Registration, reception, welcome, video on glassmaking techniques to prepare for tomorrow's hands-on glass workshop

Arrive To: Check into hotel room, then stop at meeting room (posted on sign in lobby) any time between 4:00-5:00 pm to pick up program materials and name tag.

Afternoon: Hosted reception at 5:00 pm; welcome and discussion of agenda 5:30-6:00 pm.

Dinner: Dinner in our meeting room at 6:00 pm.

Evening: After introductions all around, view a video detailing glassmaking terms and techniques that will help prepare you for working in the hot shop tomorrow morning.

Day Two: Monday, October 14 - See up-close a demonstration of glassblowing; wor...
See up-close a demonstration of glassblowing; working with an artist, create your own hand-made globe or bowl. Work in the warm shop, flameworking a small piece.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant. Enjoy fresh fruit, juices, pancakes, yogurt, hot & cold cereals, eggs, breakfast meats, breakfast breads, potatoes, coffe/decaf/tea.

Morning: Travel to a nearby art school; gather in the hot shop around the furnace and glory holes to see demonstrations of glassmaking. Ask all the questions you want about the process. Then, under one-on-one guidance of an artist, blow your own glass float or bowl and work in the flameworking or fused glass studio. Please wear natural fabrics and closed-toe shoes today; no fuzzy sweaters. Coffee service all day; mid-morning snack.

Lunch: Cracked Dungeness crab, chowder, salad and hot sourdough bread for lunch today! Watch ferries and fireboats pass by our restaurant at the end of an Elliott Bay dock. Other entrees available if crab isn't your favorite.

Afternoon: At the 104-year-old Pike Place Market, chat with artisans and farmers and dodge flying fish. Stroll the stalls, explore the many nooks and crannies and snack on delightful delicacies. After a short guided walk behing the scenes, spend free time as you choose and return the three easy blocks to our hotel when you're ready.

Dinner: Dinner in our meeting room.

Evening: Hear about the history and legacy of Pilchuck Glass School and its impact on art and artists in the Northwest and worldwide.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant.

Morning: Visit a nationally-known glass artists' supply house and its affiliated hot shop. Talk with a well-known glassmaker and his/her team--artists vary.

Lunch: Lunch in a popular Thai restaurant. The food is tasty but not spicy and menu choices are made for you.

Afternoon: Visit the Seatte Art Museum in its lovely, light-filled building. Enjoy a docent-led tour and then have time on your own.

Dinner: Dinner in hotel meeting room.

Evening: View videos of Dale Chihuly's latest installations and his work with other glass artists.

Learn about the history of glass art in the NW, then walk through public exhibits and private galleries to see shimmering delights.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant.

Morning: Hear a lecture on the history of studio glass in the Northwest, followed by a walk to see public exhibits and gallery displays.

Lunch: Lunch in your choice of Pike Place Market cafes and restaurants or other nearby eateries. There are over 60 places to choose from in the Market.

Afternoon: Just a block from the Market, visit the Seattle Art Museum's beautiful building and engaging exhibits. Afterwards, enjoy a free afternoon.

Dinner: On your own for dinner this evening. Suggestions will be provided for dinner choices and evening entertainment possibilities.

Day Five: Thursday, October 17 - Tacoma's Union Station, Tacoma Art Museum and Mus...
Tacoma's Union Station, Tacoma Art Museum and Museum of Glass. Pilchuck Glass School Auction preview.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant.

Morning: Travel to Tacoma to visit historic Union Station and the new Tacoma Art Museum to see early Chihuly pieces and TAM's current exhibits. Curators/docents will lead tours of exhibits. You must show government-issued picture identification (drivers' license/passport) to gain admittance to Union Station.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch in a casual, tasty brewpub.

Afternoon: Cross the enchanting Chihuly Bridge of Glass to the stunning Museum of Glass to view its exhibits and hot shop. A docent will lead a tour of the current show; free time to watch artists in the comfortable, amphitheatre-style hot shop and to visit nearby galleries and the Museum's tempting gift shop. Next door are the Traver Gallery and Vetri, two excellent glass galleries. Collect the work you created on Monday morning and wrap it to carry or ship home. Next we will go to the Pilchuck Glass School Auction preview at the Westin Hotel to see works by many artists who have studied at Pilchuck before this art disappears forever into private collections. Chat with artists and enjoy a glass of wine!

Dinner: After the auction preview, dinner tonight will be a relaxing meal in a popular local restaurant.

Evening: We will be at the restaurant too late to have an evening activity.

Day Six: Friday, October 18 - Short film on the construction of the Space Needl...
Short film on the construction of the Space Needle; go up to the top of the Space Needle and to the stunning new Chihuly Garden & Glass exhibit next door..

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant.

Morning: After seeing a short film about the construction of the Space Needle we'll ride the monorail to the Seattle Center to zip to the top of the 1962 landmark. Take in the 360 degree view of the area surrounding Seattle. From its 605' elevation see mountains, lakes, Puget Sound and everything in-between. Then walk next door to the stunning new Chihuly Garden & Glass exhibit to see the largest body of work in one place by the legendary glass-master. Unless you have made other plans, depart from the hotel upon your return from the Space Needle. Bon voyage!

Chihuly Gardens & GlassA permanent display of glass-master Dale Chihuly's new work in an exuberant building adjacent to the Space Needle will open in late Spring 2012. Exact date and ticket prices yet to be announced.
LeMay Car MuseumA dramatic new building adjacent to the Tacoma Dome will house part of the world's largest private car collection. On the day we travel to Tacoma you may choose to visit here instead of the Museum of Glass. Free 10-minute light-rail ride to the car museum and back to rejoin group for return to Seattle. Ticket prices not yet announced.
