Day Two: Monday, October 07 - Glass-blowing and glass-casting at Pratt Fine Art...
Glass-blowing and glass-casting at Pratt Fine Arts Center; all day spent in the studio.

Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast in Frolik, the hotel's new restaurant.

Morning: We'll board the Metro bus to ride about 12 minutes to Pratt Fine Arts Center for our first day in the studio. See a glass-blowing demo incorporating a number of different techniques. Gather molten glass on your blowpipe and work with the artists/teachers to create your own globe or paperweight. Wear natural fabrics and closed-toe shoes--no sandals or fuzzy sweaters today, please. Layers are good since the hot shop can be hot, cool and/or breezy from overhead fans.

Lunch: We'll eat our catered lunch at Pratt in an area away from chemicals and glass shards. Good idea!

Afternoon: This afternoon we'll experience hot casting, where molten glass is poured into sand molds you have prepared. You are welcome to bring small objects to embed in the molten glass; no plastics, copper or other metals are best. Confer with the instructor on site about expected results.

Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel this evening.

Evening: See a video of legendary glass-master Dale Chihuly working with Italian master glass-makers.

Day Three: Tuesday, October 08 - Glass fusing and lampworking at Pratt Fine Arts C...
Glass fusing and lampworking at Pratt Fine Arts Center; all day spent in the studio.

Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel this morning.

Morning: Ride the Metro to Pratt for our morning classes in glass fusing and lampworking. Fusing involves choosing flat glass pieces of various colors, using tools to cut them into the shapes you desire and arranging them to form designs. These are then heated in a kiln until the glass melts enough to fuse together. Lampworking, also called flameworking, requires a very hot butane table-mounted torch. Wearing protective glasses, you heat Pyrex rods in the flame and manipulate the softened glass with tools to form beads and other small shapes. The class will divide into two smaller groups so everyone will have individual attention.

Lunch: Catered lunch at Pratt.

Afternoon: After lunch, return to the warm shop for fusing and lampworking. Switch to the other class this afternoon from this morning and begin learning a new skill. It's useful to spend half a day in each area so that pieces completed in the morning can be fired in the kiln in the afternoon and cool overnight in preparation for additional work the following day. Limited space in the kilns allows for successive firings.

Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel this evening.

Evening: Tour the City Center glass collection across the street from our hotel. See work from many artists who have created pieces at Pilchuck Glass School.
