Field Trip to Northern Door County for Lighthouses, Galleries and a Fish Boil

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: FIELD TRIP to northern Door County. Board our trolley in front of the hotel. We'll stop at EDGEWOOD ORCHARD GALLERY in Fish Creek to meet the owners JR and Nell for a guided visit of their gallery. You'll find a variety of art from paintings to sculpture to photography. You might even find a special souvenir to take home. Many of the artists represented work in Door County. Next we'll stop at the HARDY GALLERY in Ephraim. The Francis Hardy Gallery is home to some of the most creative and popular gallery exhibitions in Door County, and once you visit, it is easy to see why established and emerging artists alike love to show their work in a simple wooden warehouse. You'll know the gallery when you see it, it is covered in graffiti.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant at Gills Rock.

Afternoon: LIGHTHOUSE CRUISE. Join Captain Charlie Voight on board the Island Clipper for a one-hour cruise that will take us past two historic lighthouses. The 1885 Pilot Island Lighthouse is said to have witnessed the most shipwrecks of any light on the Great Lakes. The 1896 lifesaving station and range lights on Plum Island mark the safe passage in the treacherous waters between the tip of the Door peninsula and Washington Island called "Death's Door." Bring your cameras.

Dinner: A trip to Door County wouldn't be complete without a TRADITIONAL DOOR COUNTY FISH BOIL and we've got a great one for you. We'll travel from Gills Rock to Rowleys Bay and the Rowleys Bay Resort with their fish boil buffet. Join the storyteller by the cooking pot to learn more about Door County history and the history of the fish boil. Have your camera ready for the spectacular boil over. When the fish is done, we eat. Enjoy Lake Michigan whitefish, potatoes, onions, cole slaw and cherry dessert. If you're not a fan of fish you'll still find something tasty from the buffet with homemade dinner rolls, salad bar, soup bar and several hot entrees.

Evening: Free evening to enjoy an activity of your choice.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Board our bus for a FIELD TRIP to southern Door County. We'll start with a walk about the grounds of the 1899 Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse and the 1882 North Pierhead Light. The station at the mouth of the Lake Michigan Ship Canal is an active U.S. Coast Guard Station. We'll then travel to Peninsula State Park and the 1868 Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Restored to its 19th century appearance, this lighthouse provides a glimpse into the lives of the keepers and their families. Enjoy a docent-led visit to this lighthouse.

Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Continue our field trip by crossing the peninsula to the Lake Michigan side for a guided visit of the 1869 Cana Island Lighthouse. This 89-foot tall tower stands on the east side of the island marking the rocky and shallow shoreline. You are welcome to climb the circular staircase to the top of the tower. Then continue to the 1869 Baileys Harbor Range Lights. These range lights are sheltered from the elements and are made from wood rather than brick. Also, see the 1851 Old Baileys Harbor Lighthouse.
