Cumberland Falls State Resort is located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Known as the "Niagara of the South," the waterfall forms a 125-foot wide curtain that plunges 60 feet into the boulder-strewn gorge below. The mist of Cumberland Falls creates the magic of the moonbow, only visible on a clear night during a full moon. This unique phenomenon appears nowhere else in the Western Hemisphere.

Explore Appalachian geography with historical emphasis through classroom instruction/discussion.

Jam Session: Enjoy performances by local musicians, feel free to join in the fun.

Gain an understanding of the role religion plays in the lives of the people of Appalachia. Presented with respect to the musical traditions of both mainstream and unique mountain denominations.

Evening:
Music of Appalachia with respect to history and local traditions. Understand the history of several musical instruments and how the people of the mountains used them and made them their own.

During a field trip to local coal camps, learn about the communities that revolved around the industry of coal mining, and consider coal's economic importance in the Appalachian region.
Lunch:
Enjoy a box lunch while visiting former Company owned coal camps.
Afternoon:
Visit areas of natural interest, such as Natural Arch Scenic Area and Devil's Jump, that help to highlight the unique geography and geology of the Cumberland Plateau region of Appalachia.
Dinner:
Dinner in the dining room.
Evening:
Learn about the nighttime birds of prey and have a chance at an up close encounter with a wild bird of prey.

- Nature Walk/Socio economics of region/Farewell Party

Turning Obstacles into Opportunities. Socio-economic look at Appalachia with emphasis on minority populations.
Lunch:
Lunch in the dining room.
Afternoon:
Guided 1.5 mile nature hike focusing on the flora and fauna of the park, with emphasis on the many wildflowers that grace the area. Return to the lodge for a discussion of both historical and new approaches to reclamation of surface mines and the pros and cons of each.
Dinner:
Dinner followed by Kentucky Chatauqua performance bringing to life a fascinating figure from Appalachian Kentucky's past.
Evening:
Enjoy an overview of the week, saying farewell to new found friends over dessert. Make sure to bring your Road Scholar passport.

Day Six: Friday, May 03
- Program Wrap Up/Departure
Breakfast:
Breakfast in the dining room.
Morning:
Guided 1.5 mile nature hike focusing on the flora and fauna of the park, with emphasis on the many wildflowers that grace the area en route to the Pinnacle Knob Firetower to discover a magnificent view of the Cumberland Plateau.
Lunch:
Lunch in the dining room.
Afternoon:
Departure after lunch.
