Day One: Saturday, November 02 - Registration/Introductions & Orientation
Afternoon: Brief registration with Program coordinator between 4:30-5:15 PM.

Dinner: Dinner at Golden Goose Restaurant, adjacent to the hotel. Participants will have multiple entrees to choose from with typical rotating selections to include Chicken Marsala, fish, prime rib, meat loaf, pastas, vegetarian options, etc.

Evening: After dinner your Northern Arizona University Coordinator will lead an orientation session followed by participant introductions. NOTE: This start date is Activity Level "Challenging".

Day Two: Sunday, November 03 - All Day Hike in Bear Wallow Canyon
Note: Five to eight and a half mile hike with 1300 feet elevation

Breakfast: Breakfast at the Golden Goose Restaurant. Multiple hot entrees to choose from including bacon and eggs, french toast and sausage, fruit bowl and yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Morning: After breakfast, the van takes the group to the Bear Wallow Canyon Area for an all-day exploration through varied terrain, ascending through a narrow gorge and arriving at massive formations known locally as the "cow pies," providing panoramic views in all directions. Hike is approximately 5.5-8.5 miles in length with a cumulative elevation gain of up to 1,300 feet. NOTE: Days destination is dependent on current weather/road conditions and may change to other day of the week or alternative destination. Each day of the program, the group will travel to a trail site in the red rocks around Sedona. These outings include hikes through canyons with steep rock walls, juniper and pine woods, upper desert cacti, and tremendous views of the red rocks surrounding Sedona and the Secret Mountain Wilderness.

Lunch: Sack lunch at a location of participants' choice (motel or on trail).

Afternoon: After lunch, the hike continues.

Dinner: Dinner at Golden Goose Restaurant, adjacent to the hotel. Participants will have multiple entrees to choose from with typical rotating selections to include Chicken Marsala, fish, prime rib, meat loaf, pastas, vegetarian options, etc.

Evening: A presentation on Hollywood movies filmed in the local area.

Day Three: Monday, November 04 - Soldiers Pass/Brins Mesa Area
Note: Five mile hike with an option to extend it to 7.5 miles

Breakfast: Breakfast at the Golden Goose Restaurant. Multiple hot entrees to choose from including bacon and eggs, french toast and sausage, fruit bowl and yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Morning: Following breakfast, the group shuttles to the Soldier Pass Trailhead for an all-day, hike on the Soldier's Pass and Brins Mesa Trails. We will start with a 5 mile hike, with an optional trip to Ancestral Puebloan Ruins for a total hike of 7.5 miles. There are many dramatic destinations and scenic vista points which this route offers, including the Devil's Kitchen sink hole, the Seven Sacred Pools, and a visit to a remote archaeological site. NOTE: Days destination is dependent on current weather/road conditions and may change to other day of the week or alternative destination.

Lunch: Again, a sack lunch will be carried by each participant for al fresco dining.

Afternoon: After lunch, the hike continues.

Dinner: Dinner at the Thai Spices Restaurant. Known for its "Healthy Asian Cuisine" cuisine, the Thai Spices serves up delicious, perfectly flavored rice, noodle and mixed veggie and meat dishes in a friendly atmosphere.

Evening: In the evening, enjoy a talk on Geology or another topic of local interest.

Day Four: Tuesday, November 05 - Mescal Mountain or the Cockcomb half day hike
Note: Three to five mile hike with 800 feet of elevation

Breakfast: Breakfast at the Golden Goose Restaurant. Multiple hot entrees to choose from including bacon and eggs, french toast and sausage, fruit bowl and yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Morning: Today's half day hike will be either Mescal Mountain or the Cockscomb with its 3 miles and 600 feet. Mescal Mountain will take us up a small mesa from the head of Long Canyon. Indian ruins are scattered in this area including an old Pit House which we will explore. After a short approach to the foot of the Mesa, we have to climb steeply to a ridge, follow it to a saddle, then climb some more. Total mileage is approximately 5 miles and the cumulative elevation change is about 800 feet. We will return to hotel by 1:00 pm for participants to enjoy a free afternoon of discovery. NOTE: Days destination is dependent on current weather/road conditions and may change to other day of the week or alternative destination.

Lunch: Sack lunch during the field trip

Afternoon: After lunch, a free afternoon is scheduled.

Dinner: Dinner is left unscheduled to enjoy on your own.

Evening: After dinner, it's a free evening. Rest them weary bones.

Day Five: Wednesday, November 06 - Bear Mountain hike
Note: Five and a half mile hike with up to 1800 feet of elevation.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the Golden Goose Restaurant. Multiple hot entrees to choose from including bacon and eggs, french toast and sausage, fruit bowl and yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Morning: Following breakfast, the group shuttles to the Bear Mountain area for the week's most challenging hike. Bear Mountain Trail climbs 1800 feet in 2.7 miles (5.5 miles round trip) to provide a huge overlook of the Secret Mountain Wilderness and beyond. The hiking is uphill the entire way, sometimes steep, but worth the effort as you are rewarded with great views the entire way. View of the San Francisco Peaks to the north at the top. The trail ascends a series of five steps and participants who are weary about making the final hike to the top can rest below the summit push and still feel good about all they have accomplished. An alternate hike could be Loy Butte and Honanki Overlook at 5.5 miles and 1100 feet. NOTE: Days destination is dependent on current weather/road conditions and may change to other day of the week or alternative destination.

Lunch: Box lunch on the trail.

Afternoon: After lunch, more hiking.

Dinner: Dinner at Golden Goose Restaurant, adjacent to the hotel. Participants will have multiple entrees to choose from with typical rotating selections to include Chicken Marsala, fish, prime rib, meat loaf, pastas, vegetarian options, etc.

Evening: After dinner, a presentation on Sedona / Verde Valley.

Lodging: Sedona Super 8 Hotel

Day Six: Thursday, November 07 - Hike Schuerman Mountain OR Boynton Vista
Note: Two mile hike

Breakfast: Breakfast at the Golden Goose Restaurant. Multiple hot entrees to choose from including bacon and eggs, french toast and sausage, fruit bowl and yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Morning: Our final hike of the week will take us to the Scheurman Mountain Trail or Boynton Vista. Scheurman Mountain is not a difficult hike, but a great place to acquire beautiful views and have our program wrap-up. The trail skirts various basaltic flows before reaching the top. Total mileage of just 2 miles and 350 ft. of elevation gain. Boynton Vista climbs to a vista overlooking Boyton Canyon and is about 2 miles and 200 feet in elevation change. We will return to the hotel by 10:45AM for program conclusion, hotel check-out and independent departures. NOTE: Days destination is dependent on current weather/road conditions and may change to other day of the week or alternative destination.
