relaxing by the waterfront, etc. Late afternoon, Mr Athnos will bring us into the world of "The Impressionists: Monet & Debussy: Breaking the Rules"

Dinner: Tonight a full linen dinner will be served buffet style at 6:00 pm with no dessert as we will be making our own sundaes later in the evening.

Evening: Tonight, Road Scholars are invited to participate in a Homespun event where they have the opportunity to share their favorite story, poem, writing, song, joke, etc with all their friends.

Evening: After our Homespun, return to the Dining Room where we will make our own sundaes, enjoy conversations and close the day, the week with informal stories.

Day Six: Friday, September 27 - Closing lectures on Rachmaninoff & Stravinsky alo...
Closing lectures on Rachmaninoff & Stravinsky along with Poland 1989: I was there!

Note: Closing lectures, check out of rooms and farewell luncheon

Breakfast: A full buffet Breakfast will be served from 7:45- 8:30 am and will feature baked oatmeal, a specialty of the house.

Morning: Mr Athnos first lecture will be feature "Rachnmaninoff & Stravinsky: Abandoning Bolshevik Russia" Then, we will check out of our rooms to give our housekeeping staff time to prepare for the next group. The morning will conclude with Greg's final lecture on "Poland, June, 1989: Beginning of the End of the Soviet Union - I was there!"

Lunch: Our farewell luncheon will be served at 12:15 pm and will feature once again our full buffet style menu and box lunches for those who need to leave early. We hope you have enjoyed this immersion into the music and art of these composers and artists who have had a great impact on our western culture
