Day One: Sunday, November 03 - Check-in/Orientation
Afternoon: Check-in begins at 4:00 PM.

Dinner: Conclude the day's travel with a warm welcome to the Straus Center and a delicious selection of wholesome entrees. Dinners may include salmon steaks, tofu milano or other tasteful choices. Side dishes may consist of garlic mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, tortellini or sauteed fresh vegetables. Enjoy coffee, homemade desserts and conversation around one of three stone fireplaces, or on our streamside deck overlooking the Neversink River.

Evening: Introductions and an orientation to the Straus Center and Road Scholar program. We will also review the week's hiking plan and learn more about what makes the Catskill mountains such a special place and 'forever wild'.

Giant’s Ledge. Hiking distance 5.5 miles, top elevation 2300 ft. Rocky Terrain, steep in some places, option for hike up to Panther, top elevation 3720

Breakfast: Breakfast is served in the cozy Straus Center dining room amid hardwood floors and a large stone fireplace. Typical morning meals consist of assorted fresh fruit, local farm raised eggs, oatmeal and cold cereals. Daily specials may include blueberry pancakes, and oven omelets. At the conclusion of our breakfast we will prepare a delicious trail lunch (bag lunch) prior to setting off for the day's hike.

Morning: Day long hike in the gorgeous Catskill Mountains. Our central location allows us easy and convenient access to some of the most spectacular vistas, enchanting deep woods, and tranquil streams and cascades in the Northeast United States. We will hike trails of varying terrain and scenery, allowing our guests an unsurpassed hiking 'sampler' of these majestic mountains and forests.

Lunch: Guests will be provided with a diverse variety of food selections to assemble their own picnic lunch. Sandwich items may include deli meats, tuna, chicken salad and a choice of assorted cheeses. Fresh breads, fruits, granola and cookies are also provided. Enjoy your lunch al fresco, among newfound friends and the natural beauty of the Catskills.

Afternoon: Our day long scenic/interpretive hike continues. We will be making periodic stops en route to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding us and learn a little more about this special place. We will return to the Straus Center around 4pm for relaxation and unwinding before our healthy and robust dinner.

Dinner: Conclude the day with a delicious selection of wholesome entrees. Dinners may include salmon steaks, tofu milano or other tasteful choices. Side dishes may consist of garlic mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, tortellini or sauteed fresh vegetables. Enjoy coffee, homemade desserts, and pleasant conversation around one of our three stone fireplaces or on our peaceful deck overlooking the Neversink River.

Evening: On-site evening presentations in our cozy living room often include an array of topics ranging from local history or environmental education, to instructional videos and local performances.

Balsam Lake Mountain. Hiking distance 6.5 Miles, top elevation 3600. Rocky terrain, steep in some places. The summit is one of the 5 Catskill mountains that has a fire tower.

Ashokan High Point. Hiking distance 7.6 Miles, top elevation 3080. Rocky terrain, steady uphill for first 3 miles. Changes to steep, climbing in some sections for last 1.6 miles.

Slide Mountain. Hiking distance of 9.5 miles, top elevation 4180, Steady uphill, two areas for scramble. Slide is the tallest mountain in the Catskills and affords amazing views on a clear day.

Day Six: Friday, November 08 - Red Hill Fire tower. Hiking distance of 3 miles, ...
Red Hill Fire tower. Hiking distance of 3 miles, top elevation 2990. Steady uphill for first ¾ of a mile, then varying pitches including sharp uphill for last ¾ of a mile.

Breakfast: Breakfast is served in the cozy Straus Center dining room amid hardwood floors and a large stone fireplace. Typical morning meals consist of assorted fresh fruit, local farm raised eggs, oatmeal and cold cereals. Daily specials may include blueberry pancakes, waffles and omelets made to order.

Morning: Shorter, but invigorating hike to nearby Red Hill Fire Tower. This southernmost of Catskill lookout towers offers spectacular 360 degree vistas of the tallest Catskill peaks. Often our Red Hill hike will be shared with a New York State forest ranger, who will offer great insight into the local ecology and history.

Lunch: Return to the Straus Center for final lunch together around noon. We provide a bagged lunch to allow ultimate flexibilty for our guests as they plan their trip home. Lunch will be followed by "goodbyes" and check-out for departure by 2PM.
