Description: Enjoy the spectacular beauty of Northwest Michigan at Kettunen Center, a modern adult conference center facility located on peaceful Center Lake near Tustin, 12 miles south of Cadillac. Sounded by 160 acres of rolling hills and forests, it includes an arboretum and miles of hiking trails with a variety of outdoor seasonal activites available to guests. The Center's natural beauty and serenity, and professional staff, ensure an enjoyable stay. Classes taught by local experts.

Arrival 3:00-4:00 pm, Welcome/Tour/ at 4:30 pm/Get Acquainted activities and introduction to GPS Hike/Snack

Note: Dress to take a short hike on Kettunen Center's GPS course to learn how to use a handheld GPS. GPS units will be used to locate wildflower patches and morel "hotspots".

Afternoon: Registration 3:00-4:00 pm, check in at the front desk. Take a hike and stretch your legs! Welcome and tour at 5:00 p.m.

Dinner: Hot buffet dinner from 5:30 - 6:30 pm

Evening: Get-acquainted activities. Program on handheld Global Positioning System units on Kettunen Center's course to lead up to using the units for morel mushroom hunting and finding spring wildflower patches.

Day Two: Monday, May 06 - Breakfast/Michigan Wildflowers/Elusive Morel Mush...
Breakfast/Michigan Wildflowers/Elusive Morel Mushrooms classroom presentation/Lunch/on-site hike and field trip for morel mushroom hunting/Free time to kayak, canoe, hike or relax/Dinner/Birding Skills, equipment and websites for birding resources.

Note: Dress to be outside most of the day/hiking shoes for walking 2-4 miles on uneven, forested terrain.

Breakfast: Buffet-style breakfast served at 7:30 - 8:15 a.m.

Morning: Learn about Michigan's abundant spring wildflowers through a classroom presentation by Kettunen Center staff Program Director, then move outside to field identify species. Learn how to identify morels, where to find them, the ecology, habitats, etc. in a classroom setting, then hiking to hunt for the ellusive mushroom with the president of the Michigan Mushroom Hunters Club, Dr. Phil Tedesch. Learn about other edible spring mushrooms. New recipes to prepare these spring delicacies.

Lunch: Buffet-style lunch served at 12:00 p.m. Morel mushrooms (if we are lucky!), wild leeks and fiddle heads for lunch. Our local expert has special recipes he will share with you and our facility chefs to give you a culinary treat.

Afternoon: After lunch we will load into 7 - 12 passenger vans to state and federal land to continue hunting for the elusive morel mushrooms using our GPS hand held units. We will return at 4:00 pm and the rest of the afternoon will be free time for use of the kayaks/canoes on Center Lake, reading, internet use and other recreational opportunities at Kettunen Center.

Dinner: Buffet-style dinner served at 5:30 p.m.

Evening: Birding skills session in the computer lab offered by local National Audubon Society member and Kettunen Center Staffer. Talk will include equipment tips, identification software and website, field guides and other birding resources. An evening bird hike on Kettunen Center property will follow.

Day Three: Tuesday, May 07 - Early bird hike/Breakfast/Mushroom Cultivation/Mu...
Early bird hike/Breakfast/Mushroom Cultivation/Mushrooming Field Trip/Lunch/Canoeing and Kayaking Instruction/Preparing, Drying and storing techniques for Morels/Storytelling and Talent Night/Night Sky presentation and night hike.

Note: Dress to be outside all day with comfortable hiking shoes.

Breakfast: Buffet-style breakfast served at 7:30 -8:30 a.m.

Morning: 7:00 a.m. bird watching - optional. The best time to see and hear birds is early morning. Come join our local birding experts as we enjoy the migrating birds back home. Dress warm, bring your binoculars and field guides as we hike through forests, fields, near wetlands and nesting sites to add to our life lists.

Morning: Local morel mushroom cultivator will give a presentation on his efforts to induce morels. Local mushroom enthusiasts will lead hunts on state land near the Kettunen Center. Participants will travel by 7 and 12 passenger vans to hotspots. We hike off the trails on hilly, forested land with uneven terrain to find the elusive morels.

Lunch: Hot buffet lunch in the dining hall.

Afternoon: Canoeing and kayaking instruction led by our Certified American Red Cross lifeguard on Center Lake. Participants will be divided up into two groups which rotate throughout the two sessions. Canoe and kayak instruction: on land overview of the sport, equipment, safety and techniques. In water exercise on paddling techniques and self-rescue. All levels will be taught individually with one-on-one attention to participants technique needs and safety concerns.

Dinner: Buffet-style dinner served at 5:30 -6:30 p.m.

Evening: Program on Michigan's "Uncommon" Loons and then an opportunity to share your storytelling skills and talents with your Road Scholar group around the campfire or beside the fireplace in our main lobby. Local naturalist will lead a night hike as a guide to the night sky and the wildlife active after dark.

Early Bird Hike/Michigan Wild Turkey Program/Michigan Forests Hike/Wrap up activity/Lunch/Depart.

Depart From: Room check out is 10:00 am, but the program concludes with lunch.

Breakfast: 7:30 -8:15 am Buffet-style breakfast served in the dining hall.

Morning: 7:00 am early bird hike optional. A presentation by the President of the Pere Marquette Chapter of the Wild Turkey Hunters' Association on Michigan Wild Turkeys. Hike through Kettunen Center's diverse forests with Kettunen Center Staff forester and learn about Michigan's incredible renewable resource. Wrap up activity before lunch.

Morning: 7:00 am Early-bird hike. Optional

Lunch: Buffet-style lunch served at 12:00 pm
