Registration, Program Orientation, Geography overview and Meet Your Fellow Participants

Afternoon: On-site registration (drop in) between 4:30-5:15 PM in hotel meeting room.

Dinner: Dinner to include: small house salad or cup of soup and an entree (varies on each night). Examples of entrees include chicken marsala; meat or vegetable lasagna ; beef or chicken fajitas; basil and orange crusted salmon with parpadelle pasta and vegetable ratatouille; or chicken picatta with asparagus and confetti rice. A vegetarian option will be available all meals.

Evening: Introductions and orientation. Review your program itinerary and have any questions you may have answered. Get to know your fellow participants and get excited for your program! We will follow up our orientation with a geography overview of the Colorado Plateau and Lake Powell area. Get your bearings to the landscapes you will encounter

Human History of Glen Canyon Region/Boat Trip on Lake Powell to Antelope Canyon/Photography presentation.

Note: Short walk to the dock to board boat, but handicap assistance vehicle is available with advance notice.

Breakfast: Enjoy a hot breakfast buffet, including scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon, French toast or pancakes, oatmeal or Cream of Wheat, fresh fruit, toast, juice and coffee.

Morning: Presentation on the human history of the Colorado Plateau. See how anthropologists determined who were the first people in the area, where they came from and how they survived. The presentation will cover settlement in the area up to the arrival of the early European explorers and settlers.

Lunch: Lunch to include juice, soft drink, coffee and a cookie or brownie as well as one of the following (varies on any particular day): roast beef and muenster cheese sandwich; grilled veggie sandwich; grilled chicken sandwich; margarita-marinated chicken Caesar salad; fettuccine pasta and rock shrimp ; or sautéed breast of chicken

Afternoon: After lunch we will head to Wahweap Marina to board a boat to explore the lake.We start out by navigating the original path of the mighty Colorado River and explore the mouth of famed Antelope Canyon located on the Navajo Nation. This high-walled Navajo Sandstone side-arm of Lake Powell is famous not only for its coloration, but also for the slot canyons found at its head to the east. All Tour Boats provide complimentary water, lemonade and coffee and have restrooms. Boats have both interior seating as well as up-top outdoor seating for full viewing and photographic opportunities. These boats do offer railings on the upper decks. You are free to walk around the boat as you like.

Evening: Enjoy a presentation from Frank Talbott, a professional photographer for over 30 years. Frank will reveal the beauty and majesty of this area, share a few stories about his "favorite" discoveries and demonstate how best to use your digital camera to capture the stunning beauty that surrounds you.

Glen Canyon Dam and Carl Hayden Visitor Center -- Colorado River Float Trip to Lee's Ferry/Petroglyphs/Guitar and Song Entertainment

Note: Raft trip on the Colorado River. No whitewater, just motoring and floating down the last 15-mile stretch of beautiful Glen Canyon. Getting on/off rafts requires some strength and agility, assistance available. During the trip there is a short walk along the beach side up to a ancient Anasazi petroglyph panel.

Breakfast: Enjoy a hot breakfast buffet, including scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon, French toast or pancakes, oatmeal or Cream of Wheat, fresh fruit, toast, juice and coffee.

Morning: After breakfast, travel to the Glen Canyon Dam Visitor Center. See a large scale relief map of the Lake Powell and Four Corners region. The center houses displays of the dam's construction. With its millions of cubic yards of concrete and tons of rebar, the dam was constructed during the late 1950's and early 1960's in the steep sandstone-walled narrows of the Colorado River. It is the last major dam built on the Colorado River drainage system. Enjoy an opportunity to see the dam's inner workings with a guided tour. ////////////////// Late morning the group will travel to the Colorado River Discovery headquarters for orientation. Then descend through a two-mile long tunnel through the Navajo sandstone to the base of Glen Canyon Dam and the put-in point for the Colorado River raft trip.

Lunch: Enjoy a box lunch on the rafts while floating downstream.

Afternoon: Your motorized river raft will launch at the bottom of the dam and float downstream through the deep red 1000' Navajo sandstone walls of Glen Canyon, the only remaining section left unflooded by the waters of Lake Powell. Stop to see ancient petroglyphs on the canyon walls. Hear the story of rainbow trout in the river, the effects of the dam on the riparian (streamside) ecology, hear stories of river runners and perhaps see a hawk or maybe a condor soaring in the clear blue sky above.Continue your float down this calm stretch of the Colorado River. Float towards Marble Canyon, which marks the official beginning of the Grand Canyon. End the float at Lee's Ferry, a well-known ferry crossing before construction of the Navajo Bridge. This marks the launch site of all Grand Canyon river trips so, depending on the time of year, you may see rafters rigging their trips in anticipation of 8-20 days on the river. Board the coach and travel out of the Lee's Ferry area noticing the stark landscape and balanced rocks. Cross the Navajo Bridge and travel to Page through 'The Cut' as your excursion comes full circle.

Evening: After dinner at the hotel, Joanna Joseph will provide beautiful musical entertainment. This program will be a great conclusion to a wonderful day!

Morning: Hear about the "Floating Hogans", a presentation by an Anglo couple who lived among the Navajo while operating a houseboating concession on the San Juan Arm of Lake Powell during the 1980's. Listen to stories of the remote part of the Navajo reservation where they operated their business and the interactions they had with their Navajo employees and friends. ///////// Program farewells by 10:30 a.m. Hotel checkout by 11:00 AM.
