Day One: Sunday, February 17 - Registration/Orientation
Afternoon: Registration begins at 4:00 p.m. in Coastal Retreat Center lobby. Coffee, tea, water, fruit, snacks provided upon arrival.

Dinner: Supper is served at 6 p.m. Prime Rib starts your week of fine dining. Catered meals receive rave reviews, especially the seafood fare. Dietary restrictions accomodated.

Evening: Road Scholar coordinator and resident manager offer you a warm Southern welcome, along with orientation to the retreat center and program. Enjoy fellowship with other participants.

Day Two: Monday, February 18 - Morning Presentations of Siege of Charleston and ...
Morning Presentations of Siege of Charleston and Music/Bus Adventure of Charleston/Gullah Introduction

Breakfast: Copies of local paper and USA Today available each morning. Breakfast is served at 7:45am.

Morning: Two morning classes beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Gain new insights from a Civil War historian and re-enactor wearing a different period uniform each day. During the second presentation a husband and wife duo educate and perform with a variety of instruments from Renaissance to Celtic to contemporary American folk music.

Lunch: A variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and cookies are served. Menu varies daily.

Afternoon: Receive a comprehensive overview of historic Charleston by a licensed guide. Learn about The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and the Charleston Visitors Center, with rest stops at each of these sites. Group will also tour historic St. Michael's Episcopal Church at the famous "Four Corners of Law" in downtown Charleston. This excursion will whet your appetite for sights to see during free periods.

Dinner: Dinner is served at the retreat center. Enjoy your choice of seafood or non-seafood entree! Our chef knows how to please!

Evening: The enslaved West Africans and their descendants, the Gullah people, inhabit the Sea Islands and the Lowcountry of SC and Georgia. Learn about the origins of the Gullah people and their unique language.

Day Three: Tuesday, February 19 - Siege and Music/Free Afternoon/Dining out at Sull...
Siege and Music/Free Afternoon/Dining out at Sullivan's/Gullah Experience

Breakfast: "Early Bird" coffee is available after 6:15 AM. 7:45 a.m. Breakfast

Morning: You will find our Civil War historian passionate and knowledgeable. During second presentation, musicians educate about early Celtic and American music.

Lunch: Our light lunches include cookies for your dessert. Fresh fruit always available.

Afternoon: After lunch, you are free to explore the Charleston area from 1-6 p.m. Take advantage of the many cultural offerings of Charleston, nearby plantations, or the beach across the street from the Retreat Center. The internet site "www.charlestoncvb.com" will preview many unique places to visit and things to do during your free time. At the visitors bureau on Monday afternoon you will find many brochures and booklets with a huge amount of helpful tourist information. Wireless internet connection is available in our dining and downstairs lounge areas.

Dinner: Tonight we dine at a nearby resturant, Sullivan's, known for their exceptional seafood!

Evening: After dinner we usually show the film "God's Gonna Trouble the Water", a documentary by SC Educational Television that tells the story of the Gullah people.

Day Four: Wednesday, February 20 - Siege and Music/CSS Hunley Visitation/Sweetgrass ...
Breakfast: 7:45 a.m. Breakfast

Morning: Your Civil War presenter will bring a special presentation about the Confederate submarine the CSS Hunley, which was the first successful submarine attack in history! Musicians continue to engage their audiences in delightful ways.

Lunch: Enjoy "deli" type sandwiches, fresh fruit, salads.

Afternoon: The Confederate Submarine the CSS Hunley was raised August 8, 2000. It is currently being conserved at a Lab in North Charleston. We will be visiting the submarine and all the stories and artifacts that were found inside. Truly an amazing experience!

Dinner: Supper is at 6:00 p.m.

Evening: After dinner you'll enjoy a narrated sweetgrass basket demonstration. Sweetgrass baskets are a major part of the history of the lowcountry. This craft came to the SC Lowcountry from the enslaved West Africans who used the baskets as tools for working in the rice fields. Today the baskets are elaborate works of art that have been deemed the SC "state craft". See a demonstration and narrative about these baskets. Baskets will be available for purchase.

Day Five: Thursday, February 21 - Siege and Music/Fort Moultrie/"Graduation Celebra...
Siege and Music/Fort Moultrie/"Graduation Celebration" and Ice Cream Social

Breakfast: 7:45 a.m. Breakfast

Morning: Civil War re-enactor continues his intriguing story of the war's impact in South Carolina. Musicians are able to delight participants even if they aren't especially music lovers.

Lunch: Enjoy a light lunch. Cookies always available.

Afternoon: Explore Fort Moultrie and the Charles Pinckney Historic Site! This Fort on Sullivan's Island was a major part of the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and was in operation through World War II. Now a part of the National Historic Parks, Fort Moultrie has lots history and much to learn about. A visit to the Charles Pinckney Historic Site reveals insight into the life of one of our founding fathers who was instrumental in the drafting of the Constitution.

Dinner: Enjoy another fine meal at the Coastal Retreat Center!

Evening: All of your hard work has paid off, and we will celebrate your week of lifelong learning with a "Graduation Celebration!" After graduation you will enjoy special entertainment. Then, to top off a special evening, make your own ice cream sundae at our ice cream bar as we gather for fun and fellowship.

Day Six: Friday, February 22 - Final classroom sessions/Lunch/Departure
Breakfast: Breakfast is at 7:45 a.m.

Morning: Final morning presentations on Civil War and Music are for one hour, beginning at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Check out of rooms between 9:30 and 10:30 AM. Turn in keys, evaluations. All participants must be out of rooms by 10:00 AM. For those using public transportation, a secure area is provided for baggage.

Lunch: Lunch will be served at 11:30 AM. However, you may request a "To Go" box and take lunch with you. "To Go" boxes not available until 11:30 AM. Good luck and safe travels to all!
